I think we need to consider the fact that this series was never meant to answer all these questions, and the situation was always a framework to explore the characters. I mean, this has basically been told to us from the start, but the point is that thinking about it in terms of mysteries being solved or some big escape, but whether or not the characters can resolve their issues. In that regard, this last episode accomplished the task of giving ALL the characters a reason to doubt they even are who they think they are.

Honestly the whole "It was an adventure all along thing" was so blatantly obvious that the only suprisingly thing was that it wasnt played as ared herring at all. I think I figured out the direction the show is going in for the finale. I don't want to say too much since I don't think anybody else realized the major setup that's done and the foreshadowing done with the sharks and some other aspects with froggy, but you should research the concept of the pleasure box.

So I think what we're going towards is that the abstractions have the potential to be caused by Caine tweaking with their brains. Jax's near-abstraction in the beginning is Caine actively trying to "fix" Jax so he can participate in the adventure.It's why abstraction seems to be a euphoric experience: it's Caine artificially injecting positive emotions into you despite your crippled mental state, and the dissonance causes your brain to split apart and yourself to abstract.

So you likely have this anxious fear constantly nipping at your ankles, with no meaningful way to get rid of it.
