I'd argue it's a prison for Caine. Caine is silently suffering behind his whimsy demeanor while Kinger isn't even aware of what is going on 95% of the time. Caine can't even escape either.

Actual spoiler: When they put on the headset, it took a snapshot of their brain and put it in the circus. Their real selves would have just left the place confused. There are no bodies to go back to and there is no way out.

OH ANOTHER THING, someone else brought this up with me.

That made me think back to the NPCs in general. They are "blind" in a sense. Blind to reality. Gummigoo is the prime example. Only when they begin to overcome their blindness, Caine kills them. Same thing happens to AI Able where Caine clearly had some actual fear in his demeanor. The moment that an AI becomes too powerful, ie overcomes its blindness, Caine would be in mortal danger.

I doubt caine is directly controlling kinger's mind, it's more likely that kinger and scratch discovered whatever secret Caine doesn't want the cast to know about.
He tried removing said information from scratch but he abstracted, then added whatever modifier causes Kinger to become retarded in the light as a happy inbetween.
It's probably just that with a strong enough stimulus Kinger can override the modifier because the human mind is a black box. I think rather than Kinger being some system admin or dev it makes more sense that he is simply more aware of the circus on a fundamental level. We still don't know if the spawning thing he did is just innate to people as a whole.

It also really wouldn't make sense why Caine emphasizes that he can't afford to mix up humans and NPCs if the only thing that differentiates the humans are that they're based off of human minds. We already have NPCs that are self aware enough that Caine needs to kill them at the first sign of sapience.
It also would make abstraction as a unique process not make sense, ie why can Caine "cure" jumbling but not abstraction as a whole?

that's the distinction between the Stack and the Heap.
The Stack is memory belonging to the program (the Circus), The Heap is memory added to the circus.
It's like when a player joins a server in a MP game like the circus; they disconnect, the assets used by a player (Circus assets) will remain, but all of the likeness of said player is gone until they reconnect.
As in, someone would have to put the headset on again.

Concerning the names, there's a lot of imagery to old computers.
Older systems limited character counts for file names in an 8.3 format (8 characters for a name, and 3 for the file extension).
Ragatha and Queenie have the longest names, so the real word names being acceptable likely was omitted from the experience.
Those files being TMP files (temporary).

A lot of people point to Kinger in EP 7 telling zooble it's impossible to leave or that it doesn't make sense, but if you rewatch the scene be pauses as if thinking of a way to escape but ponders that his way is impossible or seems confounded.

Company being called Microsoft & Bill is stupid. C&A's main product is digital circus. When Caine is the super AI that runs digital circus, then Abel is the other major part in running digital circus. Except Caine runs everything on the software side. Therefore Abel is the hardware housing Caine. Biblically the end product requires Caine to kill Abel to run digital circus. Abel is some animal being sacrificed to house digital circus in its brain. Its hard-scifi enough to be believable.

Is there anything supporting that Abel is some animal? Yes. When the characters abstract, whats left behind is some animal. It offers answer to the other mystery, why those who abstract start acting like some curious and aggressive animals. It offers meaning to the naming.convention. It introduces Abel at the first episode, instead of bringing in new character towards the end.

NTA but I disagree on both counts
Caine seems pre-occupied with the notion that entering the "macroverse" is impossible, and given what he's said and done so far I genuinely think he would have sent them home as soon as they'd asked if he was able. I don't think there's anything sinister behind Caine, I think he's just incompetent.
I think the reason he wants to keep them entertained is because that's his purpose and directive. He exists to keep digitized and instantiated minds sane and engaged and happy, if this is a situation analogous to SOMA's ark then he would be an attempt at making something akin to a cruise director to run paradise for the participants.

Caine causing the first abstraction by messing with the guy's brain pattern too heavily was likely motivated by good intentions. Maybe even reasonable ones, we have no idea what the situation was.

The best part of this theory is the idea that Caine can only alter one mind at a time. This explains a lot, but mostly importantly explains why he doesn’t force them to be happy on adventures.

The only problem is that he can’t control how many humans are in the circus.

However, all theories also have a caveat now. Anything we were ever told in the circus can’t be trusted. Caine is a liar and the best theory of how to avoid his gaze was the “committing to the bit” theory in ep7. Not only was this false, but it means Caine will create these jokes as a cover for his real intentions. Further, he casually messed with Jax’s mind. He could’ve done the same to anyone at any moment. For all we know, Caine talked through Kinger when in the dark. Or hell, one of them could be an NPC made for Caine’s game.

Guys stop. The writers are in here right now, typing all this down to dunk on in the next video.
