I don't think they even originally intended on any of the OG cast besides Katara even showing up in the present given the way she says "My brother and many of my friends are gone." I can understand that it would've gotten messy if they had to check in on everyone and their kids and their grandkids. Plus there'd always be people who would've felt jilted if they did introduce more descendants but they were all irrelevant. Like, if Sokka's son showed up but he was just some boring schmuck so that he wasn't bloating the main cast, then there'd be griping.All that said, it does feel weird when the rest of the gaang showed up throughout the show and they all had kids, but Sokka's just this blank void aside from the flashback cameo. Like, there's actually a lot going on with how they actually care about each other even more than they realize, but Azula's shadow hangs over everything and makes it difficult for Zuko to fully open up. Thus when Mai's seeing that he's troubled, she can only comfort him in shallow ways, telling him not to worry about it, which is her own coping mechanism in life. And thus she becomes symbolic of the temptation to stay with the Fire Nation rather than doing what's right, when in reality she was way more ride or die for Zuko than anyone realized. But even so, Zuko can't abide by the notion of dragging her down with him.All of that's there, but it's just underexposed because there's just not enough time. The relationship is just suddenly there and we get to briefly glimpse the moving parts from time to time and then it slams to its conclusion.
