ok /co/bros, this is a question for all of you. why we don't have cool and edgy stories like invader zim/johnny homicidal maniac anymore? and i don't mean just corposlop from mainstream studios but like indies too. why don't we have stuff that can be both edgy, witty while delivering social critique here and there?
Invader Zim was to edgy for Nick, and I'm surprised that it was even greenlit for a cable channel like them. I think it was the last edgy Nicktoon they had.
>>151718007always thought it would fit better on cartoon network but they're retarded
>>151717964It was such an amazing universe. It deserves a sequel or remake.
>>151717964Because everyone just blindly copies whatever's successful and trendy and that went from being looked down upon to being accepted to being considered the only correct way to do everything.
>>151717964>why we don't have cool and edgy stories like invader zim/johnny homicidal maniac anymore?Because it's over done and there's like five different death game anime every season that shows that
>>151719534I don't see clever dystopian world's like Zim's. A best the last one I've seen is Coffin which in my headcanon is in the same universe as Zim, except in Europe instead of USA.
They still make edgy stuff. Like this cartoon where Elon Musk and Joe Rogan are in space and Joe Rogan smokes the space weed and turns black and the cops think he's Kevin Hart.
>>151717964I don't know if we should be grateful it didn't went mainstream as hard as other media of the time, I wouldn't want Invader Zim get prostituted for 30 seasons like SpongeBob or JTHM become the template for every fucking western comic and saturate the market with cynicismEven though it wouldn't be as painful as the gay shit pushed nowadays
We have edgy stuff, we have goth stuff, why won't people put the two together again and make billions of dollars and control all of civilization?
>>151720356You almost got me to play that game
>>151721559Its worth it. I think its like a book, just a visual novel to enjoy the story with but not precisely a game.I wish we had more properly developed dystopian universes like Zim and Coffin.
>>151717964Invader Zim is pretty unique when it comes to western animation, I can't think of any kid's shows quite like it. The closest would probably be Billy & Mandy. The dystopian setting and bleak atmosphere and black comedy are part of what make it great but those things are seen as too dark for kids so it's never been replicated. Hell even the movie didn't quite replicate it, it was a bit softer and less grim compared to the show.
>>151722379Agreed, its a shame, it was truly ahead of its time
>>151717964Sequel when?
>>151717964>ok /co/bros, this is a question for all of you. why we don't have cool and edgy stories like invader zim/johnny homicidal maniac anymore? abe more specific, there's murder drones which takes a lot of influence from zim, but I don't know if that's what you mean exactly
>>151720356>A best the last one I've seen is Coffin which in my headcanon is in the same universe as ZimCongrats at making IZ lamer...
Look, i'm not asking for much, all i need it an Invader Zim special focused on The Trial. That would be an amazing closer to Invader Zim.
>>151723549this>>151723364MD has some edgy elements but still has an soft tumblr-esque vibe to it in terms of the writing and character interactions
>>151723589>soft tumblr-esque vibeWatched the series several times, very recently too, and at no moment i got Tumblr vibes, unless you mean very early Tumblr, in that case that vibe come from the edgy mid 2000 stuff Tumblr was built over back then. The same Liam V. got inspired by.
>>151723681>and at no moment i got Tumblr vibes, uzi and N's relationship gives me that a lot, especially with how soft and "twinkable" he is, while Uzi also has secret edgy powers she unlocks later. It just doesn't have that same bleak yet comedic vibe zim has
>>151723825Just be glad they're straight
>>151723825Soft twinks aren't inherently Tumblr, heck Dib was pretty much a proto version of that, believe me, i grew up on this fandom, reading fanfics older than several anons here (not a flex, this was horrible), a lot of fans interpreted Dib that way back then. Also the show isn't preachy as Tumblrbait shows are. And the show can be very bleak yet comedic, specially with CYN / the Absolute Solver.i still can't find any true Tumblr vibes, but i can understand it isn't your thing.
>>151723825>while Uzi also has secret edgy powers she unlocks later.o forgot to point out Gaz on this one.
>>151723839true>>151723910>soft twinks aren't inherently tumblr I don't believe that, shit like "precious cinnamon roles" were phrases mainly used on tumblr, so a rise of soft twink character ideas was growing over there>heck Dib was pretty much a proto version of that, what the actual fuck are you talking about, dib (pre Florpus) was a paranormal obsessed freak who finally found evidence for all his crazy theories (zim). Sometimes he was shown in a more heroic role, but he was still a crazy and obsessed with validation. Fanfics that mischaracterized characters (pic related) like zim and dib don't reflect how they were shown in the actual show. >>151723928That's just a gag for comedic effect
>>151724192a crazy weirdo*
>>151724192>Fanfics that mischaracterized characters (pic related) like zim and dib don't reflect how they were shown in the actual show.True, but those fanfics predate Tumblr, and used that archetype. Therefore, that archetype predates Tumblr.
favorite/least favorite zim episdoes? I love the halloween one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPFKN37OQKI
>>151724339I'm not saying tumblr invented those types of archetypes and fanfics, it's that tumblr served as a breeding ground to further expand and popularize them, to the point it's an inherent quality of that site
>>151724359Well that's just your perception, but i experienced those before Tumblr was even a thing. But hey, i watched IZ before 9/11, so maybe it's just i'm old.
>>151717964They’re still around. The edgy people seem to put out zine comix in their local scenes and Patreons. Or they become tattoo artists.
>>151717964Just buy the blu-ray so maybe we can get a revival that's even more childish and annoying than Florpus. At least it won't have Roiland next time.
>>151724346Same, that and Dark Harvest are awesomely creepy. Another I enjoyed because it makes me laugh is when Zim forces the mighty tallest to visit Earth.https://youtu.be/3wn37-_53Yk
>>151724742>Another I enjoyed because it makes me laugh is when Zim forces the mighty tallest to visit Earth.Literally the best episode imo.
>>151717964The 90's edginess was a response to the 80's sappyness. Now people want a show that makes them feel good without being super sappy.
>>151724742Zim is so fucking cute dammit
>>151717964Stations see them as hateful fart shows
>>151725487Yes he is! He's one of the cutest beings on earth only because every other human is disfigured. If you describe Zim to anyone who doesn't know him, they'll imagine an ugly monster, even though he's not.Such is his awesomeness!
>>151717964We aren't getting more Invader Zims and Grim Adventures because the type of people who make that stuff are not the one's in the industry right now, it's people who want their cartoons to have ongoing plots that are referenced episode by episode
>>151718412i would always confuse it for a cartoon network show as a kid, it never felt like a nicktoon
>>151717964They're called "adult animation" now.
>>151723589>>151723681Tumblr got their vibes from this show. Rebecca Sugar was an Invader Zim fag. So was Vivienne Medrano.
>>151726835>what if invader zim but gay>becomes it's only legacy
>>151726835Is there an English-speaking millennial working in animation that isn't a Zim fag?
I liked Lenore more than anything made by Vasquez.I thought it was funnier and more appealing aesthetically.
