So they lock the copies they've made in a little box, create an AI to keep them entertained, and move on to something else. The childishness, all the restrictions, maybe even the whole circus theme, all of that is just coming from Caine interpreting his instructions to keep them entertained, happy and safe. They either didn't know or didn't care about Abstraction, maybe even seeing it as the closest thing to death the uploaded minds can experience so letting it happen out of mercy.
