Honestly it's such a breath of fresh air to have a solid "action/adventure" show again. It sure as fuck ain't perfect, but holy shit have I missed having shows in the genre that are better than The Dragon Prince. And while the plot is more-or-less already decided, the writers are making enough tweaks to keep things interesting, in a "how will they adapt this?" way. Hell, the presentation has been good enough that I sort-of enjoyed Molly, a character I only ever tolerated in the podcast.

>>151732009I know, it's sickening. And it doesn't matter if it's been done Forever, that doesn't make it right, it's still problematic as fuck. Characters should be voiced by VAs from the same demographics as the characters.

Am I fucking retarded if I enjoy this way more than I enjoyed Frieren?
>>151731882I genuinely don't get people that think there's a limit to where people can pull their stories from. If the story is good, I don't care if it came straight from the brain of a hermit sitting on front of a typewriter in the woods, from a group of friends playing a round-robin writing game with dice, from the life experiences of a war vet (heavily edited by a friend), or is a modernized retelling of a lesser-known fairy tale told by a researcher that decided it'd be fun to put a new spin on things.
>>151732209It wasn't a good story in the first place BEFORE it got a cartoon adaptation, is the thing.
>>151732147That's what the argument DOES boil down to though. You either think VAs need to be just like the characters of you don't.I for one think that's fucking retarded.
>>151732186Eh, kinda. I'm a weaboo, but it's not like that particular show is flawless enough to be everyone's number one.
>>151732244I'm enjoying it. >>151732186You're not alone. I can see the appeal but holy fuck it dragged on after a while.

>>151732244You do know that they've heavily redacted the story, right? It's not an honest retelling of the second campaign at all.
>>151732009The Spanish dubbing is done by a woman, so I'm happy with that.
>>151732366It'd have to be by default, since otherwise they'd be animating all the out-of-character jokes, banter, and in-jokes tossed around by the humans playing the characters, so "not an honest retelling" of a boring rpg campaign is kind of expected.
>>151732339> That's the beauty of freedom of speechit's people like you who cause those freedoms to be revoked by misusing them to be nuisances.
>>151732186frieren is troonslop
>>151732395Exactly. Therefore, it doesn't really matter whether the original is good or not. It's not terrible, that's enough to work with.
>>151732410Sorry not everywhere can be a hug box, anon.>>151732430Care to elaborate further on what makes this adaptation good then, sir or ma'am?
>>151732450> Care to elaborate further on what makes this adaptation good then, sir or ma'am?There are interesting dynamics between Caleb, Nott and Beau. I like their characters, they're flawed enough to be engaging, but not enough to be off-putting. This is literally the only reason why I watch the show.
>>151732524You know what, that's fair enough. My dislike of the original podcast was based on not enjoying the characters or their interpersonal dynamics, but if they managed to properly retain all those in the transition to cartoon, then that does make it a good adaptation.
>>151732551I actually dropped the original after the second episode because it was extremely slow and boring, but I enjoy the cartoon. They've fully reworked the way the group meets, and it did wonders.

>>151732339>freedom of speechI mean, I didn't say you're not allowed. Just that it seems like a waste of time to sit around talking about how much you 100% hate a show instead of finding a show you at least partly like. But hey, your life, dude. >>151732366More "heavily edited" than "heavily redacted." They took the basic plots the different players (and DM) came up with, gave them to actual writers (and Sam) and edited it into a much more coherent narrative, keeping some of the better improv, dropping the dross, and handing the action scenes to some pretty solid directors. We never saw how Caleb and Nott met in the podcast. In the show it's 1/3 of the first episode (and the best third, for that matter).
>>151732071You keep trying to pretend it's about woke shit like that and not that male voices are a turn off. >b-but I can't tell it sounds female to me!Then you're deaf, retarded or disingenuous. Maybe any combo of those three.
>>151732824>Just that it seems like a waste of time to sit around talking about how much you 100% hate a show instead of finding a show you at least partly likeThing is, I didn't. That was your assumption, anon. And there's value in expressing both positivity and negativity. I go to plenty of threads and talk about stuff I like, I can just say whatever stupid opinion I have off the top of my head. But in threads about stuff I dislike, I have to actually properly articulate myself so that it stands up under scrutiny. If it can't, then either I didn't articulate it properly so that I learn an area in my communication skills that needs practice in, or if the opinion itself was weak then I gain insight to make me reconsider my own viewpoints.>But hey, your life, dude. Yes, it is my life, thank you for recognizing that.
>>151732834>male voices are a turn offI'm not attracted to Nott and that wouldn't change with a different voice. She's a fun horrible little goblin thing, I find her entertaining, the voice is fine for a horrid monster that occasionally shows signs of A Heart of Gold, but I have no desire to fuck her. If the design does something for you, you do you, but it does nothing for me.Now Doctor Girlfriend, THERE was a dilemma, because I could definitely tell it was a guy's voice, but the design was deliberately sexy as fuck.
>>151733006Her voice is offputting at the start, by the last season you don't even notice anymore.
>>151731855It's all so tiresome
>>151732209It's basically mad libs storytelling. The dm tries to get a plot going, the players (actors) try to avoid it and do whatever they want. The world building is always mid because it's pulling from a pre existing game with built in rules. At least with books/manga the author (ideally) goes in a thematic framework.
Post the scene when she spank her own ass
>>151732009So is Dr. Girlfriend
>>151732029It got enough momentum from the nerd chic wave to carry it to the pandemic streaming wave
>>151730805I thought this cast would be worse than the last one, but they actually seem more tolerable somehow. I still don't care for the overall style of the writing/dialogue, but I suspect that's a case of what I want out of a game is different than what I want out of a story.
>>151732186Frieren is just kinda bland. Mostly because you're following such a powerful individual + 2 progenies. There is never any sense of real threat or tension. Even when they fought the biggest danger in the animation ( a clone of Frieren herself lol) the whole tension of the fight is undercut by them telling the audience we know her weakness and can beat her.As far as modern Fantasy Anime goes, Dungeon Meshi is my top tier but it's arguably not very good as an anime early on.
>>151735352It's too chaotic. Too many people with too many stories going on. At least the people who played Nott and Jester are at least good at limiting themselves to support cast but the Circus Tiefling guy was a mistake.
>>151730805How horny is the goblin thing?
I laughed when Jester told Bjorn he should be her bitch when they were in prison. It's definitely my favorite dynamic. I like the relationship between Nott and the Caleb but the wizard feels too serious. Also very gay but Fantasy has always liked to peddle "alternative" romance
>>151735635I can't take Caleb seriously knowing he let a nigger rail his ass, shit's hilarious

>>151735600Buttslut
>>151734872>mad libsHas the concept of a "Round Robin" really died from public consciousness? You go around the table and everyone contributes the next bit of the story. There's a bit of a framework, and a guy that takes on a greater share of the storytelling, but it's still collaborative storytelling.>>151735600>"What you really mean is 'does she put out?.' Well, buy me a drink and find out, handsome."
>>151735467It depends on what you're looking for. A lot of people ONLY want the chill travel portions where there's no tension, just exploring the impact people have on one another in various ways. Others say that's the boring part and want to see demons getting lasered. In any case, there's some later arcs with genuine tension.
>>151730805Why does modern DnD content looks nothing like what I imagined as a lurker a decade ago?

>>151735962From the campaign she has a kid and later in the story ahs frequent sex with her husband But she doesn't have sex in goblin form
>>151735886What Wizard Markets and what the average nerd desires has changed. Plus women and minorities have moved in. Personally I'm fine with modern fantasy being more cosmopolitan I just wish they weren't so performatively gay.

This is now a goblin thread
>>151736028I don't blame you
>>151735992>Californiaized over the years and became streamlined so it became toothlessI'm not sure whether you're talking about storytelling or gameplay, but I for one am not missing the days when every fucking player wanted to be Raistlin Majere, Drizzt Do'Urden, or a goddamn "I'm playing as my dark side, it's just a game dude, anyway can I boil the skin off the child's face?" psycho.
>>151736096I'm talking about both You can still skin off a child's face but only one that turned out to be a part of the upper class and then have a sad character moment afterwards
>>151736118I also don't miss THAC0, sorry.
>>151735558Well on top of that I've never cared for the overall tone. It can't pick a lane between being indulgent/juvenile (I don't mean that as a bad thing necessarily btw) and being serious character drama, so it just swerving wildly from one side to the other. Again, makes me think of the difference between what I can accept as a player versus an audience. You know, it kinda reminds me of AtLA swinging between kiddo goofing around to heavy shit about war and loss and so on. Or rather it's a heavily exaggerated version of it. I don't think it works out so well when there's no constraints on what sort of content you can have.
>>151736128Don't be like thatI'm talking more of what happened during the 2010's even before dnd podcasts got popularWith Wizards fucking up 4e so bad that they had to make 5e to wash the taste out of people's mouths I'm 3.5 for life son

>>151736096Meh, the edgelords just got replaced with bigger sob stories. I've been in so many games where there's a tiefling who underwent terrible racist treatment in their backstory and then subsequently never encounters an ounce of prejudice during the campaign.
>>151736262>then subsequently never encounters an ounce of prejudice during the campaign. That's because most DMs don't know how to roleplay racism and when they do it's very boring
>>151730805>solid action/adventure showVox Machina has/had the same issue, being that you can have all the solid action/adventure you want. But if the writing is shit, it isn't going to help things.

>>151736192I'm currently in a 3.5 (with a bit of Pathfinder) and a 5E game. I much prefer how customizable 3.5 is, but I'm damn sure half the people I play with these days were enticed by how much easier 5E is to play. It's easy (and fun!) to be a snob, but with so many other options for "nerdy types" to occupy their time, I'm willing to make some concessions to get them into gaming. I'm pushing some of the 5E people into a pathfinder game when the current campaign ends, they've shown interest. I don't think there's need to be doom and gloom about there being a "training wheels" version of the game to reach more people. As for the supposed change in storytelling... meh. I look back on some of the games I played long long ago and honestly there's a good chunk that would've been right at home in the CR podcast. Hell, if memory serves the very first ep of that involved two of the cast looking for a brothel (which they found). There's differences, but in a "the more things change, the more they stay the same" way.Way more girls that aren't the DM's gf/wife playing, that's for damn sure.Hell I'm gaming with a fun funny guy that should've played a barbarian because that's how he plays his Paladin, and he's only there because his wife wanted to game a LOT more than he did.

>>151736571>Will they push Molly's death later?I hope not. They need to get a move on that ASAP. Total waste of a party slot.
>>151732244>BEFORE it got a cartoon adaptationWhy would you automatically assume the original would be better?

>>151736356Cool it with the anti-semitism, anon
>>151736802and i'm questioning why would you assume the original is better and not something that could be improved by making it into an actual story instead of 200 d&d sessions?
>>151736271Most DMs don't care to because either the player is a fragile snowflake and cries upon actually getting it, or they're addicted to revenge fantasies and will viciously murder the fuck out of every NPC that tries it. Which is okay the first few times, cause NPCs aren't actual people to care about, but then the player gets bitchy and moany that you aren't throwing in more for them to murder. So most DMs just do it in the most inoffensive way possible to get people to never ask for it or care about it. It's weird.

>>151730805Sex with NottSex with JesterSex with Molly
>>151738515Not surprising in Beau's case. The biggest problem was that she was a "brilliant detective" played by a player that was not a brilliant detective. And there was only so much that rolls could tell, and Matt wasn't sure how much info to give at any given time. Here they know how much info to dole out to the main characters at any given moment, and so we get scenes of Beau actually being good at her job. It's much easier to tolerate her attitude when she's legitimately going around doing a damn good job only to have her superiors throw her evidence in the trashbin.(Oh, and the Monk class is just not written well)

>>151740741He was written very differently in the original. Here he's a milksop whiner. In the original, the Nein met with the Kryn Dynasty to try and figure out a path to peace and Essek was a mage assigned to be their liaison. He was somewhat aloof and quirky, bookish, mysterious, but benevolent, and clearly the Nein amused the fuck out of him. He started showing them more favor than he really should as just a liaison, letting them get away with shit, doing favors when they said pretty please, and then one day oh shit he realized he was their friend. He had friends. That was novel. He'd never really had friends before. Oh, and he was a huge fucking traitor to the Empire, because he'd been sold on a dumbass "greater good" plan. The Nein helped save his ass when he came clean. The big reveal about him being a traitor with regrets came well into the campaign, whereas in the show it's revealed in, what, episode 2?Here they tried to make him more sympathetic and honestly fucked him up badly. He was way better as an introverted "never had real friends" nerd that made huge mistakes because ideas seemed good on paper and he had become so isolated he hadn't been thinking things through.
>>151740781>We will never see this in 5E.Well, never is a long time. Tome of Battle was the answer to people who wanted their fighter-type to be able to pull anime ninja shit. And guess what?
