Then it cuts back to the circus, with Ringmaster Pomni greeting the new batch of players. Kinger says in episode 3 that he likes the dark because it reminds him of the last tender moment he shared with his wife after she abstracted and before Caine sent her to the cellar. His disability is rooted in his own experience (for now, I'm taking his flashback as face value) and trauma. And when Jax flips out at the end of episode 7 and accuses Caine of messing with their minds, Kinger's first coherent thoughts aren't about himself but about Scratch. And I think it lessens his speech in episode 3 if his problems are caused by the godlike AI on purpose.
