Let's have a thread where we talk about Rankin/Bass media
>>151756918Flight of Dragons is still one of my favorite cartoons and my kids love it too.
>>151756918>there's like a half-dozen of these I've never heard of
>>151756918>t'was the night before chistmas girl I always have even a miracle needs a hand song suck in my head around this time
>>151756918I always thought it was interesting how they perfectly maintained a very specific style of designing characters that was present in their 2D stuff and their stop motion stuff. You can see the clear similarity from a character in Jack Frost, Hobbit, and Thundercats over a 15 year period.
Everyone loves and knows them for the claymation movies but I always found their 2D productions much better and the style of the 2D so much more charming.
>>151757605So she doesn't wear underwear!?
Thoughts on The Hobbit?
>>151758693Absolute Kino.
>>151758693Just make sure you find a rip of the VHS, the DVD and later digital versions are missing several sounds that are there on the VHS versions.
>>151758693>be me, little kid>watch The Hobbit cartoon on tv or possibly rented from blockbuster once or twice>don’t pay attention to the title or to the worldbuilding fantasy terminology that exists in literally no other context outside of JRRT at the time>flash forward, decade and change later>pick up The Hobbit book because Lord of the Rings movie is taking off>blasted with a strange sense of overwhelming deja vu the whole reading>takes years before rediscovering the cartoon lets it click whyFun experience.

>>151757605>>151759215Anymore cute rankin-bass girls?
>>151758693DOWN DOWN TO GOBLIN TOWN
>>151756918I love watching Rankin/Bass holiday specials around Christmas time. Rankin/Bass to me is an essential part of Christmas, even if we fail to do the other parts of the holiday, it would never feel ike Christmas to me if I didn't watch one. I love Rankin/Bass so much.
>>151756918Gonna break the cozy vibes real quick for a Rankin/Bass-related schizo rantSo the stop-motion Rankin/Bass Animagic films were animated in Japan by MOM Productions. They were written, designed, scored, and voice-acted by Americans. We call those AMERICAN films. You with me? Cool.I didn't get to respond to this, but there was a goofy FUCKNUGGET in another R/B thread who thought Nutcracker Fantasy- an /a/ holiday film by MOM Productions that RESEMBLES a Rankin/Bass production... was MADE by Rankin/Bass and is, therefore, American. No, no, NO goddammit, Nutcracker Fantasy is JAPANESE. It's made by the same studio that ANIMATED Rankin-Bass. All the designers, puppetmakers, and animators were Japanese, Sanrio funded and distributed the entire production for Christ's sake!Anyway rant over, the movie is kinda charming, a little slow though. Watch the US dub if you like Christopher Lee

>>151756918A lack of festive spirit makes me Ice Slizer.
FURZT TOY MAKER TO ZE KING
>>151761253The fact all the RB stuff is Japanese does explain a lot though. There are quite a few instances that always seemed off, like how the not alive snowman in Rudolph looks so weird. Also doesn't that also mean that all thr RB stuff is like, technically anime?
What was wrong with him?
>>151761253Isn't there that weird-ass link between Rankin Bass, The Last Unicorn, and the studio that would become Studio Ghibli?
>>151762780Carried around extraction tools but no anesthetic.
>>151762891They were two main groups that split after Topcraft went bankrupt, one was Miazaki's group the other group became Pacific Animation which did Thundercats and SilverHawk and was later bought up by Disney and became Walt Disney Animation Japan and animated the Tigger movie.

>>151765205>Reminding me of Jack Frost's quiet sufferingHE DESERVED BETTER
Never really understood the appeal of this guy
>>151766541
>>151766398No wonder he went on his incel arc in the second Frosty
>>151766398>>151766675There was no way Jack was going to match up to Ravenal Thundercock
Does anyone else remember pic related being a complete fever dream of a holiday special? Even as a kid I thought it was bizarre. Fucking time travel in an Easter special, because of course there is.
>>151758693THE GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREATEST ADVENTURE
>>151766675He seemed too okay when he fucked off to the clouds. Jack in the second Frosty is a petty madman
>>151766790>Claims she loves winter>Marries this golden faggot insteadPerformative as hell
>>151766541It's just a pretty neat songhttps://youtu.be/g9hoXG31fh4
>>151766869Give him centuries to stew over it
>>151766790>>151766869>>151767010He can always just use holly as an onahole
>>151758693A better and more faithful adaptation of the source material than the live action trilogy, despite being barely an hour fifteen long and ten minutes of that being musical sequences.
>>151760310There're these two cute girls from kid power

>>151762780I've heard he doesn't want to make toys!
>>151767275Never heard of it before, the designs are cute though.Saw the intro and thought the kid with the forage cap looked cool, thought it was a coloring error at first but seems not.Does he have some deep lore?
>>151756918Gotta give these guys props, they even made an indian women nice to look at
>>151767846Wouldn't blame you if you hadn't, most of the tv series is lost
>>151767277>>151767967Man, she was built for motherhood
>>151758422they were all animated by the same studio in Japan. they maintain that look even when they were operating independently, like with their stop-motion Nutcracker movie (which is technically a part of the Sanrio/Hello Kitty franchise now)
>>151758473they're not claymation, that's specifically an Aardman thing because they actually work with a type of modelling clay. Rankin/Bass used wooden and fabric dolls.
>>151760310their version of Alice in Wonderland had a cute Alice. they also had a gigatit gynoid in one of their Halloween specials.
>>151766541You're about 50 years removed from a time when people personified everything ESPECIALLY abstract conceptWinter especially was a mean bastard in every culture with a name for him
>>151766805after the show stopping success of their Christmas specials they tried to cash in on other holidays in the hopes of making their stuff a year-round thing. the Halloween ones are the best of the bunch. the Thanksgiving one stinks, the Easter ones are just weird, and they chickened out on St Paddy's Day and Fourth of July by making them Christmas specials at the last second.
>>151767846I had that book
>>151767846Ah, name is Nipper and he's just Turner's self insert.>>151767934Shame, from what I've seen on YouTube it's pretty charming and funny. Also damn, Ralphs a dick.https://youtu.be/lacVZ7YCthw?si=3-xTW7Ggkz9rRXNx>>151768403Was it any good?
>>151768481The strip's title was what Charles Schulz wanted to call "Peanuts" but the syndicate overrode him so he told Morrie Turner he could use it. It's not bad actually. You can see how it influenced "Boondocks."
>>151758693I watched it a million times as a kid. Makes me sad that they never did the entire LOTR trilogy.>>151758762There's a high quality version with a bunch of audio fixes on the Internet Archive.
>>151768203I so badly wish they made more Halloween specials, would've been really nice to have had more influential classics to look back on for the spooky season.
I once cosplayed as Yukon Cornilious.
