His job sucked ass and drained the life out of him. He sought either escape or the stimulation he lacked through writing about what he was actually interested in. But that took all his free time so his wife didn't get attention, and felt taken for granted.

Presumably their relationship got better after his resurrection. Since they actually getting to date instead of being assigned to eachother by PB.

And maybe he is now fulfilled by just his writing since he doesn't find bartending as soul-crushing. He at least mentioned writing with Simon in S1 of Fionna & Cake.

They didn't really give us anything conclusive.

This episode was the same kind of garbage as the one where Jake's kid finds the nurse's diary. Just low energy deadpan blah blah blah about how the characters feel. And not even the main characters in this case but side characters that were never made to be focused on.
