What's included in the IP? Does the new owner get the rights to all the music, shows and merchandise or is it just the rodents themselves? If it's everything them perhaps $30 million for a completely stale IP. If it's just the rodents then $300 and I'm making gay fetish porn just so they stay buried forever.
>>
>>151770825
They were never good. No, not even in the 90s/00s animated movies.
>>
>>151770825
What can you even do with them?
They have not been musically relevant in 5 decades
Their film era is over and their films are now seen as bargain bin direct to dvd tier, if they tried to make more they would bomb or not net newly as much as purchase piece
They already oversaturated tv shows
They barely sell merch, maybe low millions at most
What can you even do with a finished IP and characters who at best people remember exist that would recoup 300 million in price?
>>
>bro, what if we took music... and sped it up???
That's literally all their entire IP is. They should be worth a day-old soggy sandwich from Arby's, not 300 million.

No, it's not. They were only really useful as a brand in eras when modern music was the biggest thing.
>They worked in the 60s when everyone was adding music acts to their shows and bands would have guest appearances on sitcoms every week.
>Then they worked in the 80s when Mtv made music videos into a huge pop culture phenomenon and the Chipmunks got to imitate that by having their own cartoon music videos on the show.
Thing is the music industry kind of collapsed a while ago and there is no major modern acts to imitate with chipmunk voices to sell modern music to kids as easily. Or at least not nearly enough of them. So the brand is not really worth much these days,

I guess shit like Trolls and Sing took its place. Franchises built around a soundtrack of popular modern music. Those and media like them work more for modern music than the Chipmunks do. You can have the chipmunks rap, but people aren't going to enjoy it or find it charming like awhile back or even in the 2000s.

That ugly Nick show they still promote on Nicktoons for some reason showed they at least wanted to branch into more general kids concepts with episodic stories but I think it'd take both doing that an an artstyle rehaul to really have anyone latch onto it. I could see maybe a 2 season flash animated show on streaming for little kids that no one talks about but supposedly does fine, nothing more.

"chipmunks sing nightcore versions of 2010s pop songs" is NOT the type of IP that's built for longevity in this day and age, and the movies ruined any chance of them being seen outside of that aside from that one Nick show you sometimes see playing at the dentist.
When the music and cartoon industries are kinda in the fucking trash, there's not much they can offer anybody to be worth the money and resources.

The premise of a new movie is also really fucking simple. Time passed. Dave grew up. Had a kid. Make kid protagonist of new movie. Shennanigans with Chipmunk & Kid and new songs. Are they even still up for sale? If they are I imagine every buyer is well-aware that 300 million is far too high an asking price for the Chipmunks... without getting the rights to the widely-recognized Fox films. Seems like a pretty bad deal.

I'm also confident that other studios own Chipmunk content. Without looking it up, ClassicMedia/DreamWorks likely owns the Alvin show, and Universal owns the two monster crossovers. Nick broadcasts the TV show.

Funny enough, there actually is grounds for a relationship: if Universal bought the Chipmunks, the other Chipmunk content would be all under one entity. DreamWorks and Nick also have a good working relationship so they would probably be able to eke out a deal for the new Alvin cartoon.

Biggest problem for this series is that it's really only appealing to young kids, parents that have given up, and unironically mentally retarded adults with the minds of small kids. It just lacks the all ages appeal of things like Sonic and The Simpsons.

>$300M
Sounds more like a "fuck off and leave us alone" amount than anything.
>>
>>151778196
Yeah, but there's next to no proof that the franchise can sustain mainstream success in the modern day. Outside of the hybrid Chipmunk films, there aren't any clear or diverse enough signs that would convince potential buyers that those movies- and the franchise as a whole- weren't just flash-in-the-pan fads. When Nick bought Garfield, Garfield regularly had the comics, movies, a show, several licensed video games, and a shit-ton of brand and licensing deals. Chipmunks licensing died when the movies did.
>>
>>151778869
The Chipmunks had been around for almost 50 years at that point. Admittedly they absolutely can't sustain something thats..... well... sustained.... but the 4 live action movies gross a combined 1.4 billion on a combined budget of like 400mil. Factor in any merchandise and streaming rights and that's definitely profitable.
>>
>>151772088
None money
>>
>>151770825
Is this the original owner getting the rights back after nothing not being released in 10 years? I assume no one wants them because the taste of Road Chip still isn't out of everyone's mouth. Maybe in a couple of years they can reboot the idea of popular songs sped up for kids. Maybe reboot it as Woojin and Daramji to give it a K-Pop vibe.
>>
>>151778892
50 down, 45 to go until we get Alvin & the Chipmunks horror.
>>
>>151770825
Because they’re worthless?

Most people don’t want to listen to those squeaky vocals nor do they want squeaky versions of songs they don’t like or songs they already like. Also they typically used trends in the music industry to have more relevance (like the MTV boom causing them to make a bunch of cartoon music videos) but the music industry hasn’t done anything new in ages besides streaming. And with streaming and youtube children don’t have to rely on their parents to buy them “children’s music” like them or Kidz Bop.
>>
the bagdasarian son is giving up?
>>
>>151778892
You're not wrong, but what I'm getting at is that the movies were done by Fox/Regency. They could always do another film reboot under a different crew, but then they'd have to get new actors, new designs, new stories...

I think about how Paramount's Smurfs did relative to the success of the live-action films. It feels like a toss-up whether you could even recoup those costs when your biggest success story is one (maybe two, the 80s Chipmunk show did pretty well in syndication) particular iterations of a 50-year old franchise.

(Too lazy to check if this thread's even still relevant at all. The Twitter post is almost 5 years old now and I'm not gonna bother checking to see if A&C have been sold yet.)

The Chipmunks are always going to be a bit of an uphill battle in modern times because their entire gimmick is just singing normal songs but pitched up, which is piss easy to do.
I personally made a lot of "chipmunk duets" growing up for some reason, separating the vocals (usually from Evanescence) from the music, pitching it up, then layering it back onto the original song and offsetting it slightly to make it sound like a duet. No, I don't know why I did this.
Being a whole-ass franchise about pitching up songs is doubly an issue because they have to license those songs before editing it, which costs money, and licensing wasn't as much of a hellhole back then. Now, you run a not-zero percent risk of coming out with a whole A&C movie, then having the trailers get flagged
It doesn't help that there's also now this balance between wanting to keep them "classic" by having them only do more "mature" songs and going all in by having them sing modern songs and twerking or whatever.

Giving any IP a live action late 2000s road trip movie is guarenteed to put them on anyones permanent shitlist.

Crazy how we went from this to K-Pop Demon Hunters.
My generation definitely got short-changed.

Chipmunks only worked in the 80s with the show from that era and the movie was the highlight, the lowest was the final season of generic movie parodies.

Were the live action movies leased or rented or whatever the business term is? I'd have thought some big corpo has already owned it by now
