Wise words from the Ralph Bakshi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-Zte_Ijw8g
He absolutely SLAMS indie animators in this never-before-seen clip!
>>
I want to make independent animations, but I'm in my early 20's, can't get a retail job, can't do commissions because I have few followers, can't get a studio job because I'm inexperienced, and my family doesn't own any companies that they just hire me to work at.

Any advice?

nothing ralph said was incorrect
sour grapes from his peers and contemporaries
>>

why'd he need a kickstarter to make a short film then
>too or tree goiyz can maek a filme oul bi demshelves if dey do it oba da weekends!
a small circle of people dedicating a few hours once a week to make an animated feature? ok ralphy
also someone needs to buy the equipment and computers needed to "spit out" the film, too

Don’t act like Ralph Bakshi doesn’t know what he’s talking about, like yes, it is true that animation is experiencing a new slump in a very different and the industry is very different from how it was all those years ago, and I definitely can’t see the it improving anytime soon, but at the core of it, if you have talent and skill, you can make indie shows or shorts on your own, it’s not even da compyudahs but we have more technology making the materials to animate more accessible than ever. I literally spend all of my free time improving my skills with art and animation and do plan on eventually getting into indie animation on my own. It’s better than just sitting your lazy ass on the couch whining about the industry being dead and shit.

Come back when you make your own Fritz the Cat or Coonskin

>you can make indie shows or shorts on your own
No. You. Can't.
Someone would've done it already. You need connections, and you need money to pay your animator colleagues.

You don't. You can go low budget. Making a slideshow in PowerPoint counts. A video of sliding around paper cutouts count. Create for the sake of creating.

However, the actual hurdle we face is energy. I don't have the energy to do SHIT when I get home from my 9-5. I'm so fucking drained I can't even enjoy my hobbies, let alone find motivation for proper exercise and meals.

Bakshi's solution to that was cocaine and a lot of our contemporaries abuse caffeine and some other stimulants. I don't really want to do that, which might look like a lack of passion on my part.

Poasting in a shitty thread.

You can't because you're lazy, directionless, and entitled.

In time of low prosperity its the technically oriented autists that refuse anything but perfection falter and die on the vine, while the people who desperately just want to get an idea out there regardless of quality may eventually put something out that works.

Oh adding to my thought - the popular indie companies we're seeing right now have hella start-up cash. Vivzie is from a rich family, and that Gooseworx man has lots of connections too. So no, any truly indie projects we start from a commoner's place won't be getting plushies at Hot Topic. But that's not a good reason to make cartoons.

Not everything has to be a franchise. Not everything has to be an epic. Sometimes you just make a thing and go "haha that was fun, I'll do it again some time."
>>
I like Joe but Ralph Bashki literally made his movies did 90% of his movies training random black guys he got off the street of Harlem NY in a back alley warehouse working until they finished a movie. Or at least one of them I heard, that in mind what's to stop you guys from picking up YNs off the street to do the same?
>>
>>151775971

Every time.
I bet you think Undertale and Hollow Knight aren't actually indie either.

1. Don't spend all your money at pricey art schools. If you can, learn to do art from some state university. Don't go to SVA or SCAD or CalArts.
2. Keep drawing what you like and try to specialize in some niche art subject to help grow your social media.
3. Grind your fundies. Learn to draw the human body first, then do gestures, and then do short animations.
4. Decide whether this is gonna be a hobby or a profession. If you decide to make it into a profession, be prepared to make huge sacrifices for your career (and may G_D have mercy on your soul).
5. GET A DAY JOB. All successful artists had to toil away at some bullshit job before they broke into the industry. Unless you're a nepo baby like Vivienne Medrano then you're gonna have to slave like the rest of us do.
Take it or leave it. Art biz is a brutal business.

I didn't say they weren't indie. But there's different classes of indie. I don't have family or friends to stay with if I lose my main source of income, which means pouring my heart into an project is a little riskier than someone who does. Someone who has a deal with Amazon or someone who has a Homestuck-at-its-peak endorsement.

And I don't need those big things to make something nice, but they sure would help.

What if I have horrid spatial awareness and can't? Will downing bottles of ritalin help me learn? I know some girl who was in a similar rut but she quickly got on meds and now she's one of those "50k followers on sm for drawing depressed animes" people

I think he means making shorts to get started.
>>

Unironically yes. We've got computers now to really hammer in how smooth everything can be. Time to bring the grit back to show how hard you worked on it.

I think when people say they can't make a cartoon, theyre comparing themselves to the polished stuff. Go watch the weird experimental stuff from old 80s Sesame Street, see what options you have

Unlike John K, regardless of what he contributed in earnest. Ralph Bakshi has a sense of humor and would not get offended by Joe at all.

>If you can, learn to do art from some state university. Don't go to SVA or SCAD or CalArts.
this is a retarded no-draws argument, state university art schools are a fucking waste and you'll learn nothing productive you wouldn't learn on your own. If you can't go to a major networking at school, just don't go period and choose another major. Networking is half he point of art schools and no one is going to hire some rando from state university who was ought how to shade realistic pencil portraits with a tortillon. You will not learn skills that are in-demand in the industry, no one knows what these no-name programs entitle so no one is going to see you got a bachelor of fne arts from Statetech and think you're animation material.
You can make a decent portfolio but you could do that without most of these schools. There is a slight chance you get a program headed by a retired animator who moved back to his home state after work got slow, but that's few and far between.
The reason CalArts people get hired isn't just nepotistm, it's because people know they've worked in an industry eco-system.
>3. Grind your fundies. Learn to draw the human body first, then do gestures, and then do short animations.
this has it's heart in the right place but don't wait to animate until you're perfect, you should be trying as much as you can in between even if it sucks.
>>
>>151783352
>$240,000 for networking and a CHANCE to find pro work
Cuck mindset
>>
>>151774424

You don't need followers, just draw in a broad but focused enough style that it will draw attention from autistic customers

Don’t mean to discredit his accomplishments, but put up or shut up, Mr. “I know what’s best for animation but fell into obscurity in the 1990s even though that would’ve been the easiest time to make an impact”
>>
>>151784384
It's literally never been easier to create animation at home, and then put it out there for the world to see. Stop being a baby.

I follow multiple indie animators on Youtube who put out some unbelievably good work on their own time and dime and here (you) are bitching about their work being impossible.
