I have been casually enjoying the hobby since a decade ago, focusing more on getting through an omnibus or other collected edition for most of that time. It took me until 2023 to start getting a pull list set up and going through series as they're ongoing. Thinking back on it has made me curious about how people tend to read their comics. Do you pick up the latest issues at your local shop? Do you wait for the collected versions? Do you use the app, or read it online? I'm especially curious about if there are people who wait for something to be fully done or who follow just through trade paperbacks and how they keep their patience for so long.

I generally try to avoid omnibus editions because I find them too annoying to read comfortably. I used to keep up with monthly floppies on a pull list, but after a while it felt like I ended up buying a lot of comics that I didn't end up enjoying. These days I tend to read older stuff or wait for buzz around a book before I start collecting it. If something I want to read is collected in a standard graphic novel I will usually pick that version up, but I also enjoy digging through comic store bins for older floppies.

Do you get through the months of wait for series you are interested in by going through the older stuff you have? Or do you sometimes get tempted to go back to floppies to keep up with everybody else?

I don't really read modern comics, I just get trade paperbacks of the old stuff

would like to have a pull list of floppies but most of what i want to follow gets cancelled

would love to get TPBs but most of what i want now doesn't exist or might be way too expensive

That was me recently with the Demon Days Treasury Edition. I sat on it and didn't see it get so expensive.
It's cute to see that you keep up with the storytimes.

I've only been reading older books for now

What got cancelled for you?

I’ve been using digital since 2011, when I was in college I had to sell my forty long boxes for food and when I got back into comics I really didn’t want to have to deal with storing comics anymore and I’ve never really been a collector just a reader so digital is great for me. I do have omnibuses and Absolute editions of books I really love in case the grid ever goes down but like 95% of my comics are digital now.

A buddy of mine has kids who love Spider-Man and Captain America but is worried about the content of modern comics so I pointed him to the Epic collections of the original Stan and Steve run but apparently Marvel doesn’t feel that needs to stay in print and after market prices are insane

My go-to is reading comics on my phone. I mostly pirate, but do have a sub to 2000AD and Judge Dredd The Megazine (which feels worth it to me)

I tend to favor paperbacks, mostly DC's Finest and Marvel's Epic Collections. Sometimes it's stuff I've either read before and want to read again or stuff that I'm curious about (My favorites are Killraven, Plastic Man & Legion Of Super-Heroes)

I do like Compendiums (just recently bought both of the Sandman Mystery Theatre volumes), but they kind of fall under the purview of Omnis to me where they take a bit too much space on my bookshelf

Epic Collection reruns could happen a lot more often. God forbid you try to collect some X-Men and have to either drive to the next state for an honest price or pay 5 times what it went for.

i read the first issue and if i like it ill buy the entire thing.
its a stupid way to read comics but it works for me.

How many times have you given something a second chance?

What kills me is that the "fan poll" is usually locked behind a patreon for Uncanny Omar (which amazes me considering how small the channel is) and it's almost always something newer like Guardians or Dikto era Spider-man and nothing else

It used to be that they reprinted stuff that was years out of date and OOP, but not anymore. And with prices increasing for the Epic Collections, it seems less and less worthwhile

I read older comics big two and otherwise.

oh a good few times.
i actually went back to read irredeemable after being told to read it for years, it was still as poop as i thought so im glad i didnt buy

Pirate more recent but not brand-new stuff online
