>Sony is paying more than a few peanuts to get majority ownership of Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Peanuts franchise featuring Snoopy, Charlie Brown and more.

ehh, does this mean Apple won't be hogging all of Peanuts movies and such on their App no one uses?

>This deal eliminated Wildbrains entire debt and they can start working on Strawberry Shortcake and Teletubbies

Hey, if people still like those then good for them I guess
>>
>>151778245
Good for them. I wondered who owned them before this
>>
Sweet, no more Apple+ bogarding it.
>>
>>151778245
hahaha classic chuck
>>

Well, at least Apple TV won't hoard it.

>in $457 Million Deal
How are they not worth more than that I still see peanuts merch everywhere
>>
Apple renewed their contract through 2030, sadly. But hey, light at the end of the tunnel.
>>
>>151778319
Thank god apple has the most unused streaming app, nobody ever uses it and the promotion for it is trash.
>>
>>151778245
What do you think Sony would do with Peanuts?
>>
>>151778541
Peanuts Hanukkah Special
>>
For faggots who cannot read:
Wildbrain sold their 41% share in Peanuts to Sony for $457 million. They now own 80% of Peanuts as the had 39% stake before. The Schulz estate owns the other 20% and this does not change.
>>
>>151778343
It was joint ownership between Sony Music Japan and Wildbrain with the Schulz estate owning 20%. This means Sony owns the complete 80% while Jeannie Schulz and her sons own the other 20%.

When did Carlos get a job as a journalist
>>

Where does Apple fall into this?
>>
>>151778617
Quite the fumble for Wildbrain but, at least Schulz is still taken care of

Bring back the 2018 scrapped redesign, this looked like it was going to make Bitch Pudding canon
>>
>>151778245
So...Peanuts anime, then?
>>
>>151778245
Sony Music Entertianment Japan has owned a stake in Peanuts since 2018, this is just that part buying Wild Brain's part. The Schulz family still has 20% and a lot of say in what Peanuts specials and movies do.
>>151778319
Nope, that deal continues for 5 more years. Wild Brain will be making new specials too.
>>
>>151778245
What's going to happen to the Wildbrain/Apple TV Peanuts movie that started development a while back? Is this a Garfield situation where the movie's getting finished irregardless of the purchase?
>>
>>151780119
It'll still get made but any movies they make after honoring that contract will have Sony get a piece of the profits

Not the first time a corporate entity held a 80% stake in Peanuts Worldwide. Iconix Brand Group had a 80% share until 2017 when Wildbrain took over (then called DHX).

How was the Apple TV show?

I watched an episode or two. I didn't think it was bad but it was very safe, none of the harsher humour I feel like Peanuts carries. And it felt a bit too heavy on the morals but I can't knock that too much

Any predictions on what Sony will do for the brand? They're big on movies but I can't think of a single series they carry
>>
Peanuts is very popular in Japan so it's not too surprising
>>
>>151783890
It's popular in America too
Not so sure how big it is over here in the UK
I see Snoopy stuff but it's not like you get Peanuts fans who could name a few characters

>It's popular in America too
Not to the same degree
Peanuts is popular in the US but Japan goes apeshit for Snoopy
There's a whole museum and everything
I think in the US Peanuts' popularity has steadily decreased since the comic ended a quarter century ago. Prob their biggest exposure is at the Cedar Fair parks or something
I like them well enough but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little disappointing the parks near here are so reliant on a property that was last relevant 4 presidents ago, hard to get excited over
>>
>>151784752
The US has a museum too? Opened in 2001.
>>
>>151784752
Ah right
I thought Peanuts was pretty huge over there for some reason
It's well known I guess but just not as relevant it seems. I know Japan does love it like you say.
>>
>>151784752
I know it's just the nostalgia talking, but I miss when all those parks were owned by Paramount. Never really cared for the Peanuts integration.
>>
>>151783689
I really quite like the Apple TV stuff, but the main issue is that it's missing the romantic themes that the strip has. That's where all the deficiency is, why it doesn't feel quite like a complete adaptation of the characters.
>>
>>151784353
I'd say it's pretty damn popular here in the UK. They currently have a Snoopy-themed trail in Fleet Street with multiple contemporary artists showing their love. They also had an exhibit at Somerset House in 2018, which I remember was pretty successful.
>>
>>151785447
That's the weird thing to me though
Because I see events and things like that, hell I'll even see merchandise here and there, but it feels like it's never in the general/public attention in the way other popular franchises are. I don't know many people who'd recognise Peanuts from just the name. They might know Charlie Brown though but even then in limited capacity.
>>
>>151785037
I've been meaning to watch the Musical one
I watched Lucy's school, The New Years one and I think there's one with Peppermint Patty and mothers day which was nice.

I don't think it's the romance that's lacking personally, I feel like it's all around the characters are a bit pared back to make for friendlier versions so morals can be driven home. It's very much a slice of life show whereas I'm not sure I'd categorise older Peanuts stuff as that.

Didn't Apple have ownership of the tv/film rights before?
>>
>>151778541
Animated movie most likely.
>>
>>151778596
Wow, when I think of Wildbrain, I just think of old DiC crap from the 80-s and 90s. I didn't know they owned anything worth a damn.
>>
>>151779522
They already have some new show
>>
>>151784752
Do they still get Met Life Insurance commercials?
>>
>>151785447
At least, Terry Wogan seemed to think so:

(Schultz was interviewed on Wogan, but the mods won't let me post the link. If you search "Charles Schultz Wogan" on Google you should find it)

Damn you Sony...
