I didn't give this movie enough credit as a kid. This is a really fucking good movie. I had always lumped it in with the "boring Disney movies" like Brother Bear and Pocahontas. I guess I was just always comparing shit to Aladdin, Hercules and Tarzan.

Obligatory “Hellfire is one of, if not the, best Disney villain songs
>>151778920Even as a kid I recognized the Out There segment as a pretty good scene but as an adult it's phenomenal, particularly the shot of Quasi sliding down the water drain while the camera circles around him and the music hits its crescendo. Visually I think it's the best you can see from Deep Canvas and proof of how beautiful a 2D film with 3D camera and background elements can be.

>>151781321As a Catholic, when I revisited the movie in adulthood to find that the spooky chorus was actually replying to Frollo using relevant responses from the Latin Mass my mind was blown.Modern Disney would never bother with that sort of attention to detail and subtlety."It's not my fault!'>MEA CULPA (my fault)"I'm not to blame...">MEA CULPA (my fault)"It was the gypsy girl, the witch, who set this flame!">MEA MAXIMA CULPA (my most grievous fault)Pure cinema.>>151781985Very. If they had avoided the temptation to add the wacky gargoyles it would be near-perfect.
>>151781321Court of Miracles was better.
>>151782637For the non catholics, this is a prayer we do during mass to confess our minor sins before taking Communion. Which Frollo ain't doing because he's blaming it all on others.
Read the book. Then you'll see it's just one more sanitized version of the original story.Esmeralda was nicely drawn though.
>>151778920This movie is definitely more interesting when you're an adult
>>151782919Not exactly surprising. Disney's always operated that way. Still doesn't take away from the fact The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of their most ambitious and stimulating adaptations to this day. I genuinely fear they're incapable of making something like it ever again
