this is not ALWAYS true. Often, explaining it ruins it. especially when the joke relies on you understanding it already. Or especially if it's the one where you don't get it right away, it takes a second.
buuuut there's also jokes you can totally explain, especially if they're foreign, and people will enjoy the journey.

What I hate most is when they both explain it AND show it. you can't do both! it's show OR tell.
