Why aren’t there more Big Two fan comics on the web (outside of porn or gag strips)? I understand that most people probably think it more profitable to make “original” equivalents of Big Two characters and go from there, but the interwebs allow you to make fanfiction without needing to worry about profitability. And with how popular a lot of characters are, I’m really rather surprised that it seems to mostly be MCU fanfiction or slice-of-life gag a day stuff on here. I’ve never seen a full, proper attempt at writing a superhero story with Big Two characters as the stars.I can recall one exception: that Batman/Spider-Man crossover being posted here from time to time by the author. But that’s it, and I find it really hard to believe that nobody else out there is trying to make something original with these older characters. Are modern Big Two comics just that dead? Or is everything on some obscure platform that I’m unaware of?Pic unrelated, I just needed an image and thought this panel was funny.
>>151783853Most fan comics are on tumblr and the like.
>>151783853Anyone big enough to pull a fan comic ends up working in one of the big two, maybe doing an Image original on the side. But yeah, ocne you graduate into being a pro, few see reason to do something like that. Excuse me for bringing up japan out of nowhere, but them being allowed to sell their fan magazines without fear of a company executing them (not counting exceptions), i guess is another reason as to why there's a larger scene over there, also why pro authors also do doujins, although sometimes under a pseudonym. And well, you have to consider that the fanfic market is already small to begin with. Because when you consider actually drawing, most people are just not willing to invest the time into something they can't even profit from. It sucks, but everyone is autistic enough for that.
>make fan-comic of big 2 characters>get sued by IP rights holders because you are using their character without their permissionYou aren't going to get sued for making fan fiction or fan art of copyrighted characters, but once you start making your own comic/cartoon/videogame about someone else's copyrighted character, they are effectively forced to shut you down to protect their copyright. Porn 'parodies' get ignored for obvious reasons, but no IP rights holder will let something that would weaken their copyright stand.

>>151783853I distinctly remember a Spider-ManxDeadpool fancomic that predated the official one. There’s also A Study in Scarlet and Blue but that’s really just one comic with a definite conclusion and a bunch of drawings after.

I think there's a few factors. For one comics just aren't as big as manga is relatively, Doujins grew out of Japan's big comic industry. Many doujin creators have the opportunity, or come from, working in manga in other capacity. Sure there are pure hobbyists, but even they have a chance making a living off this, or decent income on the side.Less chance to do that with zines. You're on your own there, the other factor is the general art styles of the big two. Back in the 60s-80s there were many zines made the house style of the bug two, clearly using a lot of swipes of referencesBut comic art has gotten far mire detailed overall than A hobbyist can reasonably copy John Buscema house style Marvel. They won't be Buscema, but they can figure out the shorthand of it to imitate it. And its fast to draw by designBut someone like Jim Lee or Jason Fabok? those styles are more complex and more time consuming. Its harder to "figure it out" and draw in their style without heavy referencing. It's not that manga/anime styles are easier per se, but they use more digestible linework for fanartists to imitate. Maybe they can't nail the linework but they can do the hair and eyes and face in a recognizable way. There's books out there on how to draw MHA characters simply to bring it down to their most recognizable featuresAnd besides that..mostly comic art just isn't popular with the type of fanartists who'd have the time to make fancomics. Like is there any artist in comics right now your average 18025 year old artist would know? I guess Mora and Jorge Jiminez. But even Jiminez's style is more complicated than most artists are willing to imitate. There's just so many precise LINES in comic art when the emerging popular style is digital rendering.
