In his later years, when he mellowed out, John said that he enjoyed it for what it was, which is basically a nice way of saying that it was bad but harmless enough for him to stand watching it with Sean.It was also stated in their contract that The Beatles had to physically appear in the three movies they were making; so that's why they're there at the end of Yellow Submarine. They filmed the cameo in some random room at Apple iirc. Though it is true that they weren't expecting much of the movie, or even for it to be any good--until they saw it. But yeah, they were impressed enough to write some additional songs for the movie/album ("Hey Bulldog", "All Together Now")
