surprisingly, I haven't seen any threads about this thing. It premieres today at 11 PM EST.
>>151788987Is this show meant to be a continuous narrative, or is it more a collection of thematically related(?) short stories. If it's the former I'm curious as to how they'd make it satisfying if they have no idea what the other writers were doing.
>>151788987>pretentious calarts slopi sleep.
>>151788987threads will be insufferable schizo honeypots, and I plan on avoiding them altogetherbut pretty hyped for the special (even though it’s jus a half-hour)
>>151789358it's only a half hour? why even bother?
>>151789335>the people running it have zero talent and can only draw in generic LA simplified artstyleokay but you do realize the people who worked on this invented those art styles, right?
Any links? The site where I used to watch adult swim is no longer working
>>151790299The special hasn't aired yet.
>>151789364Probably even less... I'd imagine 7 minutes each. Lame, but it explains why it's coming out less than a year after announcement. Just treat it like a special episode of a show.
>>151788987>more unearned DEI work for Rebecca Sugar>wow why doesn’t anyone care about this?Gee I wonder>>151789173The description says the three people who worked on it were not told what the others were doing. So it’s just gonna be 3 shorts barely connected by a theme
>>151788987Can't wait, should be cool
>>151789511Woah... the inventors of shit...
>>151788987Just give McHale his own show and let the rest of the hacks fade into obscurity.

>>151793794Its literally about a suicidal tranny
Did anyone record it?
>>151793783Good.
I hated Pen Ward’s dude weed lmao 3x speed brainrot with le epic references and lolsoranumb ironically bad voice acting segment….but Rebecca Sugar/Ian QJ’s lovecraftian rave jam with semi-autobiographical commentary was surprisingly good, and Pat McHale’s funny slice of melancholy with style changes was great. The later two segments understood the assignment of making an interpretative statement on “living in the present” and “facing an ending” respectively. Seeing them immediately follow Pen’s schizo nonsense just demonstrates how dangerous becoming a stoner is to any artist. His art was cool in a vague sense, but it’s incoherent chaos that annoys you vs. Rebecca’s segment showing a chaotic story in a palatable way.Really wish it was longer. The rushed nature doesn’t help it. Glad it exists though. Would watch one of these sort of things again.

>>151793865Allahu Akbar
>>151793845Kudos for sharing your sincere thoughts. Pen's segment is definitely one I'll have to watch a second time to fully take in everything, but I'd argue it still got its point across about "the beginning providing endless opportunity."

>>151794138I’ll watch it again. The last scene does actually hint at a theme instead of disconnected flashy images, but the other segments do that so much better, so it feels like giving pity compliments. I never watched The Midnight Gospel, but I imagine the podcast commentary gives the vocals a constant thematic reference point, and it doesn’t have a “have to freeze-frame to understand” tiktok pace. I’ll admit, his segment struck a strange nerve in me and I might be more annoyed with it than others who’d watch it.And then I read an interview in Animation Magazine and find out he was struggling to complete his fucking six minutes of plotless reddit bait, and had to get outside help. Probably had to take a lot of breaks to smoke some more weed. I bet the other directors didn’t go through that, their shorts feel like they’re bursting at the seams with ideas. Even his contemporary’s similarly surreal short Jesus 2 is much better. Sorry for the inner rage, I don’t know where it’s coming from. Maybe disappointment in how Pen sabotaged his potential post Adventure Time?
Actually, I scanned the QR code that shows up in the first short and now I’m forced to rate it higher.https://www.adultswim.com/theelephant/

Enjoyed it a lot, hoping we get a better rip with clearer audio and no TV bug tomorrow once it's on streaming.>>151794597Okay that's based.
>>151794482I'd love to hear your thoughts on his adultswim pilot from last year
Is the Behind the Scenes thing also gonna be on HBO Max? Someone oughta rip that too if that's the case

>>151795493But this did have a waifu
So is it good or noTell me before I watch it
>>151794464Thanks. Lots of fun to go frame-by-frame through. This is a special thing. On rewatch, I was a faggot on Pen's short. It's still my least favorite, and I think the humor is weak, but I noticed his is the only one that has a truly captivating original soundtrack, and the visuals are really striking. He went for a surreal film festival vibe when the other directors went for more of a narrative, so it sticks out, but sticking out isn't inherently a bad thing for what's supposed to be a fun experiment.Amazingly, despite being so visually driven, he couldn't help himself but to sneak in a subtle they/them when referring to a cat creature. Even Rebecca's didn't do that.>>151795311I thought it was ok. Overly polite mystery caper was entertaining enough, though I think the art style was a little TOO simplistic. Snake tits lady made up for it.
>>151795188I instantly knew Remus & Kiki worked on the middle segment. Felt like the perfect blend of their style with Ian's
>>151795537Yeah it's good, also it's only 22 minutes.
>>151795341Next Day HBO Max premieres usually drop at 9am EST, so it might be a while
>>151795188>Nick DiLibertoI thought they were going for a Sally Cruikshank style, but seeing this credit makes a lot of sense.Anybody know who J.K. is?
I'm all for giving creators essentially a blank check to make whatever, unless you're John K.
>>151795777What a provocative take, anon. You sure are a rebel.
The making of documentary just aired, it was pretty cool. It’ll probably be up later.
>>151795542The character is an exquisite corpse, I think it makes sense that someone would consider it a they.
>>151795848Nvm, saw you meant the cat. I still don’t think it matters much.
mega when? /spoiler]
>>151795814Never heard of "Exquisite Corpse" before, but it was an interesting direction to take with this project.
>>151795853Different anon here, just checked. It was actually referring to the weird frog stick creature, which was basically also an exquisite corpse. But yeah, not too consequential regardless.
>>1517889873 > 2 > literal dogshit > 1
I prefer the original
>>151794464Thanks. I'll have a comfy watch later on.
I am so tired of hearing this guys voice in everything
>>151788987Jesus, McHale's short completely mogged the other two and it wasn't even close.
My favorite was the last one
>>151792116Correct. I'm sick of these millennials making the exact same shit from 15 years ago. Western animation cannot die fast enough

They tried to go experimental and I can respect that, but it's way too short to have any lasting impact whatsoever.
>>151797846Holy based. Didn't expect both of these so early. That quality is noticeably better!
>>151795766The J.K. thing is driving me kind of nuts because the most infamous "J.K." in animation would have reason to want to stay anonymous but there is no way either stylistically or morally that could have been THAT "J.K."
>>151788987Goddammit I can't stomach watching these animation"superstars" living the dream that I never got to. >>151795553remus&kiki honestly deserve a pilot or show after all the good work they’ve done for [as]
>>151797846Strangely enough I found the making of more entertaining than the short itself. Still liked it overall though the final part is easily the best.
>>151795493This
>>151788987>>151793850This should be a double feature.
>>151788987Just watched the special. It was cool but it definitely felt like something that would more so appeal to other animators rather than a general audience. It kind of reminded me of the kind of things that would air on the Nicktoons Film Festival.I think Act 3 was my least favorite, started strong but then lost momentum in the back half with the faux-anime portion. This was probably intentional, and it wasn't bad, I just didn't really vibe with it; just didn't have the same "energy" as the other acts.
>>151798705anon's presumably alluding to John Krisfalusi (the Ren & Stimpy guy), though it's really obviously not his style>>151798635I was figuring "oh it's probably some cool sounding professional name/online alias the artist goes by, we'll see them in the documentary" but then when Pat is talking about the artists he worked with J.K. doesn't get brought up at all
>>151798717Pen talks about his storyboard in the documentary, so I'm guessing he probably did the initial rough first pass thumbnails while Herpich and Magno did the final more detailed board
>>151799640The credits were J(ust) K(idding), obviously.
The documentary is really neat. It's cool that the MCs of each Act were designed using the "exquisite corpse" method.
>>151797527Pal, anime isn't getting any better either with the isekai overuse.
>>151793845RS/IQJ always were the most normal of the AT generation. And seemed to have ideas for stories outside the bubble.I have no doubt they could of pulled off a Adventure Comic adaption or Pilot SU thing if they were told to keep it concise.
>>151797846Blessed
>>151800353At least isekai seems to be dying down. R-right?
>>151800254This was awesome. The game master mechanics of making the special seem like a lot of fun. How each creator contributed a piece to the characters, and tried to piece a story from there, make me love it even more. Hilarious that Patrick McHale basically drew an In the Aeroplane Over the Sea girl thinking “this’ll throw them off”, but then Rebecca drew her holding a cat, so Pen was like “I can work with this.”
