I predict this is a situation where the characters wanted to escape and get rid of their memories in the process to escape some pain or guilt on an individual, maybe collective level. But the irony is they can't live happily until they escape the self-made prison, which then will probably force them to solve and fix the traumas that led them to the circus in the first place. Jax I don't think is soley traumatized by those who aren't in the Circus anymore, I feel like either he and the frog knew each other irl or the situation compounded his pre-existing trauma.
