Is propane really better than charcoal?

I've been watching this show for a while now and I can't get this out of my mind. Could someone with grilling experience please enlighten us?
>>
>>151801808
I've never tasted a difference. The show itself posits that charcoal is better several times though.
>>
>>151801832
High quality charcoal> Propane> Cheap charcoal.

But the best way to prepare meat is on a flat top to keep the juices in, and whatever is used to heat that is irrelevant.
>>
I think the joke is that charcoal really is better but Hank's pride keeps him from seeing it.
>>
>>151801808
Basically every restaurant ever uses charcoal
You don't want a 'clean' taste in fucking barbecue
>>
>>151801880
Thanks
>>
>>151801808
Charcoal gives a much more smokey overtone to meat. They advertise propain as
>taste the meat, not the heat
As a way of basically saying you won't get the charcoal-infused smokey flavor over it, which is more of like a sidegrade contextually, situational, and depends on if you like it or not. Smokey steak is good, but a steak with good seasoning is tops. Steak doesn't need much gimmick if the seasoning or marinade is well done.
>>151801902
Good example. Ironic, because Texas BBQ is known for sweet sauce and smokey flavor.
>>
>>151801893
It seems like Hank is the only person in the entire show who is known to think propane is better than any other gas.

They did that B story where Luanne uses charcoal upon moving out of the Hill home, and then Peggy and Bobby both realize they prefer charcoal but have to hide it from Hank.

So basically out of the four people who have been living in the Hill residence, everyone prefers charcoal except Hank.
>>
>>151801808
Hardwood smoking is a lot better than charcoal cooking. I especially like mesquite. And charcoal cooking isn't a flavor I want all the time. The real selling point of propane is the convenience of it. You don't have to wait a long time for it to get up to and stay at a stable temperature.
>>
I remember 5 years ago I tried to get my father like propane so he could be more like Hank
>>
>>151801808
Propane is easier
>>
>>151801808
Cooking with propane is just easier overall. No set up, easy cleaning, instant temperature control, no added taste.
It's easy to fuck up with charcoal like using lighter fluid or not setting up a hot and cool zone.
But in the end, BTU is BTU and the skill is knowing what you are doing or trying to achieve is more important.

As long as the meat isn't terrible shit, you can get away with a lil butter, salt, and pepper, and a couple minutes on each side. People overcomplicate that shit because they want to feel like they're doing some manly grill magic with secret wisdom that makes their steaks better than other people's steaks.
>>
>>151802620
Yeah, but a good marinade can make a really cheap cut of beef super tender

It's just different. Despite being a good man, Hank's fatal flaw is an almost narcissistic loyalty. The only reason he loves propane is because Buck Strickland took him under his wing, which is the same reason he defends the man who lies, gambles, cheats, drinks, and actively ruins his own company.

It's cliche to say, but it really comes down to daddy issues and Cotton for really no reason treating Hank like a burden. So when anybody praises or includes him, he tends to put on blinders to their true nature.

Not to mention that general "Don't Mess With Texas" attitude that every region has, but is ridiculously exaggerated in Texas. He loves the Cowboys of course despite them being absolute dogshit since their last Super Bowl. But he also regards his high football championship as the single biggest game in Texas history.

Garlic, nigga.
>>
>>151802891
Did I say not to use garlic? I'm just saying that even with the most basic ingredients, steak can be good with minimal effort.
>>
>>151802891
>>151802963
Forget the steak, just eat the garlic! WAH HA HA!
>>
Smokers are better.
>>
>>151803019
Can confirm, I eat cloves by the fistful. Really good at keeping people from bugging me because my breath is awful and I'm farting 24/7.
>>
The nicest thing about a propane grill is just how easy they are to use. Though I just have a charcoal Weber these days, at which point you sort of have to learn heat control. I'm not that good at it, but it's also not super hard. But propane is like a gas range, you just turn it up and down.
And I've never lived in a house that has propane heating, and so I know nothing about that. I think that's more common in Texas and rural areas. I've always had all electric or natural gas/electric.

It's just a placebo effect, there's no real difference between propane and charcoal the only true difference is if the patties are premade or not and how long they're cooked

What would Hank do if you pissed on a propane tank in front of him?
>>
>>151805054
he'd probably demote you to the lowest rank of all tankwipe
>>
>>151801808
There is a difference between high quality and cheap charcoal, however propane is propane. So a high quality charcoal will yield better results than propane, but propane is going to yield better results than cheap charcoal. It really depends on the type of charcoal you buy.
>>
>>151805177
Doesn't this kind of get at the fact that the Hills are resolutely middle-class and so maybe their environment is not one in which "good-quality" charcoal exists? That shit can get expensive.
>>
>>151802799
Because the world is a cruel place
>>
charcoal masks low quality meat flavor
propane allows you to taste the meat
>>
>>151805202
Hank strives for quality in his grilling and cooking in every element he can. He joined a fucking collective just to get good steaks.
>>
>>151801808
good charcoal tastes better, but propane's not bad and better than cheap charcoal and easier to grill with
>>
>>151801808
Naked Hank
>>
>>151801808
I'd rather grill with propane any day of the week just because charcoal is a pain and it's rarely worth the additional effort when you just want to grill something up. However if a propane-grilled burger and a charcoal-grilled burger are placed in front of me, I'll take the charcoal-grilled one.

It really doesn't matter for like 95% of the shit you might cook.
It makes absolutely no difference in common grill foods like burgers and most cuts of steak. Chicken and pork do get a little more out of charcoal fuel but it's really not a big deal, you can still get that flavor with a additive like liquid smoke.

Hank is such a hollow person he based his entire life around the first job he ever got. Forever feeling indebted to a guy who runs the company into the ground, framed him for murder, and never gave him a promotion. Hank has absolutely zero hobbies and self worth other than his job. Stuck and never grew as a person to discover what else he could have liked. Even worse that it effected his psychology so deep that he cannot get hard without smelling propane.
>>
>>151801880
Not only that but it's a matter of skill. Most people start cooking too soon so everything gets burnt, and then you get boomers coping that you're meant to burn it a little bit.

I hated charcoal because whoever cooked with it always charred the burger where I don't taste the meat, I'm sure it's good when done right
>>
they both have their place. if you have access to a weber and you want to go all out on a weekend to grill burgers then you should use charcoal. if it's a weeknight in the summer and you just want to grill something for dinner, propane.
>>
>>151801808
Propane is used for convenience, not taste. If you actually want good barbecue you use good real charcoal. Hank is and has always been written as an ignorant idiot who can sometimes change but doesn't always.
>>
Can't use charcoal to heat a house
>>
For me it’s an air fryer with a shit tonne of butter. Most low effort low cost form of cooking, I don’t know why people bother with anything else really.

>>
>>151809584
Those are skills, not hobbies.
>>
>>151809704
NTA but those all can double as hobbies, guitar playing especially.
>>
>>151809713
Turning a skill into a hobby doesn't keep it from being a skill.
>>
Both are shite. Just cook vegan burgers in a conventional oven. It's healthy for you, and you won't taste nasty smoke or grease.
>>
>>151801808

Hank might as well be cooking in an oven

All of those things are done by Hank in his spare time because he enjoys them, hence hobbies. As this anon >>151809713 stated many hobbies are ALSO skills, whether they are done for personal enjoyment or not is the distinction. Furthermore, the fact that he is skilled at them is irrelevant. A person could have NO aptitude for guitar playing or fishing or building things, but still enjoy doing them.
>>
>>151809787
I think it's funny that Hank is skilled in multiple very useful things and flat out being good at the guitar but insists on working a dead end job because Hank has Daddy issues and imprinted onto Strickland
Hanks basically a guy who's holding himself back because he's super complacent with his life
