It's funny that in storyline Jason Todd is known as Batman's biggest mistake, when in reality he is the franchise's biggest mistake. You could have had him as a critique of Batman's entire philosophy and as an exploration of morality within the series, but post initial appearance they proceeded to completely defang him, made him not a villain, and now he's just floating around aimlessly doing nothing. Realistically he should have stayed dead, so Batman's biggest mistake would have been regret over having a dead kid on his hands, instead of it being recontextualized as he created this weird as fuck character that serves no purpose.
>>151809288>You could have had him as a critique of Batman's entire philosophyThat's exactly why they didn't.
>>151809288He could still be a darker batman that uses more harsher methods to get better results
>>151809310Honestly yeah it's realistically this, because if you had him go on a punisher like killing spree and murder the shit out of all of Batman's villains, the audience would think that's really good because all of Batman's rogue gallery is filled with irredeemable monsters that should have been killed years ago. Which is why they instantly nerfed that aspect of him and now he's just another member of the bloated bat family, which will never not feel fucking weird that he just forgave Batman
Arkham's take on the character is great because they still let the character be the man-child Robin who kills people. The problem is that DC's way of rehabilitating the character is to take away what makes him unique.
>>151809432See but you can avoid that problem because Jason should have never been redeemed. If you give him the moniker of being Batman's biggest mistake then he should have forever been a ghost from the past that haunts him repeatedly and being beyond fixing. Now the character serves no purpose narratively
>>151809457Morrison's deal was that he doesn't need to be redeemed. And it's one of the only comics, if not the only good comic take on the character.
>>151809288>>151809310>>151809401Every time DC tries to make a villain who "challenges Batman's morality", I cringe because due to Batman's main character's syndrome you know it won't be handled in any kind of satisfying manner that'd upset the status quo in any way or even present a "both sides have a point" argument.I would prefer if DC would stop going out of the way to shine light on how retarded Batman and his morality are. You can't salvage it. It makes Batman seem entirely inefficient when you have guys like Joker and Zsasz with hundreds if not thousands of victims and everybody knows it's a safeguard to keep his rogues gallery alive to keep the revenue running. His no-kill code is stupid and it's much better when you don't dwell on it.. You don't have to turn Batman into Punisher, just stop trying to out-edge Moore and stop bringing attention to the corporate safeguard masquerading as a deep and tragic character flaw.
>>151809288Jason should be Batman if he never believed in Redemption. Red Hood is the type of vigilante who would shoot at a kid trying to steal the wheels of the batmobile.
>>151809496No, Jason would be more likely to shoot violent criminals and scold little kids. He's the Hood (no pun intended), Robin after all. Along with Cass and Dick, they are the only Robins who know poverty.
>>151809482That's why I said that he should have stayed dead as a reminder that Batman isn't perfect, because the only way you could write Jason Todd/Red Hood and do the character justice would be to fundamentally change the entire narrative to fit him, which DC will never allow for their prized cash cow that is Batman. He is a great concept for a character that exists in a series where the main character can never change because we have toys to sell.
>>151809288Can they just make a simple story about him killing bad guys for fun? Is that really so hard? Like, put him somewhere else and give him new villains to kill. No Batman or other Bat characters, just him having fun with his life.
>>151809310>>151809482this is always so fucking dumb, when Superman and like 99% of all super heroes have the same no-kill-rule as Batman
>>151809562You can thank Alan Moore for shitting out the Killing Joke and pointing out this narrative flaw to the reader which would end up having to be addressed in every comic moving forward. All the other super heroes never get so criticized as this because there wasn't a smartass author that decided to make a story pointing it out
>>151809562I think what makes this problem glaringly obvious in Batman is the character of Joker and nothing else. Not only does he do ridiculously evil things like being a mass murderer for fun, rape, torture, mutilation etc, but unlike a Harvey Dent or Mr Freeze he is beyond redemption, he will break out endlessly and his only goal in life is to be a supervillain and create as much suffering as possible. Zsasz has this too but he was written way after this was a problem for writers and that you had already accepted that Batman is retarded. So Lex Luthor or Kingpin are assholes, but they don't go around shooting children in the face and raping women for fun like the Joker so it's easier to accept when they're just thrown in prison.
Just have him be punisher but in a new city. Now he wont clash with Batman unless you need him to and he won’t be part of batfamily bloat.
>>151809643>but they don't go around shooting children in the face and raping women for fun like the JokerLuther recently tried to destroy the entire Multi-Verse. He is a million times more evil and dangerous than Joker. Yet Supes would never ever kill him.
>>151809659>but why doesn’t he kill Gotham’s existing villains?Just to spite Batman. If he doesn’t want to kill his villains then the blood of the innocents is on his hands.
>>151809664That's cartoony
>>151809288>so Batman's biggest mistake would have been regret over having a dead kid on his handsMaybe in a world where DC as some integrity. But since Bruce act as a jerk toward Jason's memory as soon as his body hit the ground, Bruce's regrets are as meaningfull as the regrets a criminal feels when they get caught.>>151809496You're the average schizo DCfag.
What if The Joker was infected with the Crossed virus though?
>>151809580>you can blameStop being a retarded manchild and projecting on others. Less autistic readers than you realized the obvious flaws in Batman world by growing up and/or not seing the world or Batman through the lenses of a child. The retarded move was trying to move batman away from his kiddie pool AND appoints a bunch of fanboys and edgelords as the architects of that enterprise.
>>151810142You can't blame the readers for looking too much into things when the narrative itself brings it up, retard
>>151810295Some fanboys will point the blame at literally everything until they actually blame the writers for writing shit
>>151810106This. At the end of the day whatever they chose would have been shit because DC has no artistic integrity to have its characters actually go through any sort of change
