Is Lone Sloane good? It looks weird and crazy, but I don't know where to begin, can I just pick up any?
>>151809790It does look interesting
>>151809790Read by order of publication
>>151809790Not at all. Cool art though, but even that gets old fast.
>>151809790Like a lot of groundbreaking works it's a fucking slog the first time around. It doesn't help that it's in translation. If you like it, read it a second time and it'll be better. It's not bad but it's not the easiest read, you might find Valerian more digestible in the same kind of vein. The art's nice but you might like Arthur Ranson (whose art tends to be a little more accessible) or someone like that.
It is some wild ass shit it is.I read them out of order, myself, but apparently the plot is more cohesive if you, y'know, don't do that.Personally I think they're arguably better as artistic experiences than a strictly cohesive narrative, tied together by the deliciously vibrant and psychedelic artwork and grandiose pomposity of the (translated) narration than anything else. For instance, the Salomé arc is essentially disconnected from the entire rest of Lone Sloane, being a retelling of Salomé the Opera with Lone Slone as a framing device rather than a "Lone Sloane story."I'mma post a few Druillet images to give a sense of what's up. I cannot guarantee a complete absence of boobs because by GOD does he love to include boobs in crowd shots.
>>151809790>>151812323Delirius is particularly wild.
>>151809790>>151812336He really loves playing with color. The images are nice on screen, but I think the experience is enhanced by having the actual book in front of you and being able to move around the page with your own eyes.Doesn't hurt that some pages are drawn at odd angles, or spiral, or loop around so some of the text and images are perpendicular or upside-down. Having them as physical books I tink is the better approach.
>>151812384>>151809790Also, my mistake, it's not called Salomé, but Salammbo, and is based on the Carthage Mercenary Revolt, like the novel on which it is itself based.
>>151812438(I would post larger two-page spreads but they're all >4MB so I literally can't without resizing them)
>>151812384always wondered where Pat Mills got his inspiration from
>>151812266>Like a lot of groundbreaking works it's a fucking slog the first time aroundWhat?
>>151812447Do you know a reliable place to get scans/digitals? I found some scattered bits on newcomic and europeanclassic comics, but the latter is especially sketch lol
>>151813217bizarre mindset
>>151813217>>151813780a lot of books that are doing something that was new at the time aren't really polished readslike the other anon was saying it's not a great narrative experience, which is kind of a problem for a comic book, but the art is nice like reading an Alex Ross comic if he could do comic book art, not just mediocre fine art paintings
>>151809790I love Salammbo. I read the book and then the graphic novel and it was great.
