Imagine a story where Batman travels in the past, kills his parents' murderers before they kill the Waynes, then realizes that by killing them he has destroyed Batman. Which he is fine with, but that means that all the people he has saved over the years are now going to suffer and die. So he has to kill his own parents to preserve a future with a Batman. He tries but he can't bring himself to. So instead he shoots his kid self. This causes a time paradox and forces some time police or higher entity to intervene and repair the timeline, preventing Batman from even going back to the past. A self-contained filler issue.
