What am I supposed to feel when I watch this show? Like, what is the intention?

Because on a surface level, it seems like it's supposed to be making fun of hammy sitcom cliches by pairing kitsch "wholesome" dialogue with ugly and uncannny visuals to make the whole thing absurd.

But, the way it's written is so oddly... serene, I guess? Like, even though it's cheesy it feels oddly warm and genuine. Like, it gets actual emotions out of me. Like, yeah, the boys are weirdo meathead manchildren, but my heart genuinely warms up when they're being nice or talking about how much they love each other. There are moments and gags where I feel like if everything wasn't so intentionally fugly, it'd actually feel totally normal.

Am I supposed to be laughing "at" these characters? or "with" them? Or some kind of combination of both? Am I actually supposed to be having emotions when I watch this show? It gets really confusing.

I think the boys went through some kind of therapy and the dad snapping his fingers is basically a "knock it off" technique from it. It's like something you'd do with a trained pet, like a dog to tell it to behave. The boys were likely those aggressive jock types before something happened (concerning the mother being the obvious case) and they had to be "set straight" and that's how we got the current versions of Preston, Tristan, and Duncan.

this episode felt like Cappa reflecting on his craft of writing humor
he has declared in interviews that he felt, as a middle child himself, close to Tristan and his role as "the funny one" amongst the boys
he's also claimed he has no formal experience or knowledge of screenwriting, and all he's done so far has been mostly intuitive
we see the episode starting with Tristan struggling to make people laugh with his edgy and dark humor, while his classmates doing silly bland jokes get the most laughs
along the episode, Tristan tries his best to know all the rules and techniques of making comedy, but the only ones who really appreciate him are his brothers
In the end, he seems to realise that he can only get the major laughs he wishes for, if he gives in to the crowd, and makes his humor bland and accessible
he does that, and we see the original Tristan (his true self) stuck in the mirror
