Question to Iron Man fans if any are here, what's the exact origin of this line?
I have doubts Whedon came up with that quip because this specific interaction happened between Iron Man and Titanium Man in a 2008 movie tie-in videogame pretty much word for word, obviously predating his Avengers.

I highly doubt Whedon would reference/steal from a fairly shitty vidya few people have played to the point that most seem to believe it originated in 2012 MCU Avengers, so I assume it probably came from the comics or some other media featuring Stark.

It honestly is possible this was a reference to the game. The Winter Soldier based its action on the First Avenger game

Why do you fucking care? Why are you latching onto something so retarded?
>>
Alternatively someone involved could've heard the line and forget about it being from this

interestingly, i looked up the line and checked results from before the game's release date (2008) and there's no hits for the exact phrase. the only one is from some book about writing scripts or something, but it's referencing the mcu and the book itself seems to have come out in 2016. why does it show up if it came out in 2016 while i locked my results to before 2008? i dunno. but there's practically no history of the line "billionaire playboy genius" before 2008

i'm going to have to agree with >>151821180 and >>151821193 on this, Whedon may have somehow heard of the line and just liked it. it could also be a coincidence, but it does seem a little too specific to just be a coincidence

i did also check for results before 2009, which would include the game and movie. not too many new results pop up, but "billionaire playboy genius" does seem to be used a bit in descriptions for the 2008 movie, so maybe Whedon got the idea from reviews for the movie?

It's genius billionaire playboy philanthropist in The Avengers. Honestly thinking about it again it could've also been a coincidence though I'm still leaning more on it being a reference

ah, if that's the case, then it was probably just a coincidence

though, watching the game clip, the framing of it does feel very similar to the way the line plays out in The Avengers

>Titanium Man: Who do you think you are, Stark?
>Iron Man: Oh, I dunno, billionaire playboy genius?

>Captain America: Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?
>Iron Man: Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.

feels too close to just be a coincidence. Whedon might've heard about it, really liked it and wanted to use the line. as unlikely as it is, it's not impossible that he played the game or at least seen clips of it while researching for the script

It might've come from Whedon writing a conflict between Tony and Steve and thinking of iconic lines but who knows (aside from Whedon)
