In the first season he sends Simon back to the human city while he goes to seek out Huntress, probably because he wanted her to patch him up but it’s possible he doesn’t like visiting for whatever reason. Maybe Finn and Minerva had a falling out of sorts, probably because she wanted him safe and close and it started to chaff him.

Honestly, part of the issue is that the only good thing about this season is all the Finntress art and that can only carry the thread so far. Every thread is just the same 10 or so Finntress and HW pics interspersed with the usual finncel and troon screeching. There is just not that much to the season outside of a couple of Finntress scenes and any attempt at meaningful discussion is impossible outside of at most three people replying to each other.

The structure works because the yuxtaposition of the mundane world with the fantastical world both grips the audience with the familiarity of the mundane world we all know while introducing the excitement and wonder of the fantastical world. S1 follows this structure pretty closely with the sort of promise that I'm s2 the mundane world will transform into a fantastical world as Aaa doesn't have to hide anymore. But in s2 this doesn't happen for some reason, the mundane world stays mundane while a fantastical story occurs in parallel, but the main issue is that the show both commits to neither and also these parallel stories have almost nothing to do with each other. The sweet spot plot doesn't have anything to do with saving Finn so any time dedicated to one actively detracts to time dedicated to the other. And this is compounded by the fact that obviously the save Finn plot is much more compelling for so many obvious reasons: callback to AT and beloved characters, fantastical premise, HW being a good character, etc. Meanwhile, what does the Sweet Spot plot have? Only references to AT characters, we only care about Fionna, Cake, Hunter, Dj Flame etc because we know what characters they are, if the very same story was told with random characters, nobody would like it. The issue here is that the sweet spot plot needed to be the background plot that Fionna ultimately resolves by going on an adventure with HW to save Finn rather than these two plots occurring in parallel.

The whole deal of Finn being a pervert sort of works because all teenagers are perverts and Finn doesn't really have any support system to guide him through this stuff but the breakup was pretty abrupt.
