And in the end, when he does actually get his hands on it, it's powerful enough to corrupt him and make him give into rage but then he overpowers it and destroys the thing. If I remember right both Aang and the main baddie use the thing so it's more of a fair fight between two really strong opponents. Either way the thing that Aang goes after is kinda central to the whole plot of the movie. And i could be wrong on some of these details my memory is a bit hazy.
