>>151844560Spongebob's secondary goal in finding Neptune's crown is proving to others and somewhat to himself that he is capable of it and that he is a grown man, which is the inner conflict he developed since not getting the manager position. Every event in the journey serves for him to realise more and more that everyone else is right and he does act overly childish, but ultimately he was capable of recovering the crown so it doesn't matter. Now, this whole realization comes exclusively from Spongebob, he notices every label applied to him is accurate and he himself doesnt let this take from his success. Adding Squidward to the mix sullies this, because he is an outside observer to the Spongebob/Patrick dynamic, so instead of having Spongebob himself realise how stupid him and Patrick are, you'd have Squidward constantly saying it until it sinks or worse, have them blindly ignore Squidward and still do dumb stuff. In other words, Squidward changes the dynamic too much for the same emotional beats to work.

Thoughts on the schizo fan theory that this movie is about ancient aliens? I think there's a lot of similarities between it and the man who would be king that nobody talks about.
