What do you think about both series being references when it comes to making "western anime" (and sometimes even copying the drawing style and hiring the same animation studio) when some company announces that it will release an "anime" of some franchise? whether as a series or movie...Do you see it as a bad thing or doesn't matter, as long as the product is well written?
>>151877344first I wanted to fuck katara now I want to fuck Korra water girls ruined me
>>151877344Never understood it. Just call it a cartoon. We don't call Sin City or Scott Pilgrim manga despite both being influenced by the medium. What makes cartoons different. I get it's mostly a marketing thing but I find it really stupid. Teen Titans, The Boondocks, and Samurai Jack had some anime influence, but you don't see them calling themselves anime.
>>151877344>What do you think about both series being references when it comes to making "western anime"Nothing. There's no such thing, at least by what the west defines it as. "anime" are cartoons made by japs, for japs. That's it. But by jap standards there's no such thing by a different logic. For them, ALL animation is anime because that's simply their word for it. They don't use the word to distinguish. To them, it's just jap cartoons and everything else. "anime" is not a style. Never was and never will be despite the ignorant insisting otherwise.
>>151877344I mean, if other cartoons decide to take inspiration from Avatar/Korra purely from a visual/animation standpoint, I wouldn't be against it. Avatar looked great and had a fantastic art-style. Korra, even though it sucked overall, really upped the animation quality and had a shitload of phenomenal fights and visually stunning scenes.
>>151877513I think series like Teen Titans, The Boondocks, Voltron or the movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the wolf, if they are looking to be much more like anime... Especially in its aesthetics, while series like Samurai Jack only take certain elements but do not seek to resemble an anime.
>>151877344What? Are you asking about other western anime copying ATLA which is copying anime?
>>151877767Yeah
>>151877552But sometimes I don't understand why companies don't want to hire a Japanese animation studio to make a real anime, why do they sometimes just settle for copying the aesthetics of anime and that's it?
>>151877818They all suck and are morally corrupt but I think it's too late to fix
>>151877552Anime is animation and cartoon is a style of animeThis will always be so
>>151877344I think people focus too much on the art style. The thing that really makes Avatar stand out is a serialized storyline with a serious plot, character growth, and world building. Something common to anime, but rare in western cartoons.Any cartoon can benefit from these things regardless of art style. Although a more realistic art style helps to keep the tone serious.
This is unironically like asking about Palestine. America fucking sucks for sure but it's also the result of decades of dishonesty and injustice after ww2 so it can't be solved easily It's still a good thing for you to be able to face it, though
I find it annoying, and shallow. Not the subject exactly, but people calling Avatar an anime rip off or focusing on thatAtLA always felt like its own thing, inspired by multiple things, anime being just one of them. The anime it was inspired was very specific stuff like Princess Mononoke, something very mystical and nature focused. But no one talks about its inspiration from wuxia like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, even when the Chinese element is very prominent. Or Lord of the Rings. Even the anime art style was kept really reserved and made not to go too over the top outside of some chibi stuff. And I think anyone trying to retread Avatar knows its a cartoon and its own thing tooThe same is true for Teen Titans being made by someone who liked the original comics as much as he liked anime. The most anime looking cartoon is Boondocks and no one will mistake it for one.
Getting older is me realizing there's a lot of artificial barriers between both mediums, Japanese animation wouldn't exist without the rest and tons of the things we consider pure Americana were animated in Japan. It's fun to think about but once you pick up a pencil, it only restricts you. In fact it's good to watch both instead of denouncing one or the other. I know OP is asking about Avatar being used as an example of "western anime" but I don't know who does that. >>151878089Also this is also why Korra was obsessed with steampunk and shit from Bioshock. If AtLA is a product of the 2000's, Korra is of the late 00's/early 2010's, for better and for worse
I despise anime but I like the animation of both Avatar shows because even though they claim to be animes, they don’t do the stupid bullshit that anime shows do like giving everyone coloured hair, having same face everywhere, not having fluid animation during action scenes, overusing lense flares, holding shots for a million years, having someone internally or externally monologue every two seconds, giving the character’s big bug eyes, and giving every second character spiky hair. I personally don’t see the shows as anime at all, and honestly it’s insulting to animation as a medium to claim having characters with somewhat realistic proportions makes you an anime.
>>151878089>The most anime looking cartoon is Boondocks and no one will mistake it for one.See this is kinda the point I was making here >>151877990Art style isn't the important part.Boondocks feels so non-anime because it's structured like fucking Family Guy.
>>151878177doesn't watch or know about anime award
>>151877344It's a bad thing when they call it an anime because it's both a shallow and desperate attempt to borrow credibility and legitimacy as a "serious" medium, and because if every serious, narrative focused cartoon is called an "anime" it means the catastrophic damage to the industry the ghetto did will never be fixed. The borrowing aesthetic inspiration this was fine then, but is honestly unfortunately basically vital because pretty much all institutional knowledge of how to animate a mostly proportionate human or near human body and keep them mostly on model is pretty much lost in the west.
>>151877865>But sometimes I don't understand why companies don't want to hire a Japanese animation studio to make a real animeHiring a jap studio won't make it an "anime". As mentioned before, anime is cartoons made by japs for japs. If the writers and directors are american, then it's an american cartoon. Where something is animated is completely irrelevant. And if it were relevant, then by that logic the majority chunk of it all would be neither "cartoons" or "anime". It'd just be whatever the koreans call it because korea is where a the bulk of animation for the world is done.>>151877989>Anime is animation"Anime" is literally their word for cartoon. This has always been so.
>>151878177>because even though they claim to be animesThey don't and never have, and if there's a moment where they did because it's probably obscure as fuck cuz I don't remember it >and honestly it’s insulting to animation as a medium to claim having characters with somewhat realistic proportions makes you an anime.I agreeAnd if Avatar in general is all the shit they like about anime, this scene was a joke about all the things they don't(and making fun of the requests they got from toy companies)
>>151878177You realize cartoons has done most of these, right?
>>151878451>Anime" is literally their word for cartoonThat's what I said, I am following the superior culture's rules and will remind weebs that cartoons are anime
>>151878475Most cartoons are meant to be stupid fun
Americans are the ones that have been attacking Japan for making Anime and Manga for decadesThey are also the ones that have been attacking everyone for doing ''cultural appropriation'' or anything ''problematic''And they are the ones that have been allowing themselves to produce fake anime like it's nothingAnd they aren't even capable of discussing something like that seriously You should be able to understand how hypocritical it is at least or you guys aren't any better than the Chinese
>>151878382Pathetic cope award
>>151878382based, we need more of those guys on here instead of weebs who hate this medium
>>151878475Blatantly false.
>>151878517Almost like that's literally millions of different people with different opinions and actions and lives But remember, my favorite board of barely a few hundred people isn't one person
Is everyone in this thread ESL?
>>151878520>giving every second character spiky hair>not having fluid animation during action scenesyou're implying every anime is DBZ while simultaneously claiming that the thing that DBZ does well doesn't happen. you're a walking contradiction and a fucking mongoloid
>>151878553OP's question is kinda hard to answerPeople were already taking inspiration from anime before AtLA and Korra, and if anime is the only thing you got from Avatar then I don't think you ever actually "got" it. Avatar could've looked like the 90's/00's Hanna Barbera style and probably still succeed So the difference between anime and cartoons is easier to talk about If you're complaining about spelling and grammar mistakes, it's Christmas nigh and I've guzzled the 'nog for hours
>>151878627No it’s pretty fucking common to associate spiky hair with anime you stupid coping retard
