She's legitimately a brilliant magic user. But for a split second she saw something incredible, something godlike. Then she spiraled into madness trying to replicate it. One particular twist of her madness was that she convinced herself that her inability to replicate it was due to weakness on her part. Her stupid flesh mortal body is just too weak. So she started working out to get stronger, augmenting her workouts with the brilliant sigils she DOES know how to use, telling herself this is somehow helping her in a mission to once again see that single perfect unified magic theory symbol. It's almost certainly nonsense. She cracked. But she cracked in a way that she's spent years hacking her own body to make it as powerful as possible, pouring time, effort, blood, sweat, tears, and insane magic into making her body stronger.

She thought she was being clever with her "unique" way of heating water, but it burned her. Being a cleverbitch she tried to find a workaround, and one night she stumbled upon something beyond anything they taught at school. She's been trying to hold it in her head, but... she can't. She failed at her demonstration and nearly burned a kid's hand off. "Whoops, didn't get it quite right." Her room is covered in creepy glowing glyphs from her attempts to draw the master symbol, glyphs that made Tom go "they're not meant to do that." She's gone a little crazy trying to replicate the thing she saw. Possibly a lot crazy.

Every witch will have an extended backstory detailing how they ruined their life over some stupid misunderstanding which will all tie back to Jenny and Jack getting mad at Annie for something they did.

Drawing can definitely be tiring, but in this case the problem is that the thing she saw is just too complicated for her to process and remember correctly, it's beyond her capabilities, but she can't admit that to herself. So she blamed her stupid weak meatshell and has spent years chasing gains, deluding herself that if she turns her body into a Temple of Power she'll be able to draw The Face Of God.

The glyphs they're taught are old and well establish, so they're relatively easy to use. Noa is trying to work outside those boundaries, so it's resisting.
