My first question is how or why didnt they include Peg Petes ears in the orginal model sheet for the character. Clearly she was suppose to have ears like pistol under her hair. The points of her hair are suppose to be cat ears. Thats the whole point of her hair design. They're cats.

You get the feeling that orginally Peg was suppose to be more expressive with the points of her ear like hair. We see at least two episodes where it droops to express sadness. But this is never picked up by the other studios and is eventually phased out.

Peg's hair/ears eventually becomes a running gag which the other studios just refusing to draw anything indicating where her ears are or the shape. They would sometimes give her curlers or short hair and the ear rings are attached to nothing. Finally a Korean studio gets tired of it and just gives her human ears.

This leads into a second topic: there wasnt a solid plan for how anthros work in this series and it shows over time. There are almost no cat people in spoonerville and they are quickly phased out. In the first 30 episodes you see a few in background shots of the school. Then they just kind of vanish. By the end of the show, most background characters look like goofy. By extremely goofy movie, a lot of background characters stsrt to look like humans. They even start to give male characters human ears. By Quack Pack, all background characters are humans.

What exactly was going on with the Disney afternoon and anthro characters. We went from Ducktales that had an entire world of them to phasing out all anthros that were not the MCs

Is there any fanart with Peg's hair pulled back and her ears out like Pistol?

Still will never top Callie Briggs and her glasses for animators just not giving a shit.

I wonder if an early animator wanted peg and pistol to be expressive with their ears but it ended up being too expensive to animate between studios so they just dropped it. Like they wanted them to be more like real cats or a cat in a ghibli movie that flex their ears with their emotions and that was really time consuming so it was just never animated again.

Could be a skill issue too. Some episodes are very expressive while others are stiff and barely stay on model

Yep, beginning of the end hear. Half the characters in extremely goofy movie would have these shit human ears

Where was extremely animated? Was it korea or japan?

For whatever reason korea has never gave a shit about anthro characters in a serious context. Japan stopped caring after Osamu Tezuka died.

Wiki is saying US, Singapore and Australia. Ill bet you a dollar all the human lookijg background characters were farmed out to Singapore for cheap

>By Quack Pack, all background characters are humans.

Supposedly this was a deliberate choice. Co-producers Kevin Crosby Hopps and Toby Shelton turned to Donald Duck shorts for inspiration, claiming that Donald only interacted with humans in those shorts.

A dubious claim because im pretty sure Donald is mostly alone or with another disneh animal character in most shorts. You really have to cherry pick shorts to develop this idea that Donald lived in a world of mostly humans.

Mickey and Goofy dont appear in quack pack either, kind of sinking their claimed goal of basing it on the shorts.

Given how more human like the nephews are, and all the human characters, they probably just didnt want to make a Disney anthro cartoon but that was the available job to work on.

I dont know but the real crime was when a studio that wasnt the Australian team tried to give her a new costume and would try to slim down her build.

Shrinking Pegs ass is a crime

Supposedly that is how she was designed. The glasses some how connect to the base of the ear, not over, via some kind of car magic

That's why you need to make proper reference sheets for the characters, including details such as these. If it is important that her hair is supposed to hide her ears (which I do see as something that makes sense), you need to make it clear. If the ears are to be an important aspect of her exprerssions and mood, you gotta show and tell on the character reference sheet, and communicate it to the animation team(s).

Can you really blame the the animators for seeing something different if you leave it open to interpretation?

The model sheets run into the same problem the other studios had. There is no answer on the ears. They are not drawn on the xray image that shows her skull shape. And the instructions on the ear rings are to just anchor them to the head under those few little bits or hair.

It really makes you wonder if the character designer had much say in her model sheets. You can look at any frame of Peg and Pistol together and tell thst pistol is a little Peg much like PJ is literally a little Pete, implying that Peg has cat ears in her hair. The hair is even shaped like cat ears. Thats not a real hair cut any woman ever had. Its two large pointt cat ears.

Its obvious when looking at a frame from episode 1 and 2 and yet none of what I just said made it into the model sheets.

There just wasnt much or any world building around cat people in goof troop and they all but disappear by the end. They didnt even think to flesh out their ears or tails or anything. They're an afterthought.

It is kind of funny though imagining how those animators must have cursed the US, trying to figure out their intent from this single page

Those don't really look like human ears to me though but the bottom of a cat's.

Human characters in Disney cartoons tend to have two long lines, one along the inside edge leading up and a shorter one dipping down. More like a stylized six than the little v shape in this image.

Compare it to Bigfoot's ear in >>151881390 to see what I'm talking about; his ear is more like a human's.

I like when the character model does that, helps remind the artists that the head doesn't just stop when the hair does

Oh, that her ears are revealed!
