It's pretty well documented why it failed, and it has nothing to do with the film itself. It's because of a complete lack of any interest in marketing the movie, at all.
The movie was in production for 4 and half years, and over those years, the responsibility to manage its production traded hands several times until a total of 8 different people were considered executive producers at one point. And those producers didn't give a FUCK about the movie because they weren't the one's who greenlit it in the first place, it wasn't on their radar at all.
According to David Krischner, who directed the movie, Turner Picture's president Amy Pascal told him directly

If we put aside outside factors like lack of marketing, it was a movie about black people in old Hollywood. No one fucking cares. If it was about almost anything else it would have done better because writing, character designs and animation were good, so we can only blame story for people not recommending it to friends.
