Previous >>151872697This time will be 2015Last time, live was chaotic for Darin. His adoptive father Fred had a stroke which, though he survived, left him confined to a wheelchair and with broken speech. The Fairgoods were also visited by Kerry, Fred's estranged daughter. If all that wasn't enough, Bio-Dad Frankie returned to Westview with his pal Lenny, hoping to capitalize on Lisa's Story to make a reality show about reuniting with his son. All efforts were rebuffed and with the help of his mother's friends, Frankie was forced to leave emptyhanded. But all wasn't bad for Jessica was pregnant and eventually gave birth to her and Darin's child, a boy named Skyler. She also got back to working on her documentary about her father and learned, unsurprisingly, that John Darling was an arrogant jackass. But after meeting with her father's killer she got the idea to watch some old family videos and learned that he at least had a soft spot for her. Satisied, Jessica decided not to release her documentary and instead take up work as a wedding videographer.Holly, missing her son, took up comic collecting in order to complete Cory's Starbuck Jones collection. While for Les, Lisa's Story had been optioned for a TV movie titled Lust for Lisa and he was given the opportunity to write the first draft of the script and flown out to Hollywood. However all the changes to the story took a toll on him and enacting his kill fee he managed to shut the whole thing down. On the plus side, he struck up a friendship with actor Mason Jarr who was now free to take up the lead role in the Starbuck Jones film so Les invited him to come to Westview to look up the Winkerbeans' collection so he could study for the role. But things continued their downward trajectory for Cindy who was aged out of working for ABC and instead sent to a Cleveland affiliate thus ending her career as a national newscaster.
The Dick Tracy crossover. I'll post the non-Funky part first since essentially the Funky week follows from the end of the Dick Tracy week.
That finishes that up. There will be another crossover week this year with Crankshaft and I'll post that one as well.
Speaking of Crankshaft.
>le ebin 42 jokeI remember when this was like peak requisit internet humor everywhere in the the 2000s.'Member LUEshi?
In a world of Fighting Scapegoats and DUI Fighting Consensus Builders it's not at all unbelievable that his school would have been called the Fighting Chances.
The start of the Mason and Cindy relationship that will outlive even this strip. Seriously, nothing particularly bad ever happens to her compared to almost everyone else. The getting aged out thing is it and all that really did was lead to her hooking up with a movie star which is a fair bit higher than a guy who owns an Ohio pizza restaurant.
This is the point where the comics shit and other stuff begins to take over the strip.
Oh and these stupid self-insert fanfic flashbacks from Mopey and Dopey.
Seriously, while it's nice having stuff like Frenz/Sal art it's not really worth it considering the context around all the covers being mostly dull bullshit only Batiuk cares about by this point.
Batiukism Alert: Grandpa Google is the Funkyverse term for Google. No, I do not know why it's Grandpa Google and what's so elderly about Google. Maybe because Google has information and is thus wise, like a grandpa? Either way, much like how vending machines are vendos, Google is Grandpa Google. Also, somebody was upset about comments and criticism they received, huh?
This week: Cindy is unsure if she's going to accept the job that she accepted two weeks ago.
Another comic job that the great writer Pete Roberts has been fired from. Also, I get the point is to parody the Marvel/'90s bubble mindset but christ this was 20 years out of date by then. Although yet, 10 years prescient now that variants are the only things actually selling books anymore.
Gee, I wonder who...
That looks less like a blush and more like she's losing circulation to her brain.
You know, ever since she married him Cayla doesn't do anything. She's just kind of around and doesn't exist as a character in her own right, just someone to preen over Les every time he's feeling down which is all of the time.
Bump, missed a few threads due to Christmas. Jesus fuck, Funky is supposed to be what, mid 50s now? He looks more like mid 70s.
Pete once again fails upwards.
The debut of the Bedside Manorisms, in case you wanted to see boring old man Dinkle do his shtick with old people. This is also where we learn Funky's dad's name.
I have no clue who the non-Whaley Sue blonde is supposed to be. Just someone random, I guess. Also the only significantish Barry appearance after Act I.Ayway, have you remembered to buy Lisa's Story?
>>151900958>everything went better than expectedDinkold are you trying to sell me band candy again?
>>151900408>Dick Tracy comic from the Golden AgeI like the idea that Dick Tracy and his cast are basically unaging while Funky's cast keeps aging up
It's time for a twofer: another reunion AND another time travel story. This will take up the entire month's worth of strips.
>>151900921Well at least that's not unheard of given how some comics writers seem to fail upwards in the last two or so decades.
>>151901142Just say Tini Howard
>>151901174>young Lisa just standing thereWell this is gonna be awkward.
Thus ends another "it was all a dream... or was it!?" time travel story. It won't be the last of them either. This is never touched on again although you can say the time travel wiped their memories of it happening or something, who fucking knows?
Darin and Pete are going to spend the next few years out in Hollywood. It feels like he's around Pete more than he ever actually is around Jessica.
>>151901271I mean near the end of the run Summer wakes up in bed thinking her conversation with the time janny was a dream. That leads me to believe this was real and the present-day person presumes the time travelers were a dream.
First appearance of Bernie Silver, the requisite outcast geek of the next (and final) generation of Westview students.
First appearance of Maris Rogers as well, the next and last in the long line of shallow popular girls. She will be more irrelevant than even Mallory was as an indicator of just how largely unimportant this last group is.Funny how both Sadie (who Batiuk hated) and Rana (who's not white and blonde) aren't among that endless parade of popular girls though.
This leads into what I feel is one of the most bizarre series of strips in the whole run.
>Hey bitch. Remember that you will ALWAYS be second to me when it comes to Our Les, the world's most perfect and sensitive but cruelly shunned man. You can never compare. You will never love him as much as I do. He WILL call you by my name during sex. Make him even a tiny bit sad and I will fucking kill you. I can do it too. Ask he how I saved his life some time. The boundaries between the spiritual and physical worlds are nothing to me.>Anyway, Other Woman, even though you can never measure up to me, be is perfect wife... or else!
Mason being bi... polar will never come up again. It's just something casually tossed out to make him seem like he has more depth than he actually does.
>>151901358More argument for the "Les has memory issues" theoryLike couldn't he have looked at the roll call list?
Unlike most relationships in this series, it'll take awhile before Cory and Rocky are married. In fact, it won't be until the final year where it finally happens.
>>151900527Also getting pregnant in her late 60's
The Crankshaft crossover. Technically, this takes place either during Act II or some time during the timeskip so the Funky version is a flashback version of the story.
The first panel of that year ender strip may as well sum up the entire final 20 years of Funky Winkerbean.Anyway, that's another year down and it's back to black and whites. Next time will cover 2016. It'll be lots of Hollywood stuff as Mason works on the Starbuck Jones movie, Cindy feels jealous over his co-star, and everyone tracks down original Starbuck Jones actor Cliff Anger.Meanwhile in Westview, the current class graduates and Bull is forced into an early retirement when his odd behavior reveals that he's afflicted with a serious condition.
>>151901462I don't think it was ever acknowledged that Funky and Derek were part of the football team in high school. They would just show up in the background for those strip where Coach adresses the team
>>151902353Derek was actually recruited for the team and then started showing up as part of it. Funky was just wherever he needed to be for a strip to work in those early years.
>>151901779Maybe Cindy is just a time anamoly.
>>151901671What a fucking scumbag. The wrong Winkerbean got captured by terrorists.
>>151901737I don't care what he sold them for. He's a scumbag.
