Why was the pacing so bad?
>>
Nobody in the industry is trained to pace themselves for streaming era time frames. Before streaming, they all knew they had to fit their shit in 11 minute to 21 minute slots or get fucked. Nowadays, it's too free form and they don't know what the fuck to do.

Andy feet.

Because it was just the author's poorly veiled ryona fetish more than it was a show.
>>
>>151903896
she looks exactly like ensign mariner. right down to the red shirt. i swear, no one knows how to make original looking brownoids.

streaming shows would benefit greatly from a staggered release schedule of one new episode per week, to stop the 1% of turbo-autists from binging an entire season in one day and then spoiling it online for those of us who like pacing ourselves.

i know that shows are usually animated in one fell swoop, but you need to keep the hype alive for more than two weeks if you want to hope for consistent viewing and chance for renewal.

It was designed for streaming. Streaming ruins everything.
>>
I wonder how Japanese anime paces itself.
>>
>>151903896
I think they thought they were going to be a season anime with like fifty episode long seasons. Unfortunately for them that's not how cartoons are done. Cartoons are lucky if they get more than twenty episodes and they got only half of that but didn't adjust the pace accordingly.

But it came out weekly on Toonami before going on streaming? You're probably right that the pacing was weirdly planned partially because of streaming but it was given the one episode a week release which was ideal. Without being undercut from a stream dump.

I didn’t even know this shit aired on tv
>>
>>151907186
It wasn’t supposed to air on Toonami. It’s a victim of CN falling apart
>>
>>151907196
Do you watch Cartoon Network? Toonami? If not then you would have never seen the advertisement but they did advertise it a lot before it premiered and during it's run.

>>151907206
That is also true. Though it's tone and feel is more at home in the anime focused Toonami anyway. Just weird scheduling fuckery going on.
>>
>>151907186
It was originally supposed to air on CartoonNetwork and likely get dumped on HBOMax.
It wasn't an Adult Swim show until CN wanted to rebrand for a younger audience.

Yes. It was saved from the dump release which was a good thing but it looks like the rescheduling plans didn't happen early enough to give the crew the heads up to write the show accordingly. Though considering how long this shit takes odds are they'd have needed a year or more heads up to change anything.

bigger problem was it being wrestling when there's hardly any of it
>>
>>151903896
Director/creator was a poseur faggot who didn't actually understand wrestling, anime, pro combat sports, or any of the other things he claimed as inspiration for this show.
>>
It's weird how it was a battle tournament anime parody, but played 100% straight. Like the character tropes, flashback sequences, and majority of the dialogue being internal monologue.
It would've benefitted if the writing was funny or clever, but it wasn't either.
>>
>>151907276
I don't even think I'd call it played straight. Or if it was they didn't do it well. Like they had a poor balance of jokes and seriousness. Even from the first episode it was badly balanced. Like it didn't realize borrowing from gag anime and tournament anime at the same time is a careful balance. They either needed to lean more into the humor and make it full on joke or cut more of the jokes so as to not undermine the tone.
>>
>>151907221
The problem with airing next to real anime made it really stand out how garbage it was and its lack of any original ideas.
>>151907167
This is an issue with a lot of western projects. Completely untested titles and creators write their first season like it’s the first of 10, rather than being realistic and writing a one season story and building it up later if it’s gets renewed.

Too many creators think they are entitled to a renewal
>>
>>151907324
Eh, most of Toonami's lineup was shit at the time anyway so it wasn't really outclassed by much. If anything it was doing pretty well in the views at the time. About as well or better than most of the anime there at the time.
>>
>>151903896
Because instead of making the straightforward semi-serious "fight of the week with an overarching plot" series starring a young male protagonist who isn't either a retard or a weak fag or the like that the market desperately wanted and needed, they made a shitty almost purely comedic parody of the concept staring quirky brown girl no.58372.

It really is that fucking simple, they needed to do a sincere back to basics series with a now nearly extinct type of protagonist because people interested in that kind of show have been so badly burned by constant fagslop that they'll naturally reject anything with even the smallest warning signs they've come to associate with what burned them, and instead they just did a whacky gay parody of the concept with shit pacing that had no audience because anyone who would have liked that was just going to go watch one of the 40 other shows already doing that while also pandering to them.
>>
>>151907322
Yeah, you're right, it wasn't played straight. As evident with the poor pacing.
Maybe the battle tournament/training arc format just isn't suited for what was essentially a mini-series.
