Will Vinton was very influential in the realm of stop motion and helped popularize it a lot, the stop motion aspect was likely part of the raisins whole appeal. Before Will Vinton stop motion was relatively niche, only being known for being used for special effects in classic Hollywood films or some occasional mainstream animated stuff like Gumby and Rankin Bass specials. The claymation (the term which was coined by Vintons studio) in Vintons projects looked pretty great for the time and made previous stop motion stuff look janky in comparison.
I really love claymation, that is how.
>>151914782they’re fun
>>151914782No competition
>>151914782Hardees gave these things away in the kids meal for like...2 years.
>>151915074He was the first to actually make it look pretty good. Usually clay stop motion was incredibly wobbly and no one else could keep the models from warping badly while animating them. Vinton was also behind a lot of 80s advertising campaigns like Domino's Pizza Noid commercials KFC, Tang, and Play-Doh. As well as a lot of music videos.
>>151914782The economy was strong enough to support Batmania, Bartmania, Turtlemania, and Raisinmania all at once. I know because I was solidly lower middle class and had literally all of that shit.
>>151914782>How did these ugly fucks become so popular in the 80’sBecause animation and claymation was so new and novel they captured people's attention. If they came out today they might be popular on youtube but only for a moment.
>>151914782They cute, fuck you.We love the California Raisins.
>>151916271He also created the original M&Ms mascots, you can tell how the older commercials done by his studio look so expressive and full of life compared to the soulless modern ones.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_BS2V99YDkM
Today I learned that there was a belated final series of Hardee’s raisins that looked like actual shit. Someone told the sculptor to make them less “ethnic” I guess.
