Why are so many writers at Image unable to keep up a consistent release schedule of their comics?

Money problems. They dont sell that much, means: no money -> no work everyday on it.

This. Image doesn't pay you anything until your comic starts actually making money and they've recouped the money they've spent publishing your comic. It's why someone like Erik Larsen who made a gazillion dollars in the 90s can keep pumping out Savage Dragon but Joe Schmo only gets three issues published then the book disappears because he can't keep working for free
