Why did classic cartoons have such a boner for rambunctious identical nephews of the main character that constantly has them at odds?

Not classic, but I believe the last to do it was Heathcliff
>>
it's simply a funny dynamic

They wanted to do kid plots but didn't want to bother giving the kids any actual distinct personalities outside being bratty kids, probably borrowing from their own experiences.

God i fucking hate this webcomic so much

Generations ago, when people had lots of kids, it was common for adults to have a fuckton of nieces and nephews. Adults could relate to this dynamic more than they do now.

The men who made them had spent time with their extended families
>>
Well you need them to do the gag where they’re doing a three-part whistle-snore in sequence

What's the problem here?

Same reason Mickey Mouse's love interest has a near-identical design; made it easier on the animation teams back then when they weren't handling a variety of character sizes and proportions.

I seem to recall somebody saying that it was a way of having children characters without having to imply that the main characters had sex.

The weakening of the Production Code as time went by is why they faded away as a concept.

Fags hating.

Carl Barks is just that influential

looks like they're hating on a modern day retcon/explanation/reinterpretation of the nephews being, and I quote, "robot spies sent by the sea hag"
>>

The main reason it was nephews specifically is so that they could have kid-specific plotlines when they wanted to while not being bogged down with the kids always having to be around the main characters since they are their actual kids
So really the easy way to write them in and out when they want to (aka they are watching them that day)

I mean, it was a necessary retcon because it fixed a continuity error that broke the lore. Popeye is an only child, so how could he have nephews? Making them robots makes more sense. Not to mention the nephews are never canon to the comic strip.

It’s easier to believe that Pappy knocked up some WHORE and Popeye eventually recognized and did right by his nephews.

The generation that was making cartoons at the time grew up during the period where America had among the highest birth rates and lowest infant mortality rates in the entire world, meaning that they grew up with a fuckload of siblings and relatives and portrayed that in their cartoons. Before WWI it was common for people to have between 5 - 10 kids in the US which is part of how the popular expanded so fucking rapidly.

Characters could not have kids but could have nephews that they had custody of
>>
>>151958289
The Dionne Quintuplets were popular at the time too, although they were girls.
>>
>>151954437
It's always nephews instead of sons because if cartoon characters have children it implies that they've had sex, and if you so much as suggest that sex exists to the kiddies watching, their innocent little brains will immediately melt out of their ears and they'll grow up to become drug-addicted atheistic communist prostitutes.
