why aren't you laughing?
>>151959245
>>151959259Probably the best answer ever
>>151959245Why was this guy even elevated to the rank of superhero?I mean, what can he even do?Kill people and tell bad jokes?
>>151959245Not laughing because he sucks, he's the worst hero. He's the only one who discovers Veidt's plans and has the resources to stop him, but for some reason the idea of the squid is too much for him after his lifetime of raping and murdering and he cracks up and does nothing. There are a lot of stupid plot contrivances in Watchmen but Blake being too horrified by the concept of Veidt's plan to do anything is arguably the stupidest.
I still don't really know the deal with that character. He seemed more like he was just a psycho asshole rather than there actually being any theming.I thought the intention was that he was destructively nihilistic, but his actual actions were just 'being a shithead' rather than actually in line with any philosophy. So was that just the idea? That people who are pessimistic are innately murderous shitheads? Doesn't seem like a very good commentary if so.
>>151960774yep
>>151959245>when they are laughing
Why did they attend his funeral? Dude was a rapist and murderer
>>151961204They were all murderers more than likely.
>>151960774A lot of golden age and pulp capes are literally just dudes who wear gimmicky costumes and beat people up, or dudes who carry guns and kill people (or beat them up). He was basically that, honestly based on his name i suppose his gimmick was being a bit of a wisecracker like Spiderman or Heckler.
>>151959245Yknow what? Maybe i should reread the comic again but i kept wondering what Mothman actually does? How come Dollar Bill gets his cape Mothman gets to live and go schizo while wearing giant fucking wings, does he glide with them?
>>151961952Yeah he does, but what does Captain Metropolis do? He's the "leader" and strategist sure but like... there has to be more right?
>>151960774Rorschach and Dan could barely touch Veidt while working together, butat around middle age Ed beat Veidt in his prime, Veidt evened the score later but Ed was older and also had the fight shaken out of him from realizing where the world was heading.
>>151960774Most of the Watchmen don't have any real powers, excepting Manhattan. The only other one to do anything really superhuman was Veidt catching the bullet, which he wasn't sure he could do, and still knocked him on his ass and made him bleed
>>151960960He's a "happy" nihilist in the sense he felt everything from basic morals to active vigilantism to politics were a joke taken seriously, but he was wise enough on to navigate to his favor. He got in with the Minutemen and later the US military to get his kicks under the veil of public service, because in the end it's all made up horseshit to keep the cogs turning. The gag later is that while he was chief court jester while things neatly divided yet chaotic, governed by certain principles, once he'd got to know politicians enough and read Veidt's concepts of an international false flag he realized soon a world was coming that was unified and orderly, yet also bereft of real meaning. A world where his role and way of thinking would be obsolete over inhuman plans and puppets designed in offices and labs, all made up horseshit to keep the cogs turning again but this time the nihilism of the matter wasn't so funny, it was gut wrenching that there was nothing he could say or do about it.I doubt Moore had future sight to know, but the thing is it is prescient. Ask war vets and ex spies how volatile things felt and vital their roles seemed to maintain a sensible world by any means, often unthinkable to civilians, then ask them about how things have turned out on a societal, political or even personal level.
>>151960774>elevatedJust being made After 1936-1938 Superman and Because of Superman1936 is when the actual Word Super-Hero was invented by Siegel and Shuster >>151960774>I mean, what can he even do?>Kill people and tell bad jokes?Super-hero is NOT about having Super-powers, Dr. Occult or Hugo Danner or Killer Mike are NOT superheroesIt is also not about secret identity, Zorro is NOT a superhero neither is The Phantom (before 1938 at least)>>151962517>The only other one to do anything really superhuman was Veidt catching the bulletYeah dude, try survive Antarctica in a Fall coat, or climb tall skyscraper up and down with lift shoes. Or break toilet in half with a kick of your unaided by any real armor foot. Or survive an alley full of thugs with knives while last real fight you had was 10 years ago when you were in a much better shape either. Another useless video essay watcher instead of someone who actually engages with the superhero genre.

>>151962734Thats all difficult shit but its all physically possible. I never said the other watchmen weren't tough and resourceful, just that The Comedian's lack of any real super powers wasn't unique to him. Yes, it would be very tough to survive flying miles through an Anarctic snow storm on a little hover platform wearing a beater, a trench coat, and a mask. Most people couldn't do that. No one, absolutely no one, could catch a bullet
>>151960898>rapingHe raped only onceHe's supposed to be more lucid Peacemaker. He legit believes in US, but he had terrible bad impulses he couldn't control in heat of a moment. He probably was meant to represent not being "hypocritical" in Moores' intended dilemma between supporting Hiroshima and opposing the squid, so he recognized that the squid was horrible but ultimately "necessary"
