Dirk is even moreso his self-insert, a guy who asserts that pursuing detached irony to a maniacal degree does in fact unlock a whole new level of genuine sincerity completely unknown to normiedom. Hussie's whole shtick is pursuing irreverence and apathy to all narrative rules and norms to a monomaniacal degree that it ends up fundamentally destabilizing the very fabric of the narrative he himself has constructed. He's an author at war with the integrity of his own capacity as a storyteller. He puts himself in frequently embarrassing situations in the comic itself, and then has himself be murdered and usurped by the primary antagonist Lord English, a figure whose main defining trait is his perverse obsession with male superiority. Think about it: Hussie made the villain of the comic be a big green embodiment of the patriarchy.

If anything that's come out about the whole situation at What Pumpkin, the Kickstarter fiasco, and the beef with Gio and the Homestuck archive project, it seems like Hussie also really struggles with leadership, and this is no doubt due to his complete unwillingness to embody strength and confidence, cause to him that means he's being toxic and braggadocious.
