A lot of people always question why the characters are drawn with "white" features despite being analogous to East Asians but I think these characters phenotypically resemble Central Asian Turkic people. People like Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Turkmen, etc. These groups tend to have Asian physical features like hooded but with light colours and hair. I feel like a live action version with a cast from Central Asia would work the best if they were trying to capture the look of the characters in the cartoon.

Anon, they're cartoon characters, a level of perception and interpretation always falls on the audience because of visual abstraction. Take for example the character depicted here, Finn the Human. His eyes are simple dots, his nose is not visible, his mouth lacks defined lips, his hair, ears, hair and neck are obscured by his headwear, his limbs bend without any clearly defined joints and most of the time it looks like he only has three fingers on each hand, thumbs included. And yet hardly anyone has trouble accepting that this character is meant to be a human being, despite the obvious failings to depict any accuracy to human anatomy.

By comparison, saying some other cartoon characters, who are admittedly less stylised but still clearly do not look that much like real human beings anyway, look like the wrong type of human, seems very silly.

What I'm saying is that whenever a live action adaptation of an Asian/Asian coded property gets made, it always generates cancerous discussions about race. You get people saying they should be played by East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Koreans) and you get people saying they should be played by Caucasians. What I'm pointing out is that there are actually Eurasian people who genuinely resemble those characters. It's just an interesting discussion to have, I'm not out to start a war.

No one thinks of these Asians because their countries are internationally irrelevant and they're not common in the west.

I mean, ask a normal person about Kazakhstan and if you get a response it'll probably be about Borat.

Anime style. They aren't meant to look "white" or "asian" they're just meant to look appealing, which, in the end, means looking like cats.

Ancient Asian's civilization are actual Eurasian, Jomon proto-aryanic peoples. Before the mongoloid Asiatic races descendent upon them and raped them out of existence.

Because they aren't just East Asian, dummy. They literally use practically every part of the Asian continent for ethnic make up of the people of the fiction. That includes vaguely MENA and Steppe niggers as well as Siberian indigenous tribes jungle Asian.

I never thought most characters in ATLA looked white, but there's something changed a bit in TLOK's art style that they look more white there sometimes I guess. Eye colors don't count because they're not meant to be realistic.
As for anime - it depends on the art style (there is no single anime art style after all) but a lot of the time people think they look white due to the default human being effect.

They're Mukokesi, a type of character design that is aracial but mostly inspired by Asians finding western people attractive
