Man I'm glad I watched M9 in Japanese. Can't imagine suffering through muppet Nott
>>
>>151989465

But the characters in Vox Machina didn't grip me.
>>
>>151989421
Vox Machina is kind of generic, but its functional as what it is. M9 has some standout characters in it like Jester, but its all over the fucking place and feels like a total mess, and then having the goblin still voiced by her male player is just an objective mark against the show.

Make an argument for why Sam should voice Nott in the cartoon, but not have Matt Mercer voice literally every single NPC character they meet? After all, that's how it was in the campaign! Wait, thats not a good enough reason? You don't say!
>>
>>151989421
I like every Vox Machina member. I probably only like 2 or 3 from Mighty Nein.
>>
>>151989921

I genuinely don't understand hating Notts voice. It's not even a Venture Brothers thing like Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, Nott there's no comma the brave is a goblin.

To me in my mind, shouldn't have an attractive voice.
>>
>>151989975
The voice isn't fitting. It's just weird. And it comes from a post-cancer victim tired voice actor veteran. Not retiring doing forced falsetto is at best being stubborn.

But the exhausted voice SUITS Nott, because Nott IS a shot-to-hell individual hopelessly alcoholic. Nott is exhausted by simply existing.
>>

By that logic if you'd drag post workout gymbro into recording studio his voice would fit
>>
>>151989421
Both have issues with the broader story. The smaller scale encounters are much more interesting. Id rather see more stuff like the Wraiths encounter than anything with the dragons

To be honest Nott's voice is pretty much the defining reason I put Vox Machina over Mighty Nein.

>Vax
>Pike

>Jester

Meh Characters
>Keyleth
>Percy
>Fjord
>Molly
>Beau

Bad Characters
>Grog

Overall, I think I like more of the characters from Vox Machina and I prefer their team dynamic.
>>
>>151989421
The character dynamics of the group in Vox Machina aren't nearly as good as those of the Mighty Nein but the Mighty Nein as a group are a lot gayer. Vox feels like a pretty conventional adventuring party, Nein feels like a theater kid party so the relationships are good but there really is far too much Drama.
>>
>>151990909
That's weird, because apart from Nott and Caleb I honestly feel like the dynamics were better in Vox Machina
>>
>>151990920
Nott and Caleb is definitely the strongest dynamic, but I like the tooth achey sweetness of Jester and Fjord, then there is the antagonism between Fjord and Nott, the support between Jester and Molly, the initial suspicion between Caleb and Beau. This being in the context of randos who just slammed into each other, it makes sense it takes a while for the party dynamic to fully settle in.

Vox has Vax + Vex and Vex + Percy. Grog and Pike is alright but I don't really like their characters. Scanlan and Keyleth are just sort of there. The positive relationships just really aren't as sweet and wholesome, and the negative rivalries in the group kind of just aren't there.
>>
>>151989421
They're mixed bags.
But I think I can stomach M9 more.

So far only Vox Machina has petrification, making it better by default, though that may change.
>>
>>151994041
>>
>>151989421
I'd argue both are good for different reasons
if you want a high fantasy series that doesn't take itself too seriously, then Vox Machina is definitely the way to go
if you prefer a darker fantasy that takes itself more seriously and treats the cause and effect of such a setting "realistically" then Mighty Nein is a better fit, though it's tone will be hit or miss depending on how much you like gratuitous violence
>>
>>151989921
>Make an argument for why Sam should voice Nott
They want their voice actor friend to get paid money
>>
>>151994371

Who gets petrified? Hot chick?
>>
>>151989975
The voice being unfitting should have been part of the curse and they should have remarked on it instead of just pretending everything was normal.
Even uglying the goblin up a ton to make it seem like something is not quite right.

It displays the kind of loyalty you would expect from people like them, but let's all admit that it's off putting to say the least.
>>
>>151994035
I think they realized his story was eating up the all of the meat off of the bone so they basically neutered him as a character and passed around all of the good parts to everyone else.

Bad call. There's enough story potential for everyone and a marque player with a cool hook gives everyone else potential to lure viewers to the show.

Vox machina season one was much much better than this in my opinion at this point in the season. M9 has more interesting group dynamics and i like they don't all start as friends to the death and actually have to grown in to the characters they are supposed to be before that happens.
>>151989921
I actually really didn't like this at first but I grew used to it, is not that big deal for me, but I did got turned off by plenty of shows because VA before.

My mind just goes "that's how goblin women sound like because they are all gross little goblins" so making a huge remark on it would be weird and only bring more attention to it.

And the main reason, obviously. is that it was his character and he wanted to VA her and make money doing it also, and since he already did for so long they could just say it was an nod for the original fans of the podcast. But in the end for me is just they feeling bad from taking a character from a guy who works a VA and giving to someone else, even if it makes more sense.
>>

>>

>>
>>151995708

he's just assmad that a guy is voicing what would normally be his degenerate, alcoholic goblin waifu

Nott is a female goblin.

Yeah also feel it's a bit them not realizing a dnd campaign can sometimes need some umph to translate it. You must remember that most players are autistic so they do murder hobo shit or don't really do things "in character". But originally thought he was like how the elf guy is in nein. Percy was a side protagonist on a path of revenge but hey at least he got his arc. An still had the best hook of them all, pike's arc is cool too just well feels more vague. Just feel Percy was the bread and butter, also loved his va work
>>151995151

>>
>>151996207

Jester was raised by an agoraphobic mother, so she has very little concept of the reality of reality.

But she isn't insane. The Traveler actually is a real entity, embodying playful chaos.

She even learns the true identity of her father.

I'm liking Mighty Nein more than Vox Machina. M9 has the characters meet each other, while the VM characters already know each other. Mighty Nein feels more grounded and realistic. While Vox feels way too much like superhero DnD power fantasy with plot armor galore. It's like nothing bad can ever happen to the Vox Machina group because of plot armor. They can kill a dragon, they can go to hell and back and trick Satan, they can survive a pirate ship full of pirates with guns. M9 has more realistic things happening to the characters.

Mighty Nein has better relationships between the characters too. Vox feels way too much like Friends with the characters all sleeping with each other "for some reason.." Percy and Vex is the only romance I like. The others just feel thrown together.
>>
>>152001806

Plus I don't connect with the Vox. They don't feel like individuals I can relate to.

The M9 are troubled in ways one can easily grasp. Nott's drunk, Beau has trouble getting laid and lacks discipline, Caleb is in serious PTSD land, Fjord is hiding his courage issues, etc.
>>
I honestly thought Yasha was taller.
>>
>>152002319

Why should anyone feel bad for this fucker. He did it on his own. Noone had a gun pointed at his head, he started a fire with cold blood and only figured out that maybe it was evil after the fact. He did no research, he did not hesitate, he just blindly followed orders.
I don't know if evil mage villain is written any better in campaign but in the show he is as cunning as Adam West era Riddler.
Anyone falling for his schemes does so purely because the plot says so, not because it's convincing, making Caleb as someone who got manipulated by a dude who should be twirling his mustache with each dialogue, come off as incredibly stupid. Guess that at least makes sense for him to fall for the gay elf since both are naive children.

>>
>>
Embarrassed to admit I only got the "Nott the brave, no comma" because I left subtitles on and the translators clarified it by calling her "Notso Brave" in Spanish

Nein is better, I bounced off Vox and only started rewatching it after I ran out of Nein eps.

Both are products of the same team and it shows, Nein is far from perfect but there's a little more depth. Stupid prancing elf lala boy should've just blasted fucking Trent after he used the artifact in the siege, he showed in the last ep. that he's got plenty of magic mojo besides floating around, he could've blown up the king, Trent and their party and recovered the fucking artifact right there. End of story.

Also, the theme of the party seems to be everyone has a patron riding them, Fjord, the barbarian girl, carny demon and Jester all have some supernatural shit guiding them. I guess Caleb's is Trent in a way, and Nott might be the booze. Leaving butch Sokka as the only real independent player.

>Also, the theme of the party seems to be everyone has a patron riding them
Kinda. I'd say the theme is more about not letting that entity/event from your past control your future. This includes Beau with the cobalt soul and her strict upbringing that was hinted at in the season finale. And despite Fjord and the barbarian lady literally having patrons, I think those are more coping mechanisms to deal with their real problem (Fjord's rough childhood and Yasha losing her wife), sort of like how Nott's booze is just to cope with being turned into a goblin

I expect most Meh to swap into bad and some good to fall into meh by the end. Some Good may rise to best depending on how Critical Roll changes things.
Bailey's characters tend to lack strong plot hooks and end up turning themselves into an accessory for other characters, not bad but not inherently interesting.

Since it was pretty fun last time, give me YOUR dnd PC to show some creativity.

Female Shade (https://www.5esrd.com/database/creature/shade/) Paladin of Conquest (formerly human)
Alignment Lawful Evil

Backstory: Member of a defunct knightly Order. They crusaded across the realm gathering artifacts of their God/Patron. Each member, believing themselves to be most worthy of receiving the grace of their deity, turned on the others on the eve of the Ceremony/Ritual. The PC cut down many of her fellow knights, becoming the last one standing before finally succumbing to her wounds.
Centuries later, Archaeologists and Treasure hunters had raided their sanctum, stealing many of the artifacts within. It was this action that caused her to awaken as a Shade into a world entirely unlike the one of her past.

Character traits
>Missing memories
>Fanatic (to Oath and God)
>Nature as shade only revealed on near death (see: race)
>Sense of self (and thus continued existence) tied to "being the most worthy of her god and last of her order"
So why can she work with PCs?
>They're not of her order nor do they worship her god so they are not a "competitor"
What is her personality?
>She is the ideal knight on the surface, unfailingly maintaining propriety
>She is a vicious killer underneath, no tactic is beneath her unless it would conflict with her Oath.
>She is unaware that she is dead, she will refuse to acknowledge evidence that suggests this.
>She does not remember if she instigated the killings or simply threw herself into the slaughter, but she will kill any that claim to be successors or survivors of her order/faith, they are unworthy.
Possible Plot hooks
>Other shades/Resurrected/undead knights
>Successor orders or descendants of fellow knights
>Recovery of artifacts
>Unreliable memory (As shade: see race)
>Being truly resurrected (see: Shade race)
>Losing her faith (Conditional on RP)

Played a Rogue(Thief) with the Healer feat a few years... Good God, many years back now. The build was great. Thief Rogue is already really fun if your DM actually puts some effort into the environment design of encounters, since Cunning Action and Fast Hands really opens up your action economy, so you actually can spare a bonus action to do some goofy stuff or use a tool without wasting your turn. Using a healer's kit falls under Fast Hands and Healer buffs it to bring downed people back to 1 HP so you can act like a pocket Cleric on top of your normal Rogue shenanigans. It's a blast to play.
As for the character, she was a human and the idea was that she was an acolyte of Pelor (or whatever sun/healing god was appropriate for the setting) who worked in a church hospital for years and years, hoping that if she kept up the good work and prayed a lot, she'd get to be one of the REAL healers, hearing the voice of god and working miracles. But god's voice never came and she finally cracked when a fresh acolyte showed up and started shooting holy lights out of her hands on her first day.
So she left the church, figuring that if god wanted her somewhere, it wasn't there. Of course there's only so much demand for mundane healers when there's potion makers and miracle healers around, so she was channeled into being a back alley doctor for people who couldn't show their faces at a church, as well as frontline first aid for unappreciative adventurers. Along the way she picked up a drinking habit, insomnia, and a cynical attitude.
The fun part about playing her was that charging the other players for heals always provoked indignation, even I was operating at cost for the healer kit usage. It fed into her complex about being underappreciated wonderfully.

Alright.

CN male beastkin barbarian with animal instinct (wolf)

The Wolf King of the North. Former leader of a tribe of lycanthropes (primarily werewolves with some werebears mixed in), he believed he was chosen by the spirits to unite the disparate clans into one unified nation, a nation where moon-born were cherished and celebrated instead of hunted and reviled. And he actually started making some headway, using a mixture of proper diplomacy and raw strength to convince two other werewolf packs to join his tribe. However, this caught a lot of unwanted attention, and the would-be king's empire swiftly crumbled when a cabal of monster-hunting mages showed up and decimated the tribe before turning their sights onto my character and hurting him in the deepest way possible: using a dark ritual, they tore his wolf spirit from him, leaving him with only a fraction of his power. Now, he's on a quest to find the ones who killed his tribe, regaining his lost power along the way.

Mechanically it's just a hairy barbarian that takes as many class feat dips into the werewolf archetype as possible. In the day to day roleplay, he's a quiet man to most strangers since he doesn't have much to say, but if you get to know him and accept his belief and affection for lycanthropy (which he sees as a blessing instead of a curse, albeit one he doesn't want to share with the unwilling), he's a plenty fun guy to hang around with a good sense of humor and a fierce sense of loyalty - befriend him, and he'll fight to hell and back for you.
>>
>>152012528
Sounds pretty cool anon, wanted to let you know that before the thread possibly dies.
>>
Oh and I thought PF2e basically gutted the existence of classes.
>>
>>152012998
All I've ever heard of PF2e is that it doesn't actually fix any of the problems with Pathfinder while making the action system more awkward in the process.
>>
>>152013216
It makes the system more modular and approachable - classes still exist, but most customizability comes from feats, which there are an assload of. Class feats, ancestry feats, general feats, the list is endless. The three action system makes encounters a bit more streamlined, but it does take some getting used to if you're used to traditional combat. I personally enjoy PF2e, but if you're a TTRPG veteran it's probably a bit too simplistic.
Also the setting is getting increasingly stupid and the writers need to fucking stop.

Pretty much, yeah. Monster races are good, orcs and goblins are a respected culture now, every single female deity in the pantheon is a lesbian, every single female villain ends up turning good of their own accord, slavery and sexual assault doesn't exist anywhere (including in literal Hell), and most recently the god of war died because he didn't like the fact that wars kept happening, so he arranged his own assassination. Oh, and the demon lord of succubi also ascended into godhood, so there's been talk of establishing that succubi and incubi will all either go extinct or become paragons of good and not tempt mortals with sex anymore (though to be fair this part is not canon...yet).

Comparing season 1 of both seasons? Mighty Nein, no question. I actually liked how slow-paced it felt, and I came to care more about the team as a whole by the end of the season than I did about the Vox Machina cast and the end of theirs, where there were a few characters I liked a lot, but didn't really care about the rest. That being said, VM has held up pretty well in its following seasons, while I've heard that the 2nd campaign IRL really fell off at some point, so my opinions may change.

I think it's the apples and oranges that comes with Vox Machina being the party of a bunch of people playing a home game and not caring too much about where it went initially, only for it to grow into something more. So it lacks some of the polish and distinct dynamics that comes with being made under great scrutiny, but feels a bit more organic in reflection of a group of friends telling a story together.

Yes, clearly. Like Lodoss War long before any of these guys even knew what an RPG is, I'm just wondering if there's any official connection with the animated show. Weren't wizards of the coast trying to do something shady with the derivative IPs?

Clearly, they're D&D animated series, but the D&D trademark is conspicuously absent, unlike something like Fell's five which is overtly a D&D comic.

I guess it must be OK, Order of the Stick has been getting away with it f
or decades now...

>>152018221
Wizards doesn't actually own 90% of the stuff in Dungeons and Dragons.
And they can't trademark gameplay.

So anyone can just copy what they want from it and make their own game and media. The D&D name doesn't have to be on it at all.

Besides, the normies don't know any better and if they're smart they can create their own little DnD for dummies rip off they can learn in a bored afternoon and play with some scratch sheets of paper and couple of dice.

Yeah I mean if anything circa 4e D&D was "dying" because of the grognards, during 2e it was "dying" because of conservative satanic panic freaks. So its really just been saved and reinvigorated; the same antisocial weirdos who always dragged it down are upset by this.
>>
>>
>>152020132
People like Critical Role and Stranger Things is why D&D saw a resurgence.
Wizards of the Coast is strangling DnD by attempting to turn it into a solo AI thing that needs a 10k computer and microtransactions to even play it.

First group to make a simple normie friendly version of DND or roleplay with a pamphlet and some dice will save the industry.

>>152021441

>>152021892
>First group to make a simple normie friendly version of DND or roleplay with a pamphlet and some dice will save the industry.
It's called Shadowdark and sadly nobody plays it. 5e fanboys don't care about a 'streamlined' experience (despite that being their main argument against pathfinder) they just care about name recognition
>>
>>152022047
Name recognition makes it easier to find a table and provides a community of resources. Familiarity with the rules creates ease of play. And D&D has a huge swath of well known fantasy settings to choose from. I don't care for 5e but these things are definitely material factors in its favor
>>
>>152022082
>And D&D has a huge swath of well known fantasy settings to choose from.
How many DMs genuinely care? How many players? Because outside of mechanics, the actual in-house setting and lore doesn't really count for anything in 95% of tabletop campaigns unless they're specifically running a premade module, and even then the DM is going to skip over most of the backstory in favor of "that is a vampire, go kill". Even Critical Role made shit up with Exandria, the most a DM will ever reference from written lore are gods and meme characters like Drizzt or Elminster.
>>
>>152022273
I guess it's subjective. In my experience it's been useful for gathering players and organizing things like tone. Critical Role is a tv show you know? Its not real. Its not actual D&D. Granted my crusty ass still plays Icewind Dale so maybe I'm out of touch as well but from what I know, people do often enjoy knowing the setting going into things.

>>

>That's the crazy shit put into media to make you go
No that's the literal testimony from the kids involved in the mcmartin preschool slander

What do you mean you've done research into this but you somehow didn't know about these details?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMartin_preschool_trial

>Some of the accusations were described as "bizarre",[7] overlapping with accusations that mirrored the emerging satanic ritual abuse panic.[6][23] It was alleged that, in addition to having been sexually abused, the children saw witches fly, traveled in a hot-air balloon, and were taken through underground tunnels.[6] When shown a series of photographs by Danny Davis (the McMartins' lawyer), one child identified actor Chuck Norris as one of the abusers.[24]
>>
>>152022748
>>152022875
>Some of the abuse was alleged to have occurred in secret tunnels beneath the school.[25] Several excavations turned up evidence of old buildings on the site and other debris from before the school was built, but no evidence of any secret chambers or tunnels was found.[6] There were claims of orgies at car washes and airports, and of children being flushed down toilets to secret rooms where they would be abused, then cleaned up and presented back to their parents. Some child interviewees talked of a game called "naked movie star" and suggested they were forcibly photographed nude.[2][6][26] During trial testimony, some children stated that the "naked movie star" game was actually a rhyming taunt used to tease other children—"What you say is what you are, you're a naked movie star"—and had nothing to do with having naked pictures taken.[6]

>Judy Johnson, who made the initial allegations, made bizarre and impossible statements about Raymond Buckey, including that he could fly.[2]

And that's just McMartin, but it's a good cipher for the whole conspiracy.

You don't know what you're talking about and you either fell for bullshit or you somehow delight in ruining tabletop RPGs for everyone else; in either case suck my asshole Cocteau I'm the Demolition Man.

>>
>>152022623
No, you've got a point. I suppose there are some settings that are going to require a bit more focus on the premade lore than just letting the DM wing everything - Planescape comes to mind. Still, I maintain that most Forgotten Realms tabletop players and DMs don't care that much because of how broad the setting actually is - that is partly the point, since it lets enterprising young dungeon masters put whatever cool thing they want in the setting without much contradiction in lore. And for players, most lore drops relate only to how they can use the information in the campaign, since they themselves are helping to craft the world as they play (as opposed to playing a vidya, where a players influence on the world is limited).
Also I'm so glad there are still people who play the older RPGs, I fucking love Shadows of Amn/ToB but nowadays it's impossible to have a Baldur's Gate discussion because all anyone cares about is BG3 and Shadowheart's tits
