I thought they would say the far more reasonable explanation that romance just gets harder to write comedy for. Like it involves sentimentality. I mean Simpsons has plenty of episodes where they blend it well and have those endings or moments where they go for the feels while landing jokes but I dunno it would get harder imo since they can't ever end the show.

This needs to happen more often. Crew members on a hit show selling an original series concept of their own that does away with the limitations enforced on the former, of which The Simpsons has MANY. Even Matt Groening did it when he developed a new show that'd allow him to make sci-fi jokes and revolve around a cast of young adults getting into young adult mishaps.
