>>
>>152001479
Laurent Murkoph? Yeah probably
>>
Huh, that's interesting that Jael is Gefendur, especially considering that the Soud are supposed to be almost entirely Ssaelit.

>>152001479
>Either that Tree is either one of Murkoph's descendants or they're the same people because of how time works in the khert.

>>152001563

"...though lacking the high marks of her graduating class' superstars, one Nora Pris deserves mention for her controversial paper last year: "First Hand Observations of the Etalarche Hysteria: A Student's Field Notes and Suppositions." This paper caused some stir in the spellwright community with its suggestion that the people of Alderode may in fact be only superficially human; creatures of limited free will controlled primarily by a subsuming intelligence, like the agib of ancient Tain. It contended that their government - through its Dammakhert - renders them bereft of true agency. Miss Pris will pursue placement in Royal Engineering, promising to further explore these ideas in her professional work."

>from "The Standard's Quarterly Call-Out: Graduates to Watch!"

That's probably not right but it is an interesting theory
>>
>>152001609
Tree is the one doing the sensing so he isn't soud and Jaer is

>Is it true this plod has no mask?
Plodman: You, plod, show us your mask.
Duane: Indeed?
Plodman: Indeed it's time. All plods have masks aside but you.
Duane: I wear no mask.
Plodman: (Confused, aside to Crescian.) No mask? No mask!

Nora (Soulless, smug) : A plod without a pymaric is a scientific impossibility; it's at the back of its neck.

Some old asks on the Tumblr lead me to believe that Jaer is a Crescian with a Soud glamour. Ash has previously mentioned a "Jeremy" as being a Crescian working for the Tannery who's a friend of Tree's, Jeremy probably being an Aldish version of Jaer, a name that fits with the Crescian four letter naming scheme. And if a foreigner wanted to disguise themselves as Aldish, being Soud is the only caste they can pass as to Alds since a foreigner can't connect themselves to the Dammakhert. Also, he's Gefendur. Granted, Gefendur Soud have been said to exist, but they're very uncommon.

Alright man you can't tell me the tall red-haired big titty necromancer gf isn't pandering to the gooners here
>>
>>152001462
I thought considering this is a brand new start the necessary explanatory exposition was done pretty well. Longtime reader and you notice it but it's nicely integrated into the intro.
>>
>>152001702
It's an interesting perspective. I wonder if she still believes it. We knew Nora had no moral objection to torturing senet beasts earlier, but it's a fun touch here that she's advocated Duane does have a soul and thus 'real' feelings in the same manner as a human but is still 100% on torturing him. Hell even if she does still believe this theory, she would presumably still consider the Soud exempt.

So we knew she was like a totally amoral scientist already, but I like that you better see she's a genius here with her working outside normal theory on plods. Duane didn't fit the schema, she didn't just rationalise that away, she's starting to figure out what actually makes him work.
>>
>>152003081
Ashley thinks she's going to be a pretty divisive character at least
>Mikaila is a much more complex character than either of them, and she has a tendency to not do what you maybe want her to do. She does not sit around pining for her dead dad. She doesn’t even remember him that well. She is dismissive of her mom and grandma. She does not make sound romantic decisions. She does not respect authority very much and often in a way that’s less heckyeah! you’re so cool! and more omfg, you spoiled brat! She’s Lemuel’s daughter and that guilty mofo has let her run wild.
>>
>>152001884
Sounds like a solid guess anon.
>>
>>152003081
Repeating sub villain/rival. If/when Duane comes back she's gonna be intergal to his reconning to what his country does in it's conquests, especially since all of his flashbacks are INCREDIBLY biased when compared to how they actually conduct war.

"Port Mostorben rises again! In no small part thanks to the assistance of Risen Labor! Recycled Workers (Our Good City Council asks that citizens stop using the derogatory term "plods") have worked tirelessly these past weeks to undo the terrible damage left us by the great Silver Menace. "Last evening in the hours after gherkhanchi, Motadwe Duane Adelier and his child were viciously attacked just outside their ghers by vile Crescian terrorists. Ghers constables report both were slain. Duane Adelier was a Soud Rector, Lions Spellmaster, a veteran of the Foi-Hellick Affair, and a rare man of note among his caste. It was rumoured Shadwe Grandvin wished him elevated to the status of Composer, breaking a long drought of Ssaelit representation within the national spellcrafting cabal. As of dawn, Adelier's attackers remain at large, with both constables and paladins on the hunt."

"The remains of what were previously two Hethllot men were this morning found at the Emerson foreshore. Each appeared to have been dispatched with shortblades - the same suspected of use aboard the Plodman's vessel - leading constables to suspect they are related to last night's Crescian attack therein. The Hethllot pair remain severely mutilated by waterfolk and unidentifiable. Please see the Axecart Street Constabulary if you wish to attempt identification, and bring a small, waterproof sack if you would claim the bodies."

Doesn’t Duane basically say that he would join in on the mass rape “if called to do it” in his khert flashback with Lemuel? I assume that at the very least he is aware and understands why Alderode does it.
>>
>>152003454
Yeah he does but that was after a loooooooooong chunk of time and a bunch of repeated mind fucks, most of the book he inists he and his men fought with honor especially during the Aldish raid on the Twins Compound. He'll probably also have to reckon with his daughter being whole hog in the atrocities. Wouldn't be surprised if she was always a little monstrous but Duane being a doting dad happy to have a genius daughter to share being a Wizard with never saw the signs Wouldn't be surprised if Duane himself has a shitton of atrocities under his belt I have a feeling the honorable soldier act is just that an act to help him cope hell it's kinda been proven with the first war flashback when his brother burns all the POWs to death and he more or less said he'd do the same

>conspiracy crackhead
Honestly I can see the Red Cost reveal actually being pic related, the khert inherently wants things to be balanced so if you were twisting it to make the Dammakhert, it makes sense that to give lifespan you need to proportionally take it away from someone else. The number of children Coppers and Jets are allowed to have being limited makes total sense not just because they live longer and need more gibs, but also because the birth of each Copper/Jet needs to be balanced with the birth of several Plats/Silvers. Alderode's birth problems (which affects Plats the most) spooking the secret Copper cabal ruling the country makes total sense too.

Also helps that the caste lifespans are roughly proportional. If we assume the baseline khert-imposed human lifespan to be 80-100 years, Coppers are 4x, Plats are 1/4x, Jets are ~2x, Silvers are 1/2x.

I understand what you're getting at. For me I don't care about her body, but it's limiting to have her mind remain 10 or whatever forever. >If Mikaila has been fucking Tree it didn't happen last week. The fact Tree is still even breathing is just another black mark against Lemon
They came to an understanding, probably. It probably helps that Tree consistently comes off as bizarrely righteous despite being an assassin and kid murderer (though it's fucking weird he's been next to a kid getting murked, or almost, twice now but hasn't done the deed himself and seems to let some other asshole do it).

Regardless, the fact that he explicitly pushed Lemuel to examine the situation, and made it clear they'd both been played, probably led to a casual alliance of convenience between the two.
>>
>>152003961
It's important to remember that they're locked in an existential war with his homeland. One he's repeatedly championed despite his growing opposition to its current activity in Cresce. Duane's not just an enemy national, he's an enemy combatant and true believer. What's being done to him is pretty knarly, but it's probably soothed by the concept that he'd be gunning for them had the cards fallen different (And has, at time).

As >>152005835 points out, they likely don't know, but they're worn out and tired by this point anyway. Duane disappeared into the night last they saw and they probably decided to put his weirdness behind them but perhaps wish him well. Toma would object to his being unmade for SCIENCE, since he's a man of principle, and Elka would agree despite her otherwise stronger stance against the Queen because it's clear she's more of a true believer than Toma in The Cause of the nation and sacrificing for it. It's an interesting dynamic between the two. On the face of it, Toma is more the righteous nationalist, something of a contrast to Duane. But as we saw in their last scene, Toma easily avoids tougher questions about his nation since they prick his conscience too much, whereas Elka much more easily accepts the shit and works with it.
>>
>>152001213
I like how subtle this is. This page >>152001154 implies he's overstayed his welcome with the local thuggery, but the reveal here is that it's probably more like he refused an "offer" to take part in some scheme of the Tannery and is now being whacked for it.

I might be reading too much into it, but it's hard not to feel like this was a Sharte "on the edge." Sailing off to a new market in Alderode to make his own way. To try and escape the criminal grip of the ruling families of Sharte, bringing his kid along with him. Instead he got wrapped up in some other country's criminal underworld and killed anyway.

Life's tough for a shartesanian looking to truly make good.

Not only is Rachshame the North Korea nation, they think Pymary is some mondo sin. So they're spending their time doing real science. I believe this was mentioned in context with an obvious future problem for the setting, which was the limited stock of First Materials for Pymarics eventually getting so low that the teching up of our world becomes more apparent. And that this would put the violently xenophobic country of Rachshane suddenly in a very favorable geopolitical "security" position when that happened.

But that's far beyond the scope of our story. What's important here is they certainly would not have a world class Necromancer to send off like this, even if they did send people off like this.

I like how casually "brutal" this page is. The physical symbolism of humans rendered into carcasses and machinery. No wonder the Humanist Ssael react so strongly to it. Obviously its hella convenient, but I'm somewhat surprised it's so accepted even with the Gefendur. People treat human life so casually, but it's pretty much always some kind of big sin to treat a corpse wrongly. Of course, people still do it anyway and every culture has its own weird practices. But the nature of plods feels like it should unsettle the average citizen of this world more than it does.

Either the rebalancing went through and this is a sign of it, or the Gefendur finally got it pushed through in exchange for not doing rebalancing. Both would be bad, even if the former's obviously more immediately worrisome, because even in the latter it implies a change to the relationship with the Vits Council, where now the Gefendur know they can push things through by threatening to up end the Council's traditional practices.

I'm not justifying it, anon, I'm explaining it. People are too used to the, for lack of a better world "anime third path-ism" where the cool guys on all sides form up and be friends. In reality, soldiers from opposite sides can become good friends and then go back to murdering each other cause that's how it works.

Toma, of the two, is the most likely to cause a stink, but even then he's not likely to go one man army and forsake his country to save Duane if all else fails.

>I'm sure you've considered the black tongues
I wonder just how much Bastion published of his work before, and after, Duane. He seems enough of a weirdo to not be contributing too much in the kind of "black market scientific publishing" the Black Tongues at large do. But it's also strange to think his life long goal of overcoming death didn't result in SOME sort of thing getting circulated in the Black Tongue circles. Which is where a lot of advancements come from, even for Cresce. Had he "published" anything, you'd think it would've made some waves enough for Nora to have found it by now, given how much she's dug into Duane's past already.
>>

>But the nature of plods feels like it should unsettle the average citizen of this world more than it does.
Geffies accept their souls will be reincarnated into a new body. Therefore it's not a leap to think of the body as a meat machine that they will shed in time to hop into another, and if no one (important) is using the discarded meat machine, why not allow someone else to use it?
>>
>>152006094
Lots of real life cultures believe in reincarnation, and still treat corpses with some reverence. Hell, in pretty much every culture corpses were considered so unclean (and, to be fair, there were medical dangers in handling them) that in several entire underclass would end up forming that was considered Spiritually Impure just to have people who could handle the bodies "properly" even though just handling them was considered something foul enough to fuck up your immortal soul. From Japan to the Middle East, just touching corpses as part of your job ended up becoming something your decedents TODAY can be pushed around for.

Now consider what having dead bodies around doing day to day labor in a town or city would do with that cosmology.

I'm not personally cinema sins-ing this, to be clear. It's just something that stuck in my mind when reading this prolog that hadn't really occurred to me before. Because, frankly, zombie robots is such a sickass idea I also did some writing on a world wherein that was the gimmick. It's a naturally compelling idea for fantasy and one the modern mind is more capable of considering plausible. But it's also something that is deeply at odds with how humans traditionally consider dead bodies, so I wanted to bring it up.
>>

The first part can be read as complete and self-contained, in the sense that characters get their arcs complete and major plot points get wrapped up. But it still has a ton of cliffhangers and plot threads waiting to be unraveled in part two.

And it’ll probably take you a while to get through it all.

But it also took about fifteen years to complete, so you’ll have to wait another ten at least before you can read the second part all in one go.

>which has now also definitely happened
>alds? there's some shit up with them
>here's some basic Saellit philosophy

It's not that far at odds if serious money can be made.
The (supposed) remains of saints, the brain of Einstein, the dong of Rasputin. If there's value in a corpse people can be grizzly and greedy, and zombie labor is the foundation of a happy communist society.
>>
>>152005103
I read a bunch of captivity stories from the American frontier days, and one thing that was observed was that a lot of children taken before the age of 8 pretty much forgot their past lives by the time they were adults. They generally didn’t remember their English names, didn’t remember their parents’ names or language, and were just generally fuzzy on the details.

So I certainly believe that Mikaila is more Lem than Duane at this point. Lemuel has been there for her most formative years and entry into young womanhood. Mikaila of course knows Duane is her biological father, but as far as she’s concerned, Lemuel is her actual “papa” and she probably barely remembers Duane. She may recall a few flashes here and there, some reinforced by her mother and uncle too, but I don’t think they’d be all that strong.
>>
>>152006165
>it's also something that is deeply at odds with how humans traditionally consider dead bodies
We've encountered plenty of geffies who are disturbed by plods and consider them dirty and dangerous, true, but pymary has removed a lot of the dirty work around corpses. Plods are very clean, dehumanized, and orderly if they aren't eating people. The people handling corpses in Kasslyne aren't shunned; they're making bank.

He thought the Duane experiment was a total failure until some recent time when the scheme to deliver him into custody started. Can't imagine Bastion of all people writing publicly about how badly he fucked up.

His copy of the Songs of Ssael, his lion pymeric he's used to entertain children, a copy of a newspaper from his time in Sharteshane, a chewed map (the one Sette didn't use at the start of their adventure?), his notebooks, Sette's stolen hat, lots of tins of fish for Sette. I'm not quite sure what the picture of the stick is?

It's all so wholesome, and it being spilled out on Erm's desk is a violation.

>>152006165
There are cultures where corpses are treated differently. Check out the Toraja of Indonesia.

Granted, yes, they are the exception. But remember also that the Fore of Papua New Guinea practice cannibalism as a funerary practice, and considering cannibalism is accepted practice among the Geffendur…

I honestly do just buy that they’re more comfortable with corpses, especially since they can easily clean and disinfect them so they don’t cause disease (which was done to the last leader of the Black Tongues). And human bone is used for prosthetic pymarics.

It just seems a reasonably different world to me.
>>
>>152006353
>as far as she’s concerned, Lemuel is her actual “papa” and she probably barely remembers Duane
I think you're right. With Lemon Miki's having the best time of her life, she gets to play war and enter the military, she gets to throw of the restraints of her sex, she's the Golden Delight, and she's made hundreds of more exciting memories with Lemon compared to her hundreds of mundane memories with Duane holding her hand or teaching her a little pymary sometimes. Duane has been overshadowed completely because under Papa Lem Miki's growth and personality has grown exponentially.
>>
>>152006379
It might be an actual twig wrapped in paper. Is it the last sprig of the wandering root?
>>
>>152006367
I mean, but she didn’t totally forget him though? She knows who he is, has a few fuzzy memories, and certainly remembers the night he died. But as far as she’s concerned, he’s dead and gone, and simply not relevant to her life anymore.

I know that’s not a common attitude in our society, but part of what’s happened here is that Mikaila’s father was explicitly replaced by Lemuel, in terms of his place in her life and society. There was no space for her to develop her identity as a daughter without a father and a widowed mother; the void was just instantly filled, and her society clearly expected her to just accept it, which she did.

That doesn’t happen in our society anymore, at least not normally. Children are given time and space to grieve. Widows and widowers are expected to take time to grieve. Neither are expected to suddenly be handed over to the father/husband’s brother and accept him as a de-facto replacement.

She hasn’t told us if this means Sette is effectively immortal or what, it’s one of those things where she winks at the reader and says maybe we’ll find out, but she has been pretty clear that because Settes were designed to die at twelve, a Sette simply will not develop past twelve.

I more meant the mundane details he would've had to work out before even getting something like his little phylactery device ready.

We know it involves the Weeping Plague as a medium and Bastion's actual work is mostly tied up with that. One wonders if he disseminated any work about how the Weeping Plague affects souls or death. There's also any work he did involving the Tacit Caster port (something that IS mentioned by one of the researchers here and that Bastion already admitted was the bait that drew him into the Duane assassination affair.

Stuff like that is what I meant. Unsounded is the kind of story that has events like this happen. The Black Tongues come off as seedy black magic sorcerors (and they are), but the truth is they're also mundane magic scientists, releasing information on their research for wider use. It's the kind of story where a lot of work is involved leading up to something like Duane's zombification, so my mind wondered if any of it left a trail to Bastion, even under a pseudonym.
>>
>>152006411
I'm more focused on the mundanification of the corpses and how much their use would involve being around normal spaces all the time.

It's one thing to eat people. It's one thing to do weird shit to the bodies. But what I'm concerned with is that these all still involve some sort of "reverence" or "sacredness." Consuming people still tends to carry an aspect of "doing this gives me power" or that there IS some power there. But usually one is not treating the corpse as some interchangeable beast of burden. That industrialization of the human form has always tended to creep people out.

Again, not saying this is some big problem. Just that it's something that would've had to be overcome in the wider populace for this to happen.
>>
>>152008478
Will keeps getting the shit end of the stick, as usual. Something about Silvers.
>>
>>152010470
It's probably just something that came about as a consequence of pymary. IRL corpses have much less potential for practical use, but they've been used, mostly as bioweapons.
>>
What's the main source of plods, anyway? Is there some kind of pre-mortem contract or are they just repurposing enemy soldiers and corpses that aren't important enough to be missed?
>>
>>152007185

Useful to the Queen specifically. And I'm sure her apparent lack of personal ethics plays a part in her utility. She has demonstrated considerable skill so far, though she seems less singularly brilliant herself than someone who knows how to team-build and how to elaborate/expand upon foundational work. Frankly, we've seen very little of what she's done that doesn't get an asterisk.

Her principle work with water women was a failure, and only tangentially useful, and only useful in that way due to the unethical experiments provoking water women.

She did successfully copy Vienne Quigley's work, but that's not exactly impressive, she had all the documentation, she just copied it and put guns on it.

The cannon hidden in Yerta worked, but that was just a gun, the only novel thing about it seems to have been blasphemously hiding it in a statue of the goddess.

And she's managing to study Duane without ending up in his stomach, which shows that she can't be a complete idiot, since we've seen what happens when complete idiots try to fence him.

Even whatever info you could get from his khert jaunts, if you believed him, and if he told you about them in the first place, is colored by the problem of him not wanting to cooperate at all. It's worth playing if you can bear with what may now seem like tedious mechanics (such as the weapon affinity and crafting system). I think it is Matsuno's most interesting story. The dialogue is off the chain.

This is Father Duane. He is a minor boss you fight in the game. He is a warrior-mage-cleric guy for a fanatical order of templars called the Crimson Blades. Now his brother, Father Grissom, is the same. You encounter them both in a cursed city known as Lea Monde. The dead don't rest in Lea Monde, and anyone killed there wanders as a lost soul, usually until they find a corpse to inhabit.

Grissom dies too but against all odds, the dead body his soul finds to inhabit is his own. He possesses his own corpse and at the conclusion of the game finds he cannot control himself and begins to attack his own allies against his will.

It seems obvious to me in story and in appearance Grissom and Duane in VS formed part of the seed for Ashley's character Duane Adelier.

I think it’s interesting to compare the treatment of plods to the treatment of twins, who the gefendur do kill and eat. There’s something about them being twins, a very unique thing in Kasslyne, that makes their bodies/flesh differently sacred. I feel like there would be a riot if a twin got turned into a plod.

But then it’s also interesting to compare how gefendur treat corpses normally- we saw Quigley’s funeral- he’s dressed in a shroud and the casket is ‘open’. In the q&a Ashley says they let the bodies rot and decay into the earth and often reuse the same space for multiple burials (if I am remembering correctly)

Eventually there’s no grave to go to for most people. Your body isn’t entombed, it fades away and the idea of it still being “there” isn’t really a thing. That sort of attitude meshes with plods for me- they are just another way a corpse can decay/be used up.
>>
>>152013868

Cool breakdown- Ashley’s mentioned this connection on the q&a blog. I think she roleplayed as father Duane with a friend and, to do it well, had to build out the character and it became our Duane
>>
>>152013868
We should be friends, Anon.
>>
>>152013921
There are some other aspects, like the Crimson Blades and their leader seem like they were probably the seed of what became the Sharte Gefendur paladins in her Sharteshane RP. There's a kind of, uh, cursed redeemer ultimately in the game's story that I wonder if it fed into any of the Ssaelit theology in Unsounded. The main character is tormented by the memory of a lost wife and child, but not all is as it seems there. There's an evil(?) shirtless twink with a fucked up noble backstory who I would say definitely is NOT Bastion but y'know, maybe there was a little bit of aesthetics bleeding over there.

This is not to say I think Ashley ripped anything off or solely took inspo from VS. It's just really interesting to see what has become an at best cult classic JRPG influence something completely different in another medium. I think Unsounded's author was also pretty into LoK and there are some obvious commonalities there in a tortured undeath and brother against brother, and obv she makes no secret of her love for Herman Melville and you can see that in Unsounded too with at minimum its terrifying and profane seas.

>they let the bodies rot and decay into the earth and often reuse the same space for multiple burials
This was and is done in real life, mind you, especially in places where space is at a premium. You keep the grave for a while, then later cremate what's left or move the bones to an ossuary.

I've been to an ossuary once, for the victims of one of the worst massacres of the Rwandan genocide. It's fucking eerie, just shelves upon shelves of bones. They even sorted them by bone types - hips here, legs there, etc...
>>
>>152014345
It's interesting how a lot of cultures feel the need to keep these bones around. I'm not sure what the point is other than superstition.
>>
>>152014474
Well, in that case it was literally a genocide memorial, and for a fairly recent one at that (1994).

In general though, ossuaries are usually parts of churches and temples, and it definitely adds a lot of oomph to the atmosphere. Even if you don't think it's a factor in the afterlife, even if it's just an anonymous pile of bones, there's a lot of weight to the idea that your bones will be laid to rest with the bones of your ancestors. It's sentimentality, and for the churches themselves, it's one more thing to keep people loyal to them.

>>152017047
Well seems like the primordial soup was worse, just khert is imperfect. Think she'll do inverse, notice sette has fundamental perfect reincarnation just flawed because then humans considered her a boon to be tortured and eaten to be one with their gods.

So think sette will somehow use the flawed code of her existence and the imperfect khert code. To make basically a perfect reincarnation cycle, instead of dying and becoming just fragments of your bad and good memories. You'll die and be reincarnated as someone else, maybe this will be her final gift to duane he finally dies and gets to reincarnate in the new khert.

I mean think about the name of series "unsounded" she will sounded it. and fix what her "true" parents fucked up. But remember before the khert was just a fucked up fog

OK anons give me a live-or-die prediction on all of the characters we got this chapter. I'm betting Nora lives but most of the scientists introduced here die. I'm betting Jaer eventually dies, but Tree is gonna survive the whole thing.
>>
>>152022386
Nora lives, Ashley likes her.

Jaer is kinda young Lem lite, so I'm not feeling much staying power, he might turn out more interesting if he's a secret crescian or w/e as has been mentioned.

Murk gotta be murked so we'll see how that goes, but he's obvs. gonna play a big role for a good while.
>>
>>152022386
Nora won't die. Like I already said, she's like a turd that won't flush. She's already survived a few situations where most people around her died. At least Quigley punched her right in her stupid face.

I doubt anyone is going to die here at all. Either Sette is going to bust Duane out or the Queen is going to somehow convince him to go on a quest. Perhaps using Lemon as an "incentive". We see in the prologue she wants a demonstration of him after all.

None of these are good, it's just a sliding scale from 'the death of thousands to millions of people' to 'humanity's existence itself is threatened'. Murkoph, Even with his return to sanity Ashley confirmed he still going to be a serial killer, no clue if that is on Bird's order, being a zombie, or his own natural impulses. But he is only one man
Sonorie, Alds really suck her her solution seems to be "The Final Solution"
Rukh, Doesn't understand humanity and would instantly go full tyrant and not even realize what he is doing wrong
>>
I mean I guess technically if 'winning' means the character's ambitions are fulfilled and none of the other candidates' ambitions are, Murkoph winning is the least harmful because yeah he would rape and murder a bunch of people but even if it he did it for a thousand years it's still going to less dead than an Aldish genocide or Ruckmearkha going Caligula.
>>
>>152024113
is this meant to be like if they won? if so

>Khette wins- best ending cause she's best daughter and just needs a hug and maybe like a jacket for the flayed side. Also she mostly accepted her lost and trauma again, so she's basically neutered

>Sonorie wins-she's doing her best for her people but she's very underhanded and low down. She's much more status quo and more the "evil you know"

>Lemon wins-odds are low right now, but nothing wrong with betting on a old horse. He definitely seems to have some plan and machinations but honestly feels a bit to childish and petty to be anything more than ending the war and slight changes to his country

>Murkoph wins-too much of a wildcard to know what his true goals and nature is, if he is who some theorize maybe he will try and fix things but we don't know. Plus how he treated khette odds are he's not the friendliest

>Tittybird wins- She seems just like a old soul or a aged wised mother, she thinks she knows best and has very little care for most but her kin and her own schemes. Even when she's loved and worshipped she will abandon anyone even her children. So probably the worst plus we don't know her true goal other than being free maybe to play god.

>Rukh wins- definitely worst but probably tied with tittybird as she too is just a old beast, he basically just seems to want to live to continue to feast on different aspects of humanity and have a sadistic feast. He seems to care for no one and nothing, at best he seems a little interested in controlling the khert or learning more about it but probably just to stay at the top. He really has no true win unless he survives to the end

Bro you are insane if you think Ilganyag incarnating into the world would have been a good thing for humans. At best she regards a few clever humans as charming pets. She killed thousands and deeply betrayed people supposedly treasured by her just to get a shot at it, and she's also keeping thousands and thousands of baby human souls on tap so I wouldn't put her out of having something to do with the weeping plague either.

I'm no Crescian, we don't need to be exterminating the senet beasts, but we shouldn't be giving them power and authority over humanity. They do not have human best interests at heart. Ilganyag and Ruckmearkha are two sides of the same coin.

>>152024327
I assumed Lemon winning would entail him getting to the Khert and getting to sound the unsounded, and have an anime final boss battle with Ssael if anything like him actually exists there.

isn't one of sonorie's main character traits "im not going to genocide people"?

Honestly Unsounded is too cynically and realistically written for any of these endings to work out. The religious situation on the continent is super fucked: one dominant and aggressive faith with some variations, and one alternative religion in direct opposition to the first which is also highly aggressive.

Even where we had religions coexisting with largely or at least interpretably peaceable sentiments IRL we had centuries of bloodshed and religious conflict. Ssaelism and Gefendurism are directly opposed and highly authorative in their societies. Shit's fucked. Take down the dammakhert and you'll have Plats suicide bombing crowds because you took what made them special away from their kids. Somehow take down the dammakhert and also stabilise the resulting caste situation and you'll have wholesale genocide of the Ssaelit because their enclave and setup in Alderode is the only thing keeping them alive.

The idea of sorting a Crescian into the Gold Caste is weird and might hint at the motives of the Tains who set it up.

The definition of the Gold Caste is the Tains who were there before, unaltered and still very normal, unlike their occupiers would be.
But if the Dammerkhert sorts other normal people into phenotypical Tains.
I wonder if the ultimate goal wasn’t to force the people to all become Tains in the end. Subject to a lack of understanding about genetics.

I'm going full in on the theory that Tree is Murkoph, or rather Murkoph is Tree from sometime in the distant future. We know the Khert doesn't obey conventional laws of time, and adding to that Murkoph's zombification always struck me as a more refined process than what happened to Duane.

>>
>>152026574
I guess we've never seen daytime physically incarnate Murkoph so we don't know if he has the same day and night cycle as Duane. But yeah, for one his flesh still hands together and for two he is constantly 'himself' but it looks like that constant suffering and urge to do harm wasn't avoided, it just got incorporated into the personality which went psycho. That's assuming he wasn't a serial killer to begin with (in the impulsive, rather than for hire, sense).
>>

>>
>>152026574
Khert time is a fickle thing but Ashley has said the Murkoph is older than duane. Plus Sessine said he once warned her about how humans are.
>>
OK let's actually theorise. It seems like Tree has a little bit more khert sensitivity than your average person. He can pick up the two bronze much further than I think a regular bronze would normally be able to sense, more like a plat. If we follow the panel sequencing it looks like he might sense pymary BEFORE he sees the guy creeping round in the mirror.

Now because the mask is lit up on-panel when he senses the bronze I assumed the mask is a pymaric that expands his senses. We see he's willing to use pymarics and anti-wright tools so I think that would make sense for him. But it could be something else: he may have some khert mutation which makes him more sensitivity and also makes him a candidate for zombification. I had to check if all tacit casters are born innate or if some need to be rited, and it seems like the latter because it's mentioned only that in the Adelier family all tacits are also born innate.

So Tree could be an unrited tacit caster or other 'extra port' khert mutant which makes him a candidate for zombification, and ends up the result of a repeat experiment at making Duane. Now if you had to ask me who ends up trying that experiment right now, I wouldn't say it would be Bastion taking another shot I'd say it would be Nora trying to work from the principles she's seeing in Duane.
>cont
>>
>>152026714
Now if we took that as a legit theory, there's also a way more crackpot option I think needs to be discussed. If Nora is open to experimenting to make 'another' Duane, who is the current soud she has access to that is actually the closest living relative of Duane Adelier?

Lemuel is not an innate nor a tacit caster, but it is possible the tacit casting is only a manifestation of some quality that makes someone suitable for zombification. Would Lemuel even know if he had an extra port, if it didn't also come with the tacit+innate casting it usually does? Not everyone born to a tacit lineage is a tacit caster, and it exists in Alderode and without. So if we're talking genetics there are probably partial manifestations as well as the full thing.

I do think there's a loaded gun with Duane here that in his current state there's absolutely no way to tell he's a positive for the weeping plague, so I genuinely don't know how messily his captivity is going to end.
>>
>>152026617
>I guess we've never seen daytime physically incarnate Murkoph so we don't know if he has the same day and night cycle as Duane
I’m really curious about this too. One of the whumptober stories Ashley wrote was about Murkoph and iirc he mentions hiding himself underwater during the day. Might be coherent at night and zombied during the day?
>>
>>152026677
Yeah the discussions about Murkoph in the latter parts of Unsounded really made me feel he was more like some senet bound into human form. If we're talking older he could have been a compatriot of the actual Sael, I suppose. But his body is clearly an Aldish Semon.
>>
>>152026677
>Tree gets zombified during the story (assume he's about 30)
>Spends several decades as a serial killer
>Spends even longer trapped inside the khert, perhaps centuries in perceived time, perhaps intentionally pulled to current year via tittybird
>Loops back around to current year
>Murkoph is now technically much older than Duane despite being zombified later
Time travel mechanics are really hard.
>>
>>152026827
Titty bird can shuffle memories from the future but physical beings seem to be something else. Speaking of time travel in the back of my head I feel it was hinted duane might pull that off because he is a memory.
>>
>>152024588
Counterpoint: the cynicism of the setting will make a happy end all the more meaningful.
There are two ways to look at a setting like Unsounded. The first is materialistically, like GoT, where the political complexities of the Human world mean it's going to be shit forever and nothing that happens in the story actually matters. The alternative is to view it as a religious story, one of apocalypse and salvation. I think the latter is what is being set up, with the ending "healing" the Khert and thus fixing the situation in the material world.
>>
>>152026805
It makes sense with how we know Duane works. And Nora seems especially interested in what happens with Duane at night. So maybe it's like, OK we figured out a way to keep the soul rooted at night rather than wandering off. But that's probably worse because instead of Duane getting to nope out into the khert and chill while his body goes feral, suddenly all these nightmarish smoke eel impulses to rend and devour flesh get channeled through and occupy the actual soul. We saw what it was like for Sette and the Quigleys and Cutter to be in the middle of that in the Unsounded finale, and in this process there would be no way to escape or look away and nobody else who could provide any remedy. Hell we saw how Ana ended up. You'd be getting that every night, forever. Of course you'd end up letting it taking over.

It might even be you can't control your night body even if your soul is alive and waking for it. Plods also get worse at night IIRC. So it might be a case of not just it's impossible to resist forever, it might actually just literally be impossible to resist from the start.
>>
>>152026574
Yeah, and how does that mesh with Ilganyang being so into him? Can't imagine a godlike being caring so much about a literally who knife for hire. It's more likely someone just was edgy enough to name themself after some folktale supernatural murderhobo (maybe his parents were sharts?).
>>
>>152026879
>The first is materialistically, like GoT, where the political complexities of the Human world mean it's going to be shit forever and nothing that happens in the story actually matters.
We fundamentally disagree that a story doesn't matter if it doesn't have a happy ending.
>>
>>152026922
I'm not saying it "doesn't matter if it doesn't have a happy ending", I'm saying that cynical stories with political complexities like GoT tend to not matter because the ending boils down to "and so the ending of the old regime gives birth to the new regime that will be much like the old".
>>
>>152026934
OK I also don't think that makes the story not matter.
>>
>>152026714
>So Tree could be an unrited tacit caster
Can't you just cast by default if you're a tacit caster? So it's impossible for him to not have known that. Unless there's some way to activate that port even in normies
>>
>>152026993
'Innate' is casting by default, so I mentioned that in the post. Unclear answer from Ashley on whether innate always goes hand in hand with tacit:

>>
>>152026934
>>152026960
i feel like the world is cynical but i think cope isn’t- at least not entirely

i don’t think it’s gonna be a traditional ‘happy ending’ and I don’t think it’s gonna be ‘the cycle begins anew’, even tho the complexity of human nature is a big part of the story. we see so many people who want to help, to fix, to heal, i am sure that will be a big and focused part of the ending
>>
>>152025964
Secret Keepers presumably know more about how the Dammakhert works and Ashley has said that there are things worse than stings or the etalarche curse which VITS can pull off.

>>152026714
The lifespan and pymary ability of the Bronze caste can vary greatly, Tree might just be on the side of the spectrum closer to Silvers/Plats.
>>
>>152026879
>>152026934
My guess for what GOT, or more specifically GRRM was going for, was that Westeros' founding myth gets rebooted from one of conquest and war to one of healing. A broken king for a broken kingdom, Bran basically becomes the fisher king.

Now it's not politically realistic or even a view I agree with in how Westeros could be improved but I think that's what the books are leading to (essentially what makes a good king is a smart wise king, not a warrior or overtly cruel king).
>>
>>152027217
My guess is GRRM much like Scott Bakker just didn't actually know how to finish his series once it really picked up speed.
>>
>>152027217
>>152027254
Like I think thinking he has this idea for a transformational mythos of healing is just ignoring the fact ever since he got too caught up in GOT to progress he's been pushing out tons of prehistory novels and series which is just the exact same medieval sex and violence but he doesn't have to worry about fucking up the main series with it. I mean his other major novel project was that edgy superhero thing.

He just likes to write the edgy shit. And I'm not a GOThead or anything but that's actually fine. The moral arc of a fictional world does not have to bend towards justice.

That's what Duane deals with during the day. He's constantly infected with the ghosts, the only thing keeping him from tearing people apart is his soul and mind being present during the day. The ghosts don't come out at night, Duane leaves at night, that's why he goes zombie. Duane has ridiculous willpower.
