The bite test was to distinguish real gold coins from "fools gold" coin. Fool's Gold is pyrite and would be used as fake gold coins. Gold is soft, pyrite is not. Biting a pyrite coin wouldn't leave a mark. So the merchants would bite coins, and if the coin was marked by the bite, it was a real gold coin.Thats where the tradition of athlete's biting their medals comes from, too. Its to symbolize that their gold medal is a real, true gold medal. Symbolizing their victory and achievement. Although gold medals aren't made of pure gold, so the bite test is pointless, and I doubt the athletes today are even aware of why they do it other than because its a tradition.
