>Experience the Pepsi-fueled misadventures of Bleu L. Finnegan, comics’ favorite blue-haired, Buster Keaton-obsessed, Adam Ant-worshipping teenager from the very beginning! Featuring an introduction from Kieron Gillen (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE), learn why this highly influential and critically-acclaimed comedy series has often been compared to the comics work of Rumiko Takahashi and the John Hughes/Molly Ringwald film collaborations of the 1980s.

Here's the first collected volume of Blue Monday, The Kids Are Alright

>has often been compared to the comics work of Rumiko Takahashi

an early example of 'some people' before it spread to wikipedia as a valid.

the only reason her name is even mentioned was just to try to get this sold in the same places Ranma 1/2 was, as all of her stuff was getting published in English anthologies at once.

Its an ok comic, but its way more in touch with Archie and other western stuff than anything remotely japanese.

First time reading and yeah, that's the vibe I'm getting. The redone colour job cannot disguise it as a product of the '00s. Also Jesus, two pages of appearances and the Irish girl has already dropped

>>
>>152042774
I wasn't complaining
I genuinely like the idea of "What if My Life Me had better art and aired on Adult Swim"
>>
>>152043082
Me neither really, some of the dialogue aside (wordswordswords speech bubbles that could have been cut down to a couple of sentences, there are editors listed, did they actually do anything?) it's not terrible. I'm actually quite enjoying the daft boys and girls banter and rivalry from a time before culture wars made shit like that srs bsns.
>>
>>152042379
I'll do them when I have time
They're fairly short storytimes relatively speaking to other books I've done and series' I've marathon
Volume 2 should be tomorrow and I'll be busy on Friday
>>
>>152039583
>this highly influential and critically-acclaimed comedy series
Funny, both of those things imply we'd already know about it
>>
>>152043725
It's talking strictly within the indie/small-publisher comics scene (or well, non-cape comics scene in general post industry crash)
You have zero idea how many critical darlings or cult favorites became even more obscure as the years passed by
>>
>>152043738
I believe that's the point I was trying to make
It's like claiming Snotgirl was hugely influential because it existed
>>
>>152043761
It's more comparable to Battle Chasers being influential but is largely obscure nowadays even to people who read comics (except Battle Chasers influenced stuff outside of comics, it's where Jak & Daxter got its artstyle for example)
>>
>>152043812
>HIGHLY influential
>>
>>152043830
Yeah, within its niche (comics)
Gillen himself in the introduction explains it
>I've never read Archie, but I imagine if I did, I'd say something like "Blue Monday is Archie if Archie was honest about teenagers being fuckmoneys, but still treating it with the John Hughes movie clear enchantment and romance." That sounds credible. Blue Monday, conversely, is incredible. It pops. It fizzes. It is the absolute definitive early-00s oni book which gave birth to a big chunk of ‘00s indie comics culture. Scott Pilgrim was pitched as "Blue Monday meets Dragon Ball Z". Hell, Phonogram was pitched as "Blue Monday meets Hellblazer." It's the missing link. So many people read this, recognized themselves and gave us permission to write about people like us. It is so human and funny and light that I feel terrible putting the awful mantle of "Importance" on its shoulders, but there it is.

Comics like Scott Pilgrim owe themselves to Blue Monday paving the way

>Blue Monday is Archie if Archie was honest about teenagers being fuckmoneys
I tend not to read introductions before I've read something for the first time, lest they colour my judgement, but having just finished the storytime itt that fels pretty on the money. Even the art feels like a cross between Archie and OEL manga styles.

>Kinda surprised it never took off more like Scott Pilgrim did.
I think it's because
A. Scott Pilgrim actually finished its story
B. Scott Pilgrim more or less and unintentionally was a sum of its contemporaries (compare it to what else Oni was releasing at the time like Hopeless Savages and Sharknife) leading to it having more widespread appeal.
C. The movie and game gave it more staying power regardless if the former underperformed

NTA but even in the 80s Adam Ant and a bunch of other New Wave acts were considered fags by a great deal of the public.

I'm sure they did, but if you prance around in long hair and makeup, people are going to think you're a fag.

Not really my point, Anon. I was just surprised if that Anon really hadn't heard of Adam Ant before, not taking issue with the fact he thought he looked like a fag. He definitely isn't though, by all accounts he got mad pussy.

Guy's a legend in the UK. He's basically a blip over here. Unless you're big into guitars or Minneapolis Sound (and there's overlap), you're likely to confuse him with that one Hanna Barbers cartoon.

I found Volume 2 of Blue Monday in a bargain bin three months ago, figured it was completely forgotten when I went digging and found barely anything. Always lucky to see one anon remember, but it’s scary to imagine how many of the series were completely lost in the sands of a pre-2005 internet.

Way worse for webcomics, I was scrubbing the Internet Archive and Keenspot last year and there amount of forgotten manga-inspired webcomics out there is literally in the thousands
>>
>>152054723
>but it’s scary to imagine how many of the series were completely lost in the sands of a pre-2005 internet.
It's actually sort of interesting (at least to me) comparing the reactions to when this got storytimed back in 2013 to today
Blue Monday's in the category of a darling series now niche even among comic readers like many of its contemporaries that aren't Scott Pilgrim but the fact that it got scanned and at least most of it re-released puts it in a better position
The 2000's is this time period for forgotten comics fresh out of the crash with a lot of stuff still not scanned yet.
>Way worse for webcomics, I was scrubbing the Internet Archive and Keenspot last year
The worst thing to happen to online media preservation was people saying "What goes on the internet stays on the internet" which on paper meant well as a warning for kids not to do anything stupid (unfortunately it didn't work)
>>
>>152054859
Apparently, the author is still trying to complete the next volume.
>>
>>152055175
It got a single issue released in 2009 before going on hiatus and then Image started re-releasing the series in color in anticipation for the series' return but only got up to Volume 3
Her own site has a page saying more Blue Monday is on the way but it's been saying that since 2022
>>
>>152055175
>>152055214
this is like a 15-20 year hiatus
is there any reasonable chance she is trying wrap up anything?
>>
>>152055175
Well good luck to them I guess
>>
>>152056259
I mean she's repeatedly shown she hasn't fully abandoned it
In 2024 she released an art print of Bleu
I saw an Anon speculate in one of the older storytime threads say it's taking so long because she got busy with other work as well as raising a kid
>>
>>152056416
>she got busy with other work as well as raising a kid
gee wiz you cant illustrate 24 pages a month AND raise a baby?! fucking women
>>
>>152056483
She had other comics to write and draw and became an editor at DC for a while
Probably paid better as well kind of like why Battle Chasers enters long hiatus' because Joe Mad got busy doing video game magazine covers or vidya itself
>>
I wish /co/ storytimed good comics instead.
>>
>>152057291
Like?
>>
>>152057291
>I wish /co/ storytimed good comics
>no, I'm not going to do it
>someone else should instinctively know what I consider a good comic and sit here for hours doing hundreds of captchas posting it for me
>>
Wouldn't it be cool if all the storytime threads were up at once
>>
>>152057654
No, then there'd be too much clutter on the catalog
Late readers can just read the old threads as they're still archived or just off of Desuarchive
>>
>>152039583
I can barely stomach chapter 1-3's artstyle. Chapter 4 is tolerable to me but it's got a consistency problem with the art style. Like it's drawing from 3 very different artists
>>
Bump 2
>>
Good thread, OP. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one that gave a shit about this series, but there are others out there.
>>
>>152039583
should I expect something like Serenity?
