She was a villain then went through an extended phase where she was effectively still a villain but in conflict with other criminals in underworld fights or higher tier badguys who were a bigger threat while also fighting against the police and heroes, then went through an extended arc where she was part of the suicide squad and mentally sorting her shit out while also still occasionally beefing with heroes, then went through an arc where she was basically a mercenary but trying to do vaguely good stuff before finally getting around to the point in modern years where she is just an actual hero.No one flipped a switch and said "oh she's good now". She had an extremely natural, slow progression from villain to hero.

You'll notice, even compared to a lot of other modern versions, it's not even really Harley Quinn she's playing.Like, Harley's kinda airheaded, kinda crazy, but she's a harlequin. A type of clown who specifically plays up their foolishness while hiding their real intelligence. Kaley's is just kinda sporadic with none of the nuances. Even Margot Robbie's had this feeling that she more than embraced being seen as an idiot to gain the upperhand and proved cunning even in her loopier moments.
