I think it's one of the greatest comics.

It's a mixed bag. A handful of very good comics with a lot of mediocre ones.

I enjoyed it when I last reread it seven years ago, though I was a lot more impressionable back then.
I should reread it.

There were stories/issues/characters I enjoyed but something about Neil's writing that always felt "off" to me.

Now that we know who he really is, the the thing that felt off was that he was always a pretentious fuckboi who was using comics as a launchpad for being a "serious writer"

Sam Kieth also deserves more credit for creating the DNA of the comic

Moore's Swamp Thing and Grant's Animal Man are better, more subversive, deeper and pack more heart

a very mediocre comic, which is only praised by people who think that the best possible comic is a lesser kind of illustrated novel. half of the page is text boxes filled with YA prose, and the rest is ghastly art from a random (and constantly changing) vertigo hack. Its a comic for those who have no appreciation for panelling, linework, colour, sequencing (the language of comic books), and can only imagine comics that aspire to be bad novels.

An overrated series with shitty artwork.

I don't remember that. Examples?

It peaks at Season of Mists, and, while I do like a lot of the art, it is sometimes ruined by being far wordier than it needs to be.

When I was in highschool there was an older junkie dude called Grimace who worked at 7-11, he gave the first few issues of Sandman. One of the only people who was nice to me in those days. Sandman is a good memory for me

might be the greatest comic series ever written.
Lucifer, a spinoff of sandman, is amazing as well.

better writers help make better comics! who knew?
