Any advice for getting backissues online or at least getting a good sense at the price of them? I got a good handful of trades but I want to have at least one series in floppy form. My LCS doesn't have much and I'd want to know I wasn't getting too scammed. It's not just looking through ebay/your local comic stores and praying, is it?

According to Reddit the floppy market is collapsing.
From my personal experience, Zoomers ONLY want manga, so it seems plausible.
This probably means that 'rare editions' will become much cheaper (relative to inflation) as some uncs are forced to sell "below value". Paradoxically, over time, this will cause a supply crunch as selling and re-selling (particularly floppies and new releases) on ebay, craigslist etc. will become less profitable for private seller/collectors and 'found a box in the attic' normies. This means that corpo resellers will gobble up marketshare and accumulate inventory (here in the EU it's cunts like momox/medimops) and establish a gamestop-style market where both the seller and the buyer get raped and the middleman takes everything. This will also kill whatever's left of "purist" comic book stores that haven't pivoted their business towards manga as their cost per item is ~40% of sale price whereas corpo resellers have averages of <15%.

tldr. depending on what specifically you're looking for, now is probably the time to get some good deals if you buy from a private seller through ebay, craigslist, yard sales - however, there's probably a fair share if completely delusional "I know what I got" boomers, so yes, you'll just have to manually compare prices.
Sorry for the ramble I didn't really answer your question, but good luck.

I appreciate the insight either way, anon. I've got some nephews into manga and that's been an easy stocking item along with any extra tpbs I manage to have lying around. Most of them don't make the full plunge into comics but at least two of them did.
I'm lucky that most of my favorite series are in easy to get epic collections or I jumped on at the right time to get them, but for whatever reason I want to collect all the Absolute Batman floppies. Most aren't too bad but the price on #1 is understandably pretty high. Chance I'll be going to a wedding in New York in a couple months, so I could take a look through Midtown or Forbidden Planet if I don't figure it out.

NTA but it's been a losing struggle for me, keeping everything in roughly the same size. I figured buying my trades in softcover rather than HC would mean they can neatly stick together on a shelf. Marvel has announced a bunch of new omnibuses for this year and there is not a SINGLE one I want. Which I suppose is good. I need to save some money. It's just that outside a couple epics there is almost ZERO things I want this year from marvel. DC sort of still got me and I'll be getting Savage Sword as they come but it's shaping up to be a very cost effective year
>>
>>152068782
All I wanted were more X-Men reprints and yet they couldn't even organize a Krakoa book in reading order. Whatever Jim Lee is doing over there in DC, he's definitely got a good head on his shoulders. Marvel still does good work but it pains me to see many a good run cut short or not expanded upon.

IST released a list of their top 50 sellers last year. Two things to note.
1. The list had a MASSIVE DC advantage with something like 37 or so books being DC.
2. Warlord made top 25 despite release in LATE December. Which I think is rad as fuck.
>>
>>152068887
Relax, anon. I'm just stating how far they've fallen on books. By good work I meant there are still some series worth reading, but the editorial doesn't give anything the time to shine. The only Marvel I cared to keep up with last year was some Ultimate and a few one--shots, was too busy riding the DC wave. I don't play favorites with companies but until Marvel fixes their issues, I'm happy picking up some DC Finest that catch my fancy.

I've ordered new books from amazon many times and never once received one that could actually be considered new, unless they were manga in shrink-wrap which is a 1/3 chance or so.
I only do it because I already have the prime (their shipping is fine for other prosucts) so if I only want 1 or 2 books it's still the best option in terms of cost since making the trip to the book store is also only worth it for a big haul.

The recession doesn't help matters either. /shelf/ is a lovely thread though, it stays relatively calm and has motivated people to jump on an omnibus or the like for years.
If things get better, we might get a bit of a boost next year. More people are getting into comics recently

If you haven't noticed yet, western comics, especially cape, are dying both in terms of content and publishing. Fewer collectors, less discussion.

Personally, I don't have a western bias and manga is in a golden age so my shelves are growing more than ever, but /a/ doesn't really have enjoyable discussion, it's shizoprenic obsession all the way down for all the popular series and the indie stuff doesn't get threads. Then again, I can't imagine being a Marvel or DC enjoyer in current year, I guess you'd just start collecting more and more obscure stuff from the 80s/70s/60s and wipe your tears with worhtless floppies.

But at the end of the day /shelf/ is still one of the best (semi-) generals on the site and very enjoyable despite its slowness. When 4chan was kill for like two weeks last (?) year I was bouncing around between alt-chans and reddit and it was the worst online experience of my life, I never want to go back. I'm very thankful for /co/ despite its flaws.

Maybe for anime? I wouldn't know.
For manga discussion OPT can be great, but that's a different vibe than shelf altogether. The WSJ general is just people arguing over sales numbers. All the big weekly series like OP have a healthy roster of posters who are genuinely mentally ill, sprinkled in with coomers, making any worthwhile discussion utterly impossible. Occasionally there are series that don't have anime adaptatuons but can sustain threads like, say, ChoujinX and those are enjoyable, but they're few and far between.

Am I really being too harsh?

Sounds like you're just a general loving cuck. They're not that common but there good manga discussions pop up more often on /a/ than good comic book discussions are here. /shelf/ is devoid of actual discussion and there was a period in time several years back when there was a /shelf/ thread up almost 24/7 that the threads were filled with the exact same posts every time, like automated bot replies. Manga storytime get good discussion too, more than they do here where it's mostly just image dumping for lazy tards that either never reply or just post "bumping to say thanks". Then again if you actually went into a WSJ thread maybe your taste is the problem. I'm sure the popular action shonen threads attract the same kind of schizo weirdos capeshit ones do here, but it's probably still not as bad as /co/.
>>
>>152072862
Even with shonen you get good one off threads. Some of the best threads I've been in were about battle shonen series on /a/.
>>
>>152072706
Thankfully /co/ doesn't have any coomers so discussion is always clean and sfw unlike /a/
>>
>>152072862
NTA. If a comic discussion breaks out there's always some retard who comes in and complains. If there's no discussion, someone complains. If shelves get posted someone complains. If they don't- you get the idea.
>>
>>152072961
That's the worst part about /co/. For years, I've had to filter out nearly every other thread because it was filled with people like that. The drawfag threads are filled to the gills with them. It wasn't this bad in 2012.
>>152072971
That's why I try to post my shelves or a haul and keep on top of the replies. Nothing too artificial though, I won't repost the same shelf if I don't have something new to add. Be the change you want to see and it becomes easier to ignore the bad eggs or trolls
