I heard the general idea was that Quasi and Frollo represented two sides of a madonna whore complex. Quasi idolized her, Frollo demonized her, Phoebus saw her in totality. Then the obvious dichotomy where Quasi was able to make peace with not getting what he wanted while Frollo clung to his ego in every way possibleI think there's just a bad taste in the mouth that this is the movie Disney picked for accepting you won't get the girl. It feels like there was a fear that girls wouldn't like Esmerelda if she got with Quasi and they had toys to sell.Hunchback, Lion King and Notre Dame all feel like Disney's experiment to see if they can shed the reputation of "the ones who make all the princess movies" that they got over the course of the Renaissance but it always feels like they came short of being able to do so back then with the girls in the movies working as "backdoors" to still sell dolls.
