Has Tony had a single good comic arc?

Armor Wars

Yes.
>>
Yeah.
>>
No

Iron man in the 80s was the first and also the last time iron man was any good

One of the two default story arcs people cite came out in the tail end of the 70s.
>>
Fraction run wasn't bad, it just got derailed by the Civil War and registration act stuff.

>Kaminski's run is generally good, even if a few individual stories fell flat. He seemed very interested in the SE staff and how the company works, as well as tying up a few loose ends from previous writers with one notable exception. Plus the process of physical recovery felt like he actually solved the problem with both his brain and hard work. Immediately bails when he sees what the upcoming plans are.
>The Crossing is stupid nonsense that has maybe three interesting ideas involved, but the main plot was a terrible mistake for everything involved, and has some blatant issues with where people are supposed to be (was Black Widow being in two places at once supposed to even out with how she straight up disappears in OGS after a while?)
>Somehow "Teen Tony" manages to do weird screwups in such a short time like Meredith being a college professor with a different ex-husband when she just became a ninja a few years ago or claim Abraham Zimmer was the security head despite being an old science man (Beth was even in last issue, so no idea how that happened). Also really a ugly-looking armor that drifts into a Model 4 look alike. I have absolutely no idea how anyone involved thought this was a good idea.
>Heroes Reborn goes to extreme lengths with the idea of "starts out selfish, becomes a better person", but doesn't actually show the process, just has Doc Samson say he improved at the end. Feels like a rough draft of a story. Also a weird rapid progression with Madame Hydra->Mandarin (robot)->Doctor Doom. Whirlwind feels like he is just there because he was an enemy in the first season of the cartoon. Armor is interesting, like it really is an independently-reached idea for how Iron Man works with metal muscle structure, but the face and color scheme are similar. Don't know how to feel about it.
>Iron Man is good again instantly when Busiek takes over. Even manages to make the "horde of bad guys you've never seen before" thing work to an okay standard.

Yes but you can count the number on one hand without using all your fingers.
>>

This recommended list feels terrible. So much of what is important to understand Tony Stark, Iron Man, and the world he lives in is omitted.
>>
>>152069431
Here’s a better question: is Tony a good character? (No)
>>
>>152069431
Secret identity and disability drama Iron Man > post-Civil War/Extremis Iron Man
>>
>>152069431
Tony is a unique case of having an absolutely shit rogue's gallery and very few worthwhile solo runs yet he's still treated like an A lister because of all the avengers and universe events he's center stage in
>>

The dynamic between Tony and Iron Man is genuinely interesting even if modern renditions drop it
The world admires Iron Man but either envies or fears Tony Stark but has no idea that the man behind the millions of dollars and suit of armor is actually highly neurotic and disabled because of his heart condition.
Tony has to put on a sense of bravado both as a celebrity and a superhero to cover up his very personal and very human problems that would risk ruining him if the public were to find out.

Tony has a good rogues gallery
Fin Fang Foom, Living Laser, the Hammer family, Mandarin, etc
It's just that he power crept them, they've gone through too many legacies, are considered too problematic, and writers on his runs refuse to use them
Williamson actually saying he's gonna fucking USE his villains was seen as a selling point to fans
>>
>>152069676
They were probably omitted for being unreadable dogshit.
>>
>>152069431
Remember that time when he sealed-off She-Hulk from her powers? Good times.

>Iron Man is good again instantly when Busiek takes over.
To be honest, that's a mid Iron Man run at best that got over-praised because star writer who could do no wrong in the eyes of fans, and because it was the first "normal" Iron Man run in several years. In fairness I guess most runs since have been mid at best too.

That run has two mystery box villains that were impossible for readers to solve because one ended up being an OC and the other had been dead almost 20 years, it has the weird plot about Pepper cheating on Happy, and a writer who drew attention to how one of the big problems with the Mandarin was how each new writer seemed to have a completely new take on him, and then did the exact same thing himself.

>>152069716
I really don't know why /co/ perpetuates the meme that Iron Man has no good villains when there are other Marvel heroes who have much smaller rogues galleries and are just coasting on one or two big memorable villains.

>doesn’t give issue numbers for any stories except the very first
>>

His armor wasn't fully cool until Adi Granov.

The third writer in a row to do that. True Mandarin has never been tried.
